Not sure why you'd want to roadtrip in an EV, that has to be the biggest pain in the ass in the world. 14 stops at 30 minutes each to do 1400 miles? A honda civic could do it in 3 stops at 3 minutes each. These arent long distance commuters, these are inner city daily drivers.
@@JeffEdmondson The free newspaper/grocery ads (- the glossy pages) you get in the mail every few weeks make excellent window towels. Streak free and helping the environment by recycling.
This is crazy I know but I love you and this channel! I’m in love with this car I watch every single minute of your hour long videos! Please keep it up and make more !
Hey Kyle. We made that same run. Leaving from Charlotte. Took the southern route thru Auburn, Ala, down thru MS and LA and into TX. It was pretty cool and straight forward drive. 2941 miles roundtrip. We saw you there during the Electrified Garage panel. Awesome trip!!
I'm with the other people I love your road trip videos, great to see real practical road tripping. You show all the pertinent information necessary to help people out but you still make it fun to watch.
Clean the suction cup smudge off the bottom part of the windshield. How many vids have I seen this? IT’S KILLING ME!! 😂. Yes, I’m feeding the YT algorithm by making this comment which is probably Kyle’s plan. 😂. Love the road trip vids!!
Awesome trip! Great seeing Don with you. Very entertaining! Lots of good food too, I bet poundage was added and range decreased! LoL Who else would know how to fix a supercharger by whacking the handle against the curb!
Don Miller it happens to the best of us especially when all that good food across the country is passing us by. Gotta stop and enjoy! I have a hankering to drive to Goodson’s!
You won't be disappointed. I 1st went to Goodson's in the mid 70s when I was a kid and it was just a shack. We moved away, and then some of my family returned in the early 80s, and I pretty much ate at Goodson's every year since then when I visited. The veggie's are so-so, I get the side salad and fries or mash potatoes or mac & cheese. Banana Pudding *if* you have room is yummy. I always get the large steak (it's the size of the platter), and as they say at Goodson's if it was any bigger it would be illegal!
Great road trip video. You are obviously a road trip/supercharging guru. If you could just slow down when you’re flipping through the electric consumption screens, that would be great. Love the music, info graphics, and most of all, the positive attitude. Makes me want to hit the road in my 3. May I suggest a northern route? Maybe up through New England....
It would be nice if there was an edit mode for the superchargers so you can tap on each one you want to stop at in case you want to take a different route.
I like this style of traveling. Reminds me of long range helicopter travel. Changing routes for air conditions, weather, and fuel locations makes the journey less monotonous. I just did MA to CO cannonball style except for a short nap in the roof top tent 18 hours in. Still in a gas truck for now till cybertruck
You and Don after Goodson's in the car is like me and Michelle after shopping lunch LOL. Awesome! I was already planning to sneak into your car and get rid of the ring...thank you Alyssa for handling it!
I'm surprised they were able to walk out after eating that large steak. But they were definitely and absolutely under the Influence when they got in the car.
Holy Smokes, you are comfortable with a reserve amount (i.e., LOW reserve) that I have yet to be comfortable with. I've had my Model S for 5 years now, and here YOU are reliably getting to destinations with a very low reserve. You must give a seminar.
currently on a RT (back) from Raliegh / wake forest to Austin in my 2020 LR m3. ABRP app routed me through nashville, memphis, little rock, and Dallas. learned a lot on this trip so far. a few "highlights": 1. finding a good hotel was already difficult enough before throwing in EV charging requirements (and also during covid). I may try sleeping in the car next time... though the back seat not laying flat w/ the trunk surface doesn't seem that it would be very comfortable. 2. driving more than 8 hours in a day sucks. if you can find a destination where you can fully charge your EV overnight, it cuts a good hour+ off each day. 3. bugs will stain Tesla's paint (especially noticeable with white). spray the front of your car with a protective coating first. 4. driving at high speeds (~90... common on those middle of nowhere roads) will dramatically reduce your estimated range. so that 315 range is more like 250. 5. if you are unable to charge at the place you are staying at overnight, arrive w/ at least 15%, and disable sentry & overheat protection. also, suggested to arrive at superchargers with > 10%. so now range is like 220 (max) in between stops. thats a lot of stops on a 1400 mile trip (and thats if you charge to 100% each time). basically you'll want to stop & charge every ~150 miles instead. 6. verify with valet that they know how to open / close the door, and lock / unlock the vehicle! conclusion: next road trip wont be till i have an EV w/ a 500 mi+ range, and a battery architecture that can charge faster.
