As always please be tactful in the comments. Constructive criticism is fine but all rude, aggressive and out rightly negative comments will be removed. I make for fun, not for competition, and there is no room for hate on my channel as there is enough in the world elsewhere
Disclaimer: Most of the products I use in my videos from AK Interactive, AnyZ & VMS Supplies were sent to me for free, but with no obligations to promote them. The rest are purchased with my own money and built up throughout the years I've been making models on this channel. Being truthful about the products I use and only promoting ones I believe are good enough to use is one of the foundations of this channel. Statements I make are entirely my own and I have not been influenced to promote one product over the other. I cannot be bought and I stand by this to deliver you useful and informative videos.
Time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the Airfix's Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale model kit as shown by The Inner Nerd. This video aims to deliver the fundamental and basic skills and knowledge needed to assemble, paint and weather a small scale kit, using Airfix's Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale model kit. These tools can be considered professional, but this video is about the skills of basic modelling using the correct tools that make the job easier.
This video explains my process in the building, painting and weathering of Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale. I start the video by building the scale model kit using Tamiya and AK Interactive glues and Mr Hobby tools. The key to building the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale is to carefully read the instructions using the tutorial as a guide. Take care in assembling the scale model kit so the parts fit accurately and align as intended.
To paint the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale it is best to use an airbrush. This video covers the airbrush basics so that you can see thinning of paint and application onto the scale model kit. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used in this video along with Ak Interactive Real Colors, Tamiya Acrylics, Mr Hobby Lacquer and Alclad II Metal effect Lacquers. Thinning paint is very important and I explain how to do it using the correct thinners for each paint type.
Decals are applied with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. This is a much more intense product than Micro Sol an Set solution and helps conform even the thickest decals onto the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale model kit.
The final part is the weathering using more AK Interactive weathering products and oil paints from Winsor & Newton and Abteilung 502, weathering washes from AMMO by Mig Jimenez and finally VMS Pigments. I start the weathering with an enamel wash to bring out the panel lines on the scale model kit. I use oil washes from AMMO. To seal in I use a clear acrylic from VMS Matte varnish. More detailed weathering follows using oil paints enabling me to add streaks, grime and bleaching onto the model to give it more used and weathered effect. The VMS matte varnish is airbrushed onto the Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/72 scale. This matte varnish helps weathering as the matte finish allows more oil paint to stain the model surface. Dust and mud weathering effects are created using VMS pigments to imitate the weathering on tyres and undercarriage.

Hi everyone, thanks for watching. The modelling stand I'm using is currently unavailable. Sorry for this inconvenience but I plan to make it available again at www.theinnernerd.com I hope this video will be able to help you out if you're new to modelling or new to some techniques used when making one. I tried to cover everything that has been asked in the comments sections from my other videos but keep it simple at the same time. Sorry if I don't shut up for a lot of the video, there's a lot to cover! Anyway here I go again... Let me know what you think and if you'd like to see more beginner/intermediate tutorial styled videos in the future and if so what should they cover? The Inner Nerd

I've been following you for a long time, I only have one request if you include in the videos the dilution, pressure and size of the needle you use. Always at the top

Okay that's good to know. Just for reference for others too here is my working pressures using my H&S Evo Silverline. The thinning ratios are never calculated to measurement, more paint-by-paint, but if you see here 20:18 and here 21:51 in the video you can see how the paint should spray. 0.15mm needle/nozzle throughout all paintwork. Primers: 12psi Paint: 10psi Clears & Metallic: 8psi

@@hubristicmystic Hello. I would suggest waiting until the next day. Although these AK Real Colours dry to the touch almost instantly, it's best to leave them to properly cure overnight before applying masking tape or it could pull to paint with it when removed

I've been an award winning aeromideller since the early 1970s (and I was aeromodelling even earlier than that). I know (almost) all of the tricks, but I'm happy to say even I have picked up new ideas today. This video should be promoted by all of the aircraft model kit manufacturers. It is absolutely superb. I take my hat off. Indeed, one of my many professional roles is that I'm a consultant educator. Not only do you really know your stuff, but you are a superb educator. Amazing. Such a pleasure to have found you. Now, all I have to do is to find your name and how to get in touch with you. Fantastic. Rick

Wow that's fantastic to hear, there truly are 1001 ways to make a model. With the amount of views this video is receiving I hope that one day it will get spotted, fingers crossed. And I appreciate the kind words, I work hard to try to both capture and convey what's happening on screen in an accessible way so I'm pleased to see that is recognised. On the spectrum of plastic model videos on RU-vid, this is on the "masterclass" end. I have this very kit purchased for 40% off at an after xmas sale (being as cheap as humanly possible is one of the challenges I set for myself). I don't believe spending money makes great models...spending time makes great models. This is a great model upon which you lavished time. Thank you for sharing and i learned a lot about patience, layering, and paint chemistry!

