@@Pete856 - I did miss that. I don't want to hear from any more automotive journalists about how awful the fuel economy is, or how short the electric range is... Not when they all drive like speed demons and idiots. Example... Shmee saying his Ford GT gets 100 miles to a tank... then drives 100 miles fairly normally in Death Valley... still has over half a tank of fuel. Yeah... because you didn't drive like a fool.

I used to think highway milage was always lower. There was once that I drove over 90 mph the whole session on highway and when I refueled, I figured that the mpg was even higher than local. I was sure the gas station was ripping me off. Later on I realized that speed over 75 might increase the mpg a lot.
@Pete856
@Pete856 5 лет назад
@@yalizhu6583 Cars are most efficient when they can cruise without stopping at a slow speed (maybe 50 mph), once you start going faster than this, you'll get worse mpg. Electric cars are the same, plus they also don't mind stop and go conditions which would usually hurt your mpg.

In my Prius I can go safely get 380 miles at 85mph.. and still have 2 gallon reserved.. I generally get 38-40 at that speed.. I average 48-50mpg in mixed driving.. Definitely a fantastic road trip car. For a single person its easy to drop all the seats flat, put blinds in the windows and sleep in the car. Full size air mattress will easily fit. Better than a hotel room. No risk of bed bugs... Lolz. And way cheaper Just set the HVAC to whatever temp you want.. crank the fan on high and stay comfy all night.. she burns about 3 gallons of fuel over 12 hrs idle time.

20:50: Please to not infer that it is OK to leave your M3 occupying a supercharging spot all night. Between ICEing at hotels, non-functional SC's and now Tesla owners blocking SC spots, it is making it more difficult for those of us passing through at night to continue without undo delays.

I prefer the Superchargers at the hotels. When I first wake up, I charge the car and go back to the room to get ready. Then the car is ready when I am. With destination charging, it’s possible someone else will need to use that charger as well. So then to be courteous, you get up in the middle of the night to unplug so others can use it. Or at a bare minimum, leave a sign on your car for the person to call if someone else needs it or leave your number at the front desk.
@TheRealMK67
@TheRealMK67 4 года назад
I'm with you on being courteous but leaving your info with someone else or getting up in the middle of the night, etc, there's got to be a better way. Elon needs to create a Tesla to Telsa notify function (maybe within the app) --- something that protects the privacy of the individual yet allows the cars (owners) to communicate.

7:00 - no, actually, his BMS was not confused, this is how Teslas work. His BMS was actually pretty spot on, probably a newer 100D. I made a video on the topic: ?v = TF3aOxTcDms Basically what happens is, there is a buffer that Tesla conveniently switches to below the 0% point once you start driving. But also easily conveniently pulls up above the 0% point, when they display your remaining range based on the typical consumption constant. So what this means is that Tesla is presenting a rated range number that they base on 100% kWh capacity - full capacity of the pack at the point divided by typical consumption of 245Wh/m on an AWD or P. But once you start driving, they only take the usable, which to them is full pack MINUS buffer and now you end up having only 96% rated at 245Wh/m, but the screen still says 100%. So this is why he was able to drive for 5 miles. Actually, if the BMS is good he had about 10-15 more miles below 0% at rated consumption until he got the actual 0 point.(the buffer is 4kWh on 100D) Pretty sneaky stuff.

Thanks for this video. I am now convinced that Teslas are not up to the type of road trip I do, which disappoints me. I know that Tesla is much closer to my needs than any other brand I have seen, but they are a long way away from what I want. Way too many stops. Stops a lot longer than I want to do. Flakey chargers and other issues that I don't want to put up with. I hope that EVs can somehow get to the point where they meet the range and refill times that I am used to with ICE. 400+ miles on a full charge minimum, and approximately 15 minutes at the charger, but never more than 30.

@@OutofSpecMotoring I have. The problem is that we make a few ~1000 mile trips (one way) each year. We make that in ~14 hours pretty consistently, including 2 fuel stops. I did one of the runs with a friend & his Model S Long Range. It ended up taking 22 hours driving time, I figure the 3 with a 310 mile range will be pretty similar. That's just too long. We ended up needing to stop to sleep instead of just spelling each other, so that added another 6 hours each direction. That ate up our entire profit from our trip in opportunity loss. It's just not economically feasible yet.

@@jordanamoth6724 I know what driving a Tesla on a road trip is right now. It added 6 hours to my trip. Nice car, but my trips are not for the journey. They are about getting there, doing my business whilst there and then returning. Flying and renting a car makes the trip unprofitable. Adding the extra hours, thus requiring 2 extra days on the trip makes it unprofitable. There is nothing that making the trip longer than necessary buys me. A diesel car with 750 miles range would give me extra profitability, but I don't like the particulate emissions, and now my reservations with diesel are being justified by all the diesel manufacturers who have cheated the test. Electric needs to give us the range we need to do our work. Just saying that I don't really need it is arrogant. Once again, I have no desire to make the trip more enjoyable. Great video - I noticed you said you had the front windshield tinted, does that make a big difference in the model 3 and what percentage of tint is on it?
@OutofSpecMotoring
@OutofSpecMotoring 5 лет назад
It’s an 80% ceramic tint and yes, a huge difference especially in the hot + sunny climate we live in!

How do you not get speeding tickets?????
@takanara7

Lol, should look up the speeding tickets in various states if you're going cross country. In kansas they'll throw you in jail for going over 95, for example.

When I set the EV cannonball record a few months ago I had a binder with all the speeding limitations. The trouble was we had to go faster than them to break the record!

Do you not have FSD for navigate on autopilot?
@OutofSpecMotoring
@OutofSpecMotoring 5 лет назад
Nope, I had EAP on the last two Teslas but I don’t think it was worth spending $6k for lane changes (the only useful feature currently for me in FSD). I’m already used to just changing lanes and putting back on autopilot. Since I do not tend to keep cars long it even made more sense for me not to get it. However, if Tesla let me transfer FSD to my next car then I would go for it.
@manasgupta8908
@manasgupta8908 5 лет назад
@@OutofSpecMotoring But it does get better over time with the promise of FSD after the gov approval. it will be worth over 10k elon said if you buy it when FSD it out.
@OutofSpecMotoring
@OutofSpecMotoring 5 лет назад
I’ll be in the camp of waiting to see. As an ex Tesla employee and also just seeing how things are going, I believe the cars are much farther away from FSD than Tesla would want you to think. Again, my opinion. Currently, lane changes aren’t worth $6,000 to me. And as I said before, I don’t keep cars long so a future promise of FSD maybe doing something useful in the future doesn’t mean too much. I’ll buy it, and pay what they’re asking when it does something truly useful for me.