Wow I didn't know you knew Don & Maryann! One of my favorite RU-vidrs!!! I'm a new sub and when I found out your home was in Raleigh I was saying" wow so many great RU-vidrs there, what a great Tesla community! " That means you probably know Brian and Karen from i1Tesla also. Great video, happy travels!
Another great road trip video. I finally took delivery of my model 3 on Feb 13th, think my first road trip will be in May from Austin to Indiana for my niece's graduation. I hope you had a great time in Austin, I wasn't able to make it to the event.
We did that trip in the other direction with our Model S when we moved from Austin to Myrtle Beach. Plenty of superchargers, no problem. A 2 day ICE trip takes 3.5 days in an EV though.
yea this dude is literally charging every hour to 2 hours of driving. compared to an ice that is a horrible joke. i think once these toys can hit 500 miles then they can become OK for mainstream use
wow nice road trip!!! My model 3 SR+ is on order, can't wait to go on my own road trip! But I'm in Shanghai China.... who knows when I'll get mine delivered.....
Fully Charged Live was a great time. I hit many of the same chargers as you guys but I went through Memphis and Dallas on the way to Austin and through Houston, New Orleans and Atlanta on the way home (Northern VA).
Another awesome road trip videos. I really, really like watching them. So your rule is basically to arrive at your next intended supercharger with somewhere between 5-10% and rip it when you can? Also, bonus points for Lido Shuffle...
Great trip and documentation! I have a P3D and a P100DX. Interesting the P3D isn't any more efficient the the X. I get better range in the X because of the bigger battery. The 20" wheels really kill the 3. Similar to ICE, hauling loads or driving hard hurts the range of a lesser powered vehicle more than a heavier powered car. "Influence of the mass"! I'm converting my 3's wheels as soon as the tires are worn out.
Yep, Kyle's looked at a few of my screenshots and commented that his P3D wasn't as efficient as Ruby on several occasions. Not apples and applies given our difference in driving style LOL but around Raleigh on the same day same temp it's pretty close in town.
The chicken fried steak is amazingly good. Note that the large size is big as a catcher's mitt. It's not good to plan anything afterwards. But some folks are young and foolish.
You passed right through Brenham, TX (where we live). Too bad there's no Supercharger here. We're working on that. My wife takes delivery of her new Tesla next week.
4hrs 9min charging. Your way was definitely faster than theirs by about 2hrs. I live in Houston and it is the 4th largest well on its way to 3rd if trends continue. When you said chicken fried steak I thought of two places and Gooden's being in Tomball I knew there was no supercharging up that way save for maybe a destination charger. Hope you had a good time in Austin.
I drive by the Steak 'n Shake charger, and the other one, from time to time just stalking to see the Teslas haha. I wish I had done it when you were there would be awesome to meet you. Love the videos!
You can follow our Instagram story for real time trip updates to say hi at chargers. Depending on the location, quite a few people do come up and say hey
Hi there Kyle! Great video!! Question, do you think its possible to charge a MBP via the usb plugs? I would obviously get a usb-A to C cable. I haven't seen anyone doing this in the model 3. Seriously considering the LR AWD version.
You have no idea how bad in every video my OCD wants to clean that suction cup smudge off your windshield, lol. I looked up ABRP and it too wanted to go up to Charlotte. At least in ABRP you can select 'next charger' and it flips to the southern route. BTW time/distance were about the same either way. 11:12 is that a car pulling a car pulling a car? i didn't think that was legal. I see it at 33:27 too but at least that one involves a dolly.
Joe, Kyle explained to me that those 3 car convoys, are small car dealer bring back cars from auction. They drive the largest car and hook the other two cars to it. This was the 1st time I've seen that (not that I get out of NC much).