Today is my 67th bday. Your vid transported me back to my youth and attempts at modeling. Last week my best friend who lives across the street and is my age was building a car model. He sounded like he was inviting me to join him. I kind of passed it off thinking I’m too busy. Maybe I’m not and should become a kid again and buy a kit, paint, glue,and some tools and spend time modeling with my buddy.

Happy belated birthday wishes. I hope you did manage to revisit that old memory. So many people have different and very string memories of their first/early models. The smell of glue, the paint pots and brushes. It's a good hobby to get lost and absorbed in if you want it to. Take it as seriously as you like. Best of luck if you do and I'll take pride knowing I played a small part in that return :) Thanks for watching :)

Just found the channel, great stuff. I built models a a kid and am just getting back into to it. Oil stains and air based run marks I place a large blob of paint at the point of exit, then simply hold my model in the orientation of flight and using my air gun I blow the paint in the direction I desire. No need to replicate oil flow marks with a brush when you can use the real thing!!

This let’s me go back to the end 70s beginning 80s where I was really into modeling! Especially early ww2 aircraft. I won many IPMS contests, reaching 1st place in 3 US state’s. It’s astounding how one stagers the search for more authenticity and perfection. Does squadron Green putty still exist? Or Flowquill airbrush paint’s? Airfix was in it’s mold details quite coarse, hasagawa and Tamina was the none plus ultra at that time. But not all models came from good mold’s and one had to adjust the details. One tends to over weather or detail , I think this is where the perfection starts. Often to large rivets or panel joints. Less is often more ! Question does a silver paste still exist? I used it for creating bare metal optics, it’s somewhat oil based so if oversprayed one can use a piece of tape to pull of bits of deck paint on leading edge areas to simulate chipped paint. Nice to see that modeling is still going good. I wonder if kids still get into it? Or has the PlayStation taken all the room ? Nice vid

So many of us older guys seem to be returning to this fabulous hobby. Speaking from my own experience, I tried to introduce my own children to the pleasures of model building but they just didn't get into it, in part because there are so many alternative attractions (including PlayStation and other video games) and also because they didn't have the same affinity for those classic World War Two aircraft that those of us born in the decades after the war felt. There was also an issue with patience! Back in the day, if the weather was too nasty to allow us to play outside, there really weren't that many other ways to enjoy play time but building a model aircraft was most certainly one of the most appealing ones for many of us.

Man I remember the smell of testors paints in my room, funny I used to listen to a lot of velvet underground while building my models. Cheers man, you pointed out some things that as a already modeler wouldn’t think to explain to a new comer!

Just from reading your comments accompanying the video I can see you are a perfectionist with professional attention to detail. I wonder if younger viewers still have the mindset for this in the new media driven throw away society. Your personality shines in the build. Is model building your only hobby sir? I am 66 and perhaps trying my hand at too many activities, As my father used to say - Jack of all trades and master of none. None of these supplies are available where I live in Eswatini Africa - In fact there is not a single hobby shop in the entire country. It does make the hobby extremely expensive as you have to import every single item - if you can afford to do so. Best build channel I have found to date. Keep up the great work.

I try my best to share what I've learned to viewers, being that guide I looked for when I started to make models again. There does seem to be a younger audience still in this hobby which is nice to see. The TV doesn't always fill that void and need to actually make something luckily. I do have other hobbies which are all part of the channel - photography, film making, 3D printing - so that's also why I started the channel, one mega project to bring them all together. I'm sorry to hear that the hobby isn't accessible in Africa, I hope my channel fills that need for you. Thanks for watching :)

Well as I mentioned in the video this equipment is what I've built up over the 5 years I've run the channel and been modelling. I'm doing this alongside a full time job unlike some of the other RU-vidrs. But I hope the message got through that you don't need the most expensive tools, just higher quality ones combined with some good techniques and processes can make a relatively good model at the end. The skills throughout the video are what is needed to make a model to this standard, whether people think that is good or not is another debate. But there are many more processes that I missed out or simplified in an attempt to keep the video beginner to intermediate friendly. The only tools to make this were the ones shown at the beginning at the video. So some snips, a pin vise, sandpapers, tapes and an airbrush, then of course the paints of your choice. If you're new to modelling you don't necessarily need all of these immediately to make a model, but you will to make one turn out like this. Thanks for watching :)

