I finally have a brand new updated car course available, check it out here - cgmasters.com/3d-cars-inside-...
In this Blender tutorial we'll be modeling the rim for a Jeep Wrangler. You'll learn hard surface modeling techniques, the importance of a systematic approach for objects with symmetry, using snapping tools and "guide meshes" for curved surfaces, and you'll end up with an accurate result with perfect topology.
Download the start files here: cgmasters.com/tutorials/jeep_...
Music for the trailer is by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) and shared under Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution

What I like to do when modeling rims is to use a mirror modifier on half of the 5th spoke(in this case), and then add an array modifier using an Empty rotated 72º as object offset in the array modifier. This way you can see the whole rim at all times, and you can even modify something on it after finishing it because it is non destructive.

Yeah that's definitely a handy setup for rims thanks for commenting! -Chris

17:30 Took me ages to figure out the snapping in 2.80. Set it (the little magnet icon) to face, closest, and check "project individual elements." You MUST be in front view (for me this was 3 on the Numpad) to look at your target face directly head on. Then press G and left click to accept. If you're looking at your target face at an angle, the segments will be projected at an angle.

I'd just want to point out, all automotive linework has curvature. Rarely do we ever work in purely straight lines. If you look close enough; everything should have some bit of crown to it; even the modeling on the wheels. So while it might look straight to the naked eye; the blue print is correct; that crown is intended.

@stevenb4956
@stevenb4956 7 лет назад
Ok so I consolidated my comments into one. 2:21 One fifth of an area is called a quintant - noun - 1. a sextant having an arc equal to one fifth of a circle. source: www.dictionary.com/browse/quintant 21:32 I believe that was an idea taken from the f2 ad-on. I forget when it was added. Don't forget how to use it because it's insanely useful and time-saving. You can also hold down the "F" key instead of pressing it multiple times. Just let go when you have the faces you want and it will stop adding more. 25:26 an easier way to do this is just select both vertices and press j. 35:40 instead, just press shift+h. This will hide everything except for your selection. Same result but faster.
@blengine
@blengine 7 лет назад
Thanks for the info! For the J key info especially, didn't know about that and it's super useful. -Chris

@blengine
@blengine 6 лет назад
Thanks for the compliments =) I've been using blender for 15 years so a lot of it is instinctual at this point, but let me think about what I keep in mind when I start modeling. For a complex model I usually start with something simple, like the hood of a car, to build momentum. I also use it as a starting point and build directly around it. So having a logical starting point is important. When it comes to topology, I first think of what lines need to be part of the object, and I usually draw them first then I build around them. For the rim specifically, before recording this I just planned out the topology mentally by looking at reference photos. Obviously I don't mentally lay out every face of the object, but I come up with a general plan which includes thinking about how modifiers could come in handy. That's pretty much the general idea =) -Chris

if you make the outer rim in 40 vertices, that would result in needing a inner rim of an equal value, or is that not always the case? Thought it was interesting that you ended up with the same vertex count on the outer and inner end of the rim.

Looks awesome! One question: why did you choose to "manually" mirror and rotate instead of using the mirror / array modifier with a 72° rotated empty object? Wouldn't that make it easier to edit the model later if you spot any errors or want to change anything?
@blengine
@blengine 7 лет назад
I actually forget exactly why I didn't use those modifiers because I do use that setup for similar tasks. I'm pretty sure I just didn't expect any trouble from this particular rim,, but seeing as how I had some misaligned vertices during the process that modifier setup would've been more efficient. -Chris

I'm not really sure of the reasoning for not using an array modifier for this as it would allow you to go back and edit an individual segment if you needed to without having to delete sections and re-spin it each time. As far as I can see there is no advantage to not using it.

Background images work differently in the latest versions of Blender. The wheel blueprint is packed into the blend file still though, so you can go to File > External Data > Unpack in order to save that file to your computer. Then you can press Shift+A and add an Background Image object where you can then load in that blueprint image. I have a car model for a game I play and the side skirt on it is supposed to be relatively flat, maybe a little curved in. I can see basically the triangles that make up that piece in Blender and in the game engine after I texture it. Is there some sort of "shade smooth" or what would the keyword I want to look up? Everything else on the car looks fine, but I don't know the keywords to look up to see how to fix it. Thank you in advance, I plan on buying your Car Creation Gumroad package so I can "work from scratch" if you will... right now I am just playing with pre-existing models and having a blast. I used to develop in Second Life, so this is all familiar, but I'm still uneducated on the verbiage so I can Google things.

