excellent video, the pickup height was an important point that often goes unmentioned.

I picked up a p bass copy (bridgecraft) for $25 last week. Needs almost everything. Neck is good..but the rest is crap-0-la. It's gonna be fun. Great vid.

Did you end up getting that bass lined out?

You make a very interesting point about how adjusting the height of the split coils ie setting them at the recommended manufacturers height (you did, didn't you!) makes a noticeable difference to your tone. Even with pickups in electric guitars and especially with the higher outputs of Dimarzio/Seymour Duncan et al.
@diyguitarmods6146

Didn't look at the manufacturers recommended heights, just adjusted to what I thought sounded good.

@@diyguitarmods6146 just came across your video a year later. I'm actually building an 80's style skateboard right now. Got some neon pink and yellow grip tape and my wife drew out a design 👍. Oh yeah your video is the video that helped me adjust the pick ups on my bass which is the exact same one as this. I added white pick up covers and put the white pick guard from my Mexican P bass and bingo it looks like a new bass 👍

Not a fan of "relic" finishes. Glad to see you go the other direction. That new pick guard gives it class.

Can I ask what model number bass extender did you fit to this bass.

Lindy fralin for fender pickups. You’ll lose a lot of faith in fender circa 2020 but you’ll have one mean sounding bass guitar.

I'm in the process of moding my PJ bass much the same as yours. What did you use to reshape the pickguard the factory Fender is not a direct fit. Mine is not fitting around the pickups.

My question is why not change all the tuners instead of having 1 high quality tuner and 3 low quality one's may as well change them all at once jmo

Isn't the push \ pull volume knob the active \ passive switch?
@diyguitarmods6146
@diyguitarmods6146 3 года назад
No, there's no active circuitry in this bass, either stock or since my mods. I installed the push/pull for the series/parallel mod on the P pickup.

I can’t find any pearl picksguard for a pj bass so do I have to drill an extra hole in a p bass pickguard or something?
@diyguitarmods6146
@diyguitarmods6146 3 года назад
You only need a normal P Bass one because the J pickup is away from the pickguard.
@matthewgilkison7615
@matthewgilkison7615 3 года назад
@@diyguitarmods6146 A pj bass has 3 tone knobs while a precision bass has 2 so I had to drill an extra hole. I did it and it worked haha.
@diyguitarmods6146
@diyguitarmods6146 3 года назад
@@matthewgilkison7615 Yeah but it depends where the jack is. A standard P Bass has the jack plug mounted on the pickguard. so the pickguard has 3 holes. So because this bass has a side mounted jack I had enough holes for the 3 controls without needing to drill any. But if you had 3 controls as well as a pickguard mounted input jack yes you would need to drill a hole.

Fender uses 5 hole bridges most other 5 hole bridges will fit no drilling required

What did you do about the fret buzz ? I got the same issue.
@diyguitarmods6146
@diyguitarmods6146 4 года назад
Hey, so there's 2 things - one is that if you're getting a lot of buzz in the higher frets there may be too much neck relief. So you'd tighten the truss rod a little which flattens out the neck. This will also lower the action, meaning you can raise the saddles to clear those last few frets. But the other thing is using a fret rocker or other short straight edge to find any frets that are higher than they should be and filing them down, making sure you don't go below the other frets. I just use a shaped crowning tool I got from Stew Mac so I'm lowering them slightly and crowning them at the same time. - Cam.

@krazybassman1 4 года назад
@@diyguitarmods6146 Thanks for the response, and advice, I recently adjusted the truss, and am ordering a fret rocker. I dig the bass, I got the same model, and color. have you had any though about upgrading, pickups ?

Why would you want to change the pickups? They're Duncan designed on the vintage modified .
@diyguitarmods6146
@diyguitarmods6146 3 года назад
I did not know this. It doesn't say that anywhere, including on the pickups. I figured they were the same as Classic Vibes, which I believe are made by the same people as Toneriders. Either way they sound great, not changing them now.
@viniciuscomacento
@viniciuscomacento 3 года назад
@@diyguitarmods6146 they aren't duncan designed anymore, in these more recent ones they're "Fender Designed" officially speaking but, to be completely honest, I have a Duncan Designed pickup in my pbass and they sound very close or identical to yours, the "Fender Designed" in general. I'd say they really kept the same specs and just have changed the label for some contractual reason.

There are Toneriders in Strats and Tele CV's. Good PU's. Not sure what's in my Squier 70's Vintage Jag Bass, but they sound great! Promo says Fender design, but most likely made by Duncan/Tonerider...
