ss economy class...proved that chevy was king..from the corvette down to their economy they made speed...kudos to the performance guys...just goes to show you you can still turn sedate rides into performance machines just like muscle car days of old turning family sedans into monsters...tradition of performance rages on:)
Not to mention the gmpp stage 1 turbo upgrade that bumps it to 280hp 320ft/lbs and maintains factory warranty. I have yet to see a car at this price level that makes me want to get rid if my 09 SS. It was faster around VIR than the EVO, STI, and challenger srt8, plus I average 24 mpg not too bad for the $16k I bought it for used in 2010
Yes it does. It's usually referred to as the G85 code as pulling the trunk carpet up, on the left side of the trunk floor is a sticker denoting G85 as the build code indicating the car has the LSD option.
Great choice! As the proud owner of a 2009 Cobalt SS turbo, I understand better than most that this car is extremely fun. One of the most underrated aspects is the fact that, unlike many muscle cars, this sport compact provides a great view of the road, not a huge, view-blocking hood that you must peer over. I just had mine tuned to produce over 300hp and 340ft/lbs. of torque at the wheel. Can't wait to smoke some unsuspecting V8 cars...and I'll still get 35 mpg cruising to find my victim!
The 2003-2004 SVT Cobra Mustang would make a great video for this series. The SVT cars are collectible by themselves, but these cars were extremely unique in fords line. It was pretty much the only mustang that came from the factory with a rear independent suspension plus it had 390+ hp stock.
Since these cars are turbo charged they can beat many cars on the street, just raise the boost to 16PSI and you got a Pocket Rocket lol. They are extremely fast once Tuned to about 350Wheel Horsepower.
@@turbo_co27 So , you're telling me that 3 of you guys have 1 any there is only 471 left now?! I used to have a Cavalier Sport the year before GM transitioned to the Cobalt though and loved the look but how reliable is the Cobalt?
KreativeCuts well, also excluding all the other people that have them, the wrecked ones, and the ones boomers turned into DF Goblins. SS’s are vastly different reliability wise than the base models, and the turbo is great. Replace the timing chain and head gasket once at like 150k, use 91, and you’re golden. SC’s are a tad different, but they’re also pretty good.
Can you make a review on a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. There were really little of them made and I think it's a cool looking car. It's really rare to see on the streets. Now that Pontiac are gone they are all rare
I test drove a 2007 a few years ago, and it just freaked me out. I couldn't take off in first gear without getting a little burn out. I took it back to the dealership and test drove an Impala SS with the 5.3. I was sold. Worse fuel economy by far, but MUCH better manners. They had 1 other car on the lot that I wanted to drive. The wife of the dealership's owner's 2007 Caddy CTS-V, with a 6 speed. With 82K miles, impeccably maintained, and for only $22K. Which one do you think I bought ?
Running 06 LT manual with 150K miles. Haven't had anything major wrong with it and replacing some stock suspension parts that have worn out. Fun little car.
I still have mine and running good. Brakes have been a issue I still don't use my e brake and tried it all to fix it. Random interior noises and suspension noise like clunking but other than that all good.
I want the cobalt 60 special with the nuclear energy symbol on the hatch lid front fenders and center hub of the steering wheel And Enrico Fermi signature on passenger side instrument panel
I remember wanting the Chevy Cobalt SS so badly when I was in 8th or 9th grade! IT WAS MY DREAM CAR! And my definition of a dream car was something attainable, affordable, fast, and BAD ASS!!! I was also lusting over the Chevy HHR SS and the Dodge Caliber SRT4! The good ol' days...
Thanks for creating this awesome new series. I look forward to seeing the future videos. A few modern collectibles that come to mind for me are the Mazdaspeed 6, Mazdaspeed Miata and Pontiac Solstice Coupe due to their very limited runs.
Cobalt SS is definitely faster than the Neon. It has more horsepower, more torque, limited slip differential and they weigh nearly the same. Plus the Cobalt comes with standard launch control, steering wheel activated bluetooth and air bags in every direction in case the Neon you're pulling away from decides to side swipe you out of jealousy.
You forgot to mention that at one point in time it was the fastest fwd car around the nurburgring and the no lift shift feature for quick shifts on manual trans..
great job guys. you should look into doing the Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6. like the 09' SS here they had a couple years of low number production, and they're fasssstttt.
I have 1 of 479 sedans built ( 1 of 67 in sport red tint coat). This is a helluva fun car and tears ass around the track. Given how rare and hard it is to find a Sedan only a few years after production ended, I'm sure these will be collectables down the road. It will be hard to find one that wasn't modified though.
