Last year at an anime convention, me and some friends got some mochi ice cream. I'm slowly eating mine, trying to not get it on my cosplay AND cause I got sensitive teeth.... and one of my friends decides to just... hork it down. She ended up crying because it was so cold. I laughed. I enjoy my friends pain. It brought me joy.

I made mochi from scratch with a steamer once. It turned out pretty good. I'd still like to try and make it the really old fashioned way, and make it from steamed sweet-rice, rather than the mochiko. Of course, I plan on doing that with a stand mixer. If you wanna go really really old fashioned, you've got to break out your wooden bowls and mallets.

As a note from a Japanese housewife: powdered sugar instead of granulated gives a smoother mochi. Although, to be honest, you don't really need to use sugar at all as the sweetness of the ice cream should be enough. Although I'm used to handling the mochi while it's still warm and just wrapping it around the ice cream quickly, using that much plastic wrap makes me cringe. The environment will thank you if you use less.

Something I love about this channel is that a lot of the recipes are actually doable at home, if you have the time, energy and access to ingredients. So some people are actually likely to reproduce it and use the same techniques that you showed. I don't think a recipe that wraps every item individually in plastic wrap sets a good example.
