On the topic of Gisele’s kids and getting them to do chores. It made me think of Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies. Her daughter sounds like either an upholder/obliger while her son is definitely a questioner/rebel. As a rebel myself, I appreciate how she gave her son “information-consequence-choice” she very clearly gave him some good reasons and even allowed him to make choices which is so important for that type. My parents never really did this which turned the rebel up in me even more! Okay done being nerdy.

Nice conversation. I like the message she brings and that she qualifies herself as not an expert. I guess it my cynical side about celebrities with interviews like this who state having this lifestyle but what’s the true reality? She has lived a privileged life but she has avoided the pitfalls many other famous people have encountered. Certainly her wealth makes it easier in some ways to live this way but we all have our hardships and I applaud her for having her priorities and doing her best for herself and children.

I came to the U.S when I was 22 years old and work as nanny for years and I save most my money for years finally I was able to buy her a house ,sent her money every two months. Until today I'm very careful with my money, my priority is so different from others, maybe is because I know how hard is not to have enough.

I love that analogy of getting to different levels with different tools to live better.

I cannot stand when people say "no one was talking about meditation and yoga 20 years ago"...I am 43, 20 years ago I was practicing both, as were many of my friends. there was no social media 20 years ago, so our meditation and yoga was not performative and didn't make us money, it was for ourselves. A bit tired of celebrities acting like they invented everything.

I agree. I've been teaching and practicing for 40 years.

@@diavale499 Perhaps, I have a skewed perspective living in a large city (NYC) and also visiting Boston and LA from the mid-80s until 2007, when I moved west to PA. The classes I attended and taught as far back as the mid-80s at places like Jivamukti, Dharma Mittra, Kundalini Yoga East, Kripalu Yoga, Integral Yoga, and others were always filled with avid yoga and meditation practitioners. Even at health clubs where I taught, the classes were packed. Yoga was already being taught at the United Nations when I began teaching there in the late 80s. Yoga and meditation were often a part of the acting curriculum at studios like H.B. Studios in Tribeca. Leslie Kaminoff, the well-known author of Anatomy of a Yogi was actively teaching in the mid-80s and started The Breathing Project in 2001. In the summers, beginning in the late 80s, I used to attend a Solstice gathering in NM that consistently had over a thousand people in attendance. Just a little history... Peace touting hippies from the 60s and 70s (oh, those were the days) were looking for meaning, direction, and purpose in their lives and many became attracted to the "gurus" - some authentic, some attention-seeking fakes - coming from the East. The book, Autobiography of a Yogi, written in 1946, was wildly popular, as it remains to this day. You saw Hari Krishna folks in orange chanting and handing out flyers in airports and elsewhere. You saw white turbaned American Sikhs. The well-known Kripalu Yoga in Stockbridge, Ma, first began offering classes and workshops in 1973. Integral Yoga (Swami Satchidananda)) opened its doors in 1966. Ashrams began sprouting up in American and across the world. Let's not forget the wild popularity of Transcendental Meditation, starting in the early 60s. At the time, what you didn't see were people wearing fancy work-out clothes and touting $100 yoga mats. You didn't see yoga retreats and teacher trainings costing thousands of dollars a pop. If you're interested, I invite you to check out this interesting article coming out of Harvard: The Rush of Gurus. pluralism.org/the-rush-of-gurus Here's another overview of the history of yoga in the U.S., written by the respected yoga historian, Philip Deslippe: www.history.com/news/yoga-vivekananda-america. And, here's another quick informative article from Yoga Journal speaking to the history of yoga and meditation in America: www.yogajournal.com/yoga-101/history-of-yoga/yogas-trip-america/ You are right about yoga being wildly popular now. What I thought might be a fad, especially starting in the mid-90s when there was a huge uptake in interest and attendance to yoga and meditation classes, has turned into a huge money-making machine. If you follow Rich, you might be interested in checking out his wife, Julie Piatt. She might be a good resource for you if you have any interest in the history of yoga. I make no claims to being a yoga historian, but as someone who witnessed the popularity of yoga first-hand from the mid-80s on, I can tell you that yoga took hold in America earlier than most people think. If you've made it this far, congratulations. Possibly far more than you wanted to read. :)