Out of spec I hope you don't take this rude but what do you do for a living besides youtube? I know thats pretty personal but my girlfriend and I were talking about it and we think its awesome you get to travel so much. Especially to be able to count down states you been too! If you could let us know id love that. Huge fan
Love these road trip videos, Kyle! I saw that your Model 3 was at over 24,000 miles in the middle of this video, so I'm curious, how many miles do you drive in a year? It's gotta be pretty high!
@@OutofSpecMotoring Wow, that's very impressive! I'm sure the semi-autonomous driving features, when they're available in the cars, help make those miles easier, but that's still a lot of driving!
I'm not yet an EV owner. hope to be, soon... For what it's worth, I just made the trip from Atlanta to visit my daughter in Chapel Hill this weekend. GoogleMaps took me thru Charlotte to Greensboro, and then to I-40. I got to visit Raleigh for the first time. I wanted to see the new train station. Very nice... Hope to see you at a supercharger someday.
Thanks for sharing! Really enjoyed this video! How fast were you driving? Noticed the over 300wh/mi, wondering if that’s normal for Model 3 performance
Question on charging strategy? Why don't you charge enough to arrive at 11% (or whatever the threshold is to get the higher charge rate)? Seems like that would make the stops shorter - trying to learn, so not saying you're wrong, just want to understand. Thanks
The car is still charging at over 110kW until 11% so it’s still quicker to leave when pulling 80kW or less (or whatever the number is) and pull in dead - if you’re pulling good speeds you never leave early... just leave after it’s tapered below 110kW or so, depending on the situation
Is that a smart car too i had an orange smart car with orange interior for 3 years put 50k miles on it per year went to maine with it Ohio south Padre island and myrtle beach/OBX too i doordashed with the smart car too it was a great buy with 68k miles on it got it for $4500 it topped out at 88-90mph
Goodson's Cafe definitely the best chicken fried steak. Just moved to Houston last summer. I hope you did not get the large! It's bigger than a catcher's mitt. I got very anxious for you going down below 7% on arrival. Scary. By the way my Tesla is right now in the Houston Tesla shop you visited. Rats and rodents chewed out the wires in the front. I found out that that's not uncommon. Tesla uses very tasty wire. $2,200 to repair!
14:05 Were the business cards on all the stations or just the one with the o-ring in it? If it was all, that's a bit much, but if it was the "broken" one, maybe they were just saying "Hey, I can fix this, call me." Until you fix it with a couple taps, LOL. Cheers, love the road trip videos, nice way to chill at the end of the day and see new places.
I am really interested in the concept of the EV, and I do enjoy the videos. For me they are simply not practical as of yet, but I will keep watching and hoping that changes soon.
Just the exterior - Alyssa wiped it off on our next road trip to Miami. It’s always been my plan to keep it as it drives more comments for video engagement to keep the RU-vid algorithms happy. 🤣
I enjoy your videos, and have a question. Do you leave the dash cam on the entire time? You must collect an enormous amount of footage to edit with. Do you have a box full of flash cards to hold it all?
I just click on the GoPro periodically when I see something interesting for about 10 seconds and then shut it off. Usually 64gigs will get me around 3,000 miles of footage (only turning on a few times for each leg) in 4K
You really should start including your off and on ramp times to chargers including the time it takes to switch to a working charger. Your charging times seem to be misleading unintentionally. I would consider from time the turn single goes on to exit the highway till the turn single goes off merging back on the full charging time.
I tried to do turn signal to turn signal, but I kept missing either the exit or the return. Forsure Kyle pays close attention to the distance off the highway to a supercharger when he deciding which is the next charger to stop at. He just charge a bit more so he could skip the less convenient chargers.
Road tripping new Teslas every week, I want to know how. Besides the RU-vid money, is this a business hauling vehicles, or just a ton of events and friends to visit is my question?
So 2 observations that could really hurt Tesla; 1. California has bought more Tesla's than the rest of the US. Southern California has a huge problem with charging stations. There simply are not enough of them. There have been report of 3 hr lines to charge your car that is not sustainable. 2. It is to low they are bottoming out a lot, like the old 72 Corvettes.
The business one that you sold you said was all scratched up on the bottom. I would love to see you go from San Diego to Seattle on one of your road trips
