long over due trike! XR650l has been around unchanged for 30yrs, tons of parts and aftermarket. People will be lining up for this when you guys make a kit
Awesome machine!! I'd definitely recommend an auxiliary oil cooler and temp gauge since the front tire is blocking alot of air. Then throw a big bore kit and cams in that thing along with xr's only full exhaust. I have two 650l's one being stock and the other with mentioned mods. Night and day difference. I also changed out second gear for a shorter one and put in a taller 5th gear so she can run 100mph+. Again I love this build and wouldn't mind making one of these if you offered to sell some of these conversion parts.
I know you’ve made many different trikes and I’ve seen alot of them. Every time you make a new one it’s my favorite. I can’t think of any better engine choice for a modern day big red then a 650 that’s so badass. It’s so cool to see someone so passionate about big wheel bikes and 3 wheeled trikes. I grew up riding trikes since I was 8 yrs old on a honda 70 3wheeler with no suspension front or back lol. I love watching your vids keep doin what your doin. I can’t wait to see this finished. It be cool to see that next to a Honda 70, I think that the tires would be bigger then the whole trike.
I have 2 Honda Trx700xx...Because it love the big Bore Honda's more than any woman iv dated! I grew up on 3 wheelers and a Trx700xx 3 wheeler would b epic especially with the independent rear suspension...I wonder?? How that work?
@@freedom7047 It's a 650 single, so ya, for low end torque there is not much better in an atc. Stock big red is around 14ftlbs of torque, 650 is 48. In case you are not an engine guy torque monster refers to initial pulling power from idle, not top rpm sales brochure engine torque specs guys brag about but never use.
Perfect platform for a big trike ...had a new 1985 Xl 600 ..can remeber seeing trike kits available then ...30+ years later ..bigger & better ...good job
You guys are deffinatly onto something with this this is gonna b awsome think of all the other xr models out there to make modern reds with haha keep it up guys and can't wait to see the quad kits aswell!
Dude, first video of yours I've seen, just now. Totally called it on the type of engine u used in big red, w/ just a glance. That made me happy. I'm subscribing now. i hope to get a phatt scatt of my own one day. Thanks for the inspiration
Hated that an it was restrictive. On some you could pull the baffle out. But the super trap was a great pipe an you could but more slots in it to give it that deeper tone. I never had a xr650 or 350x but dam near had everything in-between lol.
Love what you guys are doing I grew up on three wheelers. Me and my brother made brackets and bolted up a three wheeler axle on an old rm 250 twenty five years ago and it was the sketchiest thing you’ve ever seen. Your trikes are so cool.
I'd LOVE to see a pic of that too! Wish I had some pics of the 'Fatter Cats' we made out of a few 185s and 200s's back in the 90's- man, the parts were SO plentiful back then! A buddy that owned a 'salvage'/M/C used parts biz used to throw out SO much 70-110-185/200-200X stuff back then, he'd fill the dumpster like once a month with everything from wheels/tires to decent plastix- NO ONE wanted the stuff then... people would drop ATC'S off for him and just leave it cuz he had so much already, he'd tell them he didn't wanna buy it and they'd just jump in the their trucks and leave the ATC as soon as the phone rang or he walked into the warehouse for something. A few times, he showed up on Tuesday(closed on Mondays!) and there would be a trike or few blocking the door to get INTO the shop LOL! Crazy to think about how many ATC's there were back then. Here in S. Florida, back then, 110 and 185's were unrealistically plentiful... you could buy a brand new ATC110 for $599 on sale at the local Honda dealership! With labor and parts costs, if a 110 and even 185/200 'blew-up', or more like 'wore-out'(a blue smoker) back then, a piston kit, head freshen-up, timing chain, gasket and front sprocket(always did sprocket replacement when you'd go that far into the cases) it would cost $500 or more... so it was easier and realistically more cost effective to just REPLACE the entire thing- they were basically 'disposable' for a good few years throughout a lot of the 80's! WOW- I went off on a tangent LOL- Well, the short of it was- frankenstein-ing things back then was EASY and CHEAPER than cheap! I just wish I held the knowledge, tools and experience in fabbing back then as I am graced with currently. Now, parts and whole ATC's are kinda ridiculous mostly... or completely ragged out. LOVE your builds!!! I subbed for sure, look forward to checking out more of the existing content y'all have and new as well... THANKS!!!
In addition to my previous comment, I just did a dive on the XR650 and I was wondering when it was updated last. Still air cooled and carbureted, only five speeds, non inverted forks, that oh so 80’s speedometer. Blast from the past.
Just pull a pallet around your gravel with the big red. It will smooth it right out. Looking forward to racks and maybe a redesigned spotlight/ headlight.
Nice workagain Fellas 👍 Now Please putan Exhaust on that thing 😁 I never could stand the sound of the XL's . Hey you ought see if you could make a street legal version 🤔 Back in 1987 we were on a major Freeway down by Hunnington Beach and low and behold here comes a guy up the on ramp on a Street Legal 1986 ATC 250r , had blinkers on it , a better tail light and a motorcycle license plate on it . He was ripping right along , it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen 😁 Another cool video bro , and really enjoy seeing the trikes you guys turn out!!!! Great work 👏👏👏
Clearly the 650 will blow away the 250. What a killer build, too! I love the old Big Reds, and to have a modern version with a monster engine would be amazing. The width of that front fork is so cool. I hope you pit the front and rear racks on it, too. Gotta have someplace for a cooler and a dead deer 🤓👍
You guys really are doing God's work 💪🙏👌 If only I had an XR650R or even one of my old CB750's, I'd be dropping my bike off to you guys to make a crazy trike (preferably the 650R, but wouldn't it be cool to have a CB750 Four Scrambler style Trike? 😅
Can't wait to see the final product ripping it up! The fit and finish of everything you've built so far has looked like perfection. I think I'll vote for the original when you play tug-of-war. No clutch might give it a slight edge. Its a tough call, cause dropping the gearing on your new masterpiece might take away that slight edge. I'm more sticking with the original because I turn 50 this year and us old farts gotta stick together. Have a great day everyone!
I seen a 400 ex with a 650 XR engine in it. That thing ripped so hard. Love the classics. Of course all mine the top ends where wore out from not running the right exhaust. I use to have many Hondas. Huge Honda fan.
I'm not sure what makes this a Big Red build, it seems more like a 200X build. A Big Red is all about being shaftdrive with reverse and semi auto shifting which allows heavy-duty work/technical terrain and towing without stalling. With that being said this trike is going to be sick as hell!
I know its extreme but have you think about making one shaftdrive ? I mean the difference between an sx atc vs the bigred was the shaft nd his utility the 650 would be perfect with a shaft nd a hitch 😎
@@BVCOFFROAD It’s an enjoyment to view your remarkable builds getting Familiar with your crew, etc. I have a 2004 Honda XR 650 R also known as the ‘Big Red Pig’. Due to it is very thrusting! Johnny Campbell my hero! Was thinking about turning it into an ATC! I have a 3 1/2 gallon dessert tank. Not sure if triple clamps would hit when turning? Thoughts of cost ball park? Red Riders! 👍👍
This is probably a stupid question, but if you built this on an XR650L that's licensed for the street, would this trike be street legal by proxy? I mean, you'd need rear fenders and the lighting kit, but would it?