It sounds like it's either shaded as solid still, or there's something weird going on with either the normals or the geometry. The first thing you should try is to select the model in Blender, then Right Click and choose "Shade Smooth". Hopefully that's all the issue is. If that isn't the issue, I would recommend posting on a site like blenderartists.org and asking for some help troubleshooting. Don't forget to share the model too so they can see the issue themselves.

@@blengine Thank you! I'll check that out when I get home tonight. I didn't think I'd enjoy 3d modelling as much as I do, but your videos make it easy to get started.

@@blengine i have a problem with scaling towards and from the 3d cursor,when i try to do it either a quick select menu pops up, or im just adding the dots in the scaling value, what do i do?

vertices not snapping to the objects individual surface normals/location. Some vertices just dont reach the surface of the face.

Hey, send the latest blend that has the issue to me at contact@cgmasters.net and I'll see if I can figure out what's going wrong. -Chris

@@blengine Hey man. Thanks for the reply. I might have figured it out but in 2.82 the ctrl key might not be necessary. I only clicked the g key and enter. If I click the ctrl key the vertices wont snap instead. I am not sure if I was missing something. Thanks for the tutorial.

@@johndc7446 Ah do you have the magnet icon in the header enabled? That's for automatic snapping where you don't need to press ctrl. Ctrl in that case would disable snapping. I like to keep the magnet turned off and just use ctrl. Either way glad you got passed that part.

@@blengine I see. That probably explains it. Thanks for the tutorial again.

How do you make your "T" or "F6" menu reset to default after changing the values there? Like when you did when adding circles, every time you added a new circle the number of vertecies was 32 and you changed them to 40. Every time i add a circle and change vert count to 40, that value somehow saves, and every new circle i add will be added with 40 verts and i want it to be the default value of 32 for example. It's kind of annoying. I'm not sure if you understand what i mean. :)

It actually doesn't reset in my files either. It resets when re-opening blend files though and that's what's happening here. I often don't record longer tutorials in one sitting so when you see the numbers reset in my tutorials it's just because I've re-opened the blend files. -Chris

Ah, makes sense, well thanks anyways. I wish they'd add that option, for us to at least have a choice in the matter

im bad in english and i don't understand your pronunciation about the key to type before the S to scale the vertices @3,27 the coma key ? the command key ? the ok micky ? how do you switch between this two kind of scaling ? thx
@blengine

Yes the comma key ( , ) and the period key ( . ) switch between both types of pivot points (3d cursor and bounding box). At the bottom of the 3d View there is also a pivot point menu where you can change this without using hotkeys. It's to the right of the shading menu. -Chris

Is there a tool in Blender, or a script or plugin I can download, that will do the same thing, or close to it, as the SetFlow tool in MAX? I want to retain the curvature of my model.

I'm not sure, closest thing I know if is the LoopTools add-on. I haven't been able to get this to work properly for edges but it works perfect for vertices. After enabling the add-on you select a loop of vertices and press W > LoopTools > Space, and it will space them out evenly. Maybe you can change settings in the operator menu to make it work for edges but I never figured it out if so. -Chris

Hey, let's go through the checklist to rule out a missed step: 1 - Makes sure you're in Shaded view (17:10)... 2 - Change the snap element to Face (17:13)... 3 - Enable Project Individual Elements (17:20)... 4 - Press G to enable movement of the vertices, then hold the Ctrl key to enable snapping(17:34). Let me know if that helps. -Chris

A side / W / select hide (/H/) and 5. only select B side vertextes and / CTRL + G / menu: vertextes group->assign to new groups and 6. limit select to visible switch on ! - - - and 7. magnet menü: snap select -> faces , but B side vertextes, B side keep, dwell !!!! and next 8. / ALT + H / :) I don't no english!
