Today I show how I modeled the open door on an Aurora Miniatures 50ft boxcar. I had some comments and questions about it in the last video.
This technique in ONLY for this brand and model of Boxcar.

Awesome content, you were not kidding when you added, proceed with extreme caution. I added toothpicks to partially hold open the top and that seem to help little. Thank you for posting.

What a great idea. The partially open door is a very realistic look at a warehouse.

I agree, It would be cool if our boxcars could have the doors open but I get it, it would be hard to make them like that without costing a ton.

now that is a pretty neat touch to that car... always nice to have a boxcar that opens... however a prototype note, for those wishing to run these cars with the doors open, it should be noted that cars with open plug doors are automatic BAD ORDER and are not allowed to be run until the door/s are closed... reason why is because they can fall off... now having said that, i've seen my share of open plug doors scootin' down the mainline wondering how the heck did it make it past it's initial terminal inspection without being seen... i guess i gotta get a few of these cars now, really cool

Months ago when I got my first batch and checked one out, this is what I had planned from the start, but haven't yet started one.

The magnets are very clever. What I've done in the past was glue a strip to the back side of the door that runs against the inside of the car wall. It seems you wanted both doors open for the 'view' 😊 which makes it harder to do to. I generally only have one side open, so you can flip the car around to see it as closed door. This effectively gives you 2 cars. It also works for cars with distinct graffiti, making the other side just generic and lighty weathered. That way when you operate can avoid "there goes that car again" to a degree. I hope you'll talk about the cool Kraft rolls. I could use them on my recycle mills dock. Cheers

As I was editing the video, I saw that I could just glue that whole pin up on top of the door and basically have a door track on the back of the door and it would magnetize wherever I wanted it to show the door in any open position. I didn't want to reshoot the scene so...there you go.

For mine I'll need to carefully rotate the door runners so they lineup with the tracks therefore I'll opt not to use magnets most likely so that the intricate door pays don't get broken from handling. But the magnet idea is a great addition in thought which I hadn't given being I haven't started one yet.

What a great idea... Surely the doors can be removed without taking the roof off seeing that you know they are only held on by those 2 plastic pins on each side of the door, just put a blade in there and lightly lever them off.. less work than trying to remove the roof and then having to fix it back on again later.

5/8" and 1/2" Wood dowels from Home Depot cut to length. I was going to put it in a new video about that industry but I might just put out the load info on its own since it would be a pretty short video.

That was a struggle! Wonder if when you get the roof lightly open you could then slide in some coat hanger wire to push out the door on the opposite side. The door looked pretty easy to pop out when you did it on the BKTY boxcar. Great how to vid.

I think if I try it again I will use that screwdriver more to help pop it up.

Neat idea! Are the magnets maybe strong enough that you could glue them inside the box car and the door would still be held in place? That would certainly solve the visual aspect of having conceal/paint the magnets for when the door is closed.

Any chance for a tutorial on the paper rolls in the car & warehouse shown at the beginning of the video?

Seems like it would be easier just to pry the door off instead of the roof.

yeah, possibly. Although there is a risk of damaging the door details. I might carefully give it a try.

Why is the thumbnail for this video "Build simple HO scale paper rolls" when the video is actually "Model an open door on an Aurora miniatures boxcar in HO scàle" ????