@TheInnerNerd 3 года назад
Thank you for watching :) Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. You'll need to learn the basic techniques I outline in the video before trying them all out with the more professional equipment. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. That is the bare bones of what will help you make a scale model. All of the other stuff is to add the effects like weathering and to get the decals to sit properly - but isn't entirely necessary if you don't want to - that can come later :) There is a link in the description to a good starter setup for an airbrush. Don't go expensive straight away - learn the ropes first before you splash out on an expensive brush. And also a more expensive brush isn't actaully necessary. The airbrush in the description is easily good enough as long as you keep it clean. I think it's a myth that a super expensive airbrush will do a bette rjob. In my experience the quality comes from the paint and thinning along with pressure adjustment. Unless you're painting miniatures an expensive brush is a little bit overkill. I hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

I will use some of the equipment and techniques from this video in my next build and will probably return again to this video in future. So yes, for a simple build using paints, glue and a single brush from a starter kit, this video is over complicated but for a beginner who wants to take the hobby seriously and produce a decent finished model this video is probably the best of its kind on RU-vid

@@TheInnerNerd That’s exactly what I thought you were doing: Mostly for a nice demonstration and partly for a “Test” or “Warm up” towards the high visibility important parts. I noticed you use silver for your chipped paint aluminum effect. Dad used to do that in a whiteish very very light gray. If you look at any aluminum that has a patina (age/oxidation), it’s a whitish color and not a bright silver. I’m not trying to be impolite to your “Mad skills” (As the kids say), but Dad and I built some great models. We did lots of 1/48 WWII fighters and bombers and also some nice WWI planes and a huge Gotha bomber where the thread rigging took longer than the model itself! Thank you, Sir.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 2 года назад
That’s right it does look more matte than bright silver. I’ll try that out the next time I get to use the effect. I find it interesting how our mind can trick us into seeing what we know it to be, not actually what it is. The same reason I don’t use black in my weathering (unless it needs it) because we think dirt is black, but dark blue or brown is often much more realistic.

I built my first plastic model kit I received as a gift at Christmas 1959. This was a Monogram Gruman F4F moulded in appropriately coloured dark blue plastic. Back then modeling supplies were pretty thin on the ground as we're hobby stores. But who knew, we worked with what was available and what our folks could give us at birthdays and Christmas. Latter, as there became a wider range of kits and scales available we could drop hints for gift giving opportunities-sometimes these were ignored in favour of lesser price point kits. Being young and keen, I happily built what I'd been given. But then, special interests developed and so I went for gold on those as the meagre dollars allowed. Building propellor aircraft mainly - fighters in 1/48, bombers and civilian airliners in 1/72. I prefer scale compatibility as a pleasing aesthetic. It's not so easy devoting time to model building when there is employment and a social life to keep a fella otherwise occupied. Then raising a family, working two jobs leaves little time, money and space to enjoy the hobby. Now long into retirement, there is time and space and watching what I spend in other areas of discretionary spending along with a now tortoise slow time to finish each kit building with the sun shinning on my work bench and gentle on my mind, a warm glow of keeping busy and achievment keeping me company also. Super excellent programmes like this one and of which there are now many, thanks to the presenters and the YT platform, tutorials available with the huge benefit that even we, very average model kit builders, can also build near show quality models.

Great reference video! Like many, I made Tamiya models when I was a lot younger and was in total admiration of the finishes the professionals achieved. Your video has shown that with an airbrush (now affordable - we had an old Humbrol one that was awful back in the day !!) and some basic material great results can be achieved. I received a couple of stocking filler kits for Christmas and the supplies are on their way so I can do a better job than the last lot - many thanks

I think many of us started that way haha, with each build we get better and I'm pleased to see that my video is helping others with that too :) Best of luck with the new kits and thanks for watching :) Enjoy :)

Really enjoy your vids! models are a hot cold hobby of mine, started a mig 29 months ago and just picked it up again a few days ago and finished it because you gave me inspiration again. Its my second model and it isnt much but it always feels good to complete one. Havent done weathering yet so thats the next challenge I guess..

Thank you :) Well you can complete them at your own pace, that's the beauty of this hobby - once you start it - it's your own creation :) I'm pleased to hear that I have been able to inspire you to complete you Mig-29 though. I'll have to do one of those one day... I hope you can take some techniques from this video amongst my others too to help you when it comes to weathering. Thanks for watching :)