I would like to say (10 years later) that this car is very hard to find. Economy is shit rn of course, but I see these go used for $10K on Facebook marketplace.
Got an 09 XFE 5 speed demo in 10' with 60 miles on it...at 51,000 today n still get over 30 mpg in Pittsburgh with traffic. Not a bad car when on a budget
Bobby Lutz! Too bad not 6 Speed but Quaife LTD made a conversions kit to add another gear and there is a Quaife ATB available. Roman, you should have another conversion video installing a Quaife ATB to show the difference in driving.
What about a Saturn Ion Redline edition??? Only 5000 were made from 2003 to 2007, you dont see them much but its a nice car, the plastic body panels make it lighter that the cobalt too
Cool new feature. Would love to see you review a Chevy SSR. Also it looks like you switched to using a GoPro for your stuck-on-the-bodywork shots. How is that working out for you?
Nurburgring time of 8:22.85, 2.85 seconds slower than a 2010 Camaro SS, also faster than the Porsche Cayman S, Lotus Exige s, Nissan 350z, Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8, Mitsubishi Evo VI and VII...... its a really really fast car, and as far as I can tell still the fastest front wheel drive car that was ever sold in the U.S. Pretty impressive, good choice guys!
Cobalt Nation Haha reliable vehicle! I never had an SS turbo but have wanted one because a 2009 cobalt was my first and current car. Goes to show why some would want these in the future.
I have a 2008 SS/TC and you are wrong about brembos on all 4 wheels. It's only the front. No need for the rear brakes to be bremobs... Also forgot to mention no lift shit when in comp mode.
I have a 2020 Hyundai Elantra GT N Line on California ground I have done 0-60 in 6.3 seconds and 1/4 mile 14.4 and I have the 7 speed CVT. It chirps a lot in first gear if I had stickier tires I definitely would be 0-60 under 6 seconds and 1/4 mile in high 13’s. My cars only mod is axle back exhaust.
Modern collectibles.. I like the segment! How bout a review on a Dodge Intrepid 1996 V6 3.4! It was aggressive, fast, tourqe-e and a spacious family saloon! It was the first car I drove but damn, I was hooked from the first drive!
This car is hella fast and capable but... haha. Back in 08 when I was looking for a new car I was checking out everything under 25K. GTI was great, but couldnt turn off traction control. WRX was above 25k and was the new ugly body. Mazdaspeed 3 was also above 25k. Went to the LA Auto show, sat in the new Cobalt, which I have been waiting for with the new turbo motor. Holy shit this interior is garbage. I know the car is fast, but I just couldnt live with that interior everyday. So I bought a Civic Si Sedan. Great car and has served me well. Next car will be 2015 WRX ;-)
You're not a car guy if you whine about the interior. Really? As long as they put their all into the engine/transmission should be the only thing that matters. If I touch soft touch materials daily I'll be happy
***** Pushing the ESP OFF button doesn't actually fully defeat the traction control. It turns it down a bit and might let you spin the tires a little more freely, but it will still eventually intervene. The only way to *truly* turn ESP fully off would be to pull the fuse the ESP system is on - and by doing so, you also disable ABS as well as a few other things I can't remember off the top of my head (possibly the airbags as well). Definitely not recommended.
***** I promise you - traction control is *fully* defeatable in very few cars sold in the US that are equipped with such a system from the factory. Like I said, pressing that button will let you spin the tires off the line from here to kingdom come, but if you don't believe me, try this (carefully, and AT YOUR OWN RISK): turn ESP off, find a flat gravel road, and at a safe speed - say, 25-35 mph, cut the wheel back and forth to get some fishtailing going on. Depending on exactly how your car implements stability control, it will definitely intervene in some way - most likely by applying the brakes to one or more wheels to try and control your slides, and depending on your speed, it may cut the throttle as well. I'm not sure if it's mandated by law or implemented independently by car manufacturers for liability reasons, but nearly every recent vehicle that has a traction or stability control system in it, regardless of whether it has a button that "disables" said program, you (99.9% of the time) cannot fully disable it without removing a fuse or circumventing it using some other unconventional method.
***** I wanted to post this separately since I'm willing to bet RU-vid's spam filters remove it, but here is a 16-page thread specifically pertaining to the ESP in various VW vehicles, including the GTI, explaining that it isn't fully defeatable without removing a fuse: forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5613909-Electronic-Stability-Control-How-to-turn-off-disable
Corey Gilmore I think there are *many* true "car guys" that would disagree with you - especially those such as myself who drive more than 80 miles every day. It all depends on what qualities you're looking for in a car. Some car guys like cars that are all about speed, others like cars that have a bunch of gadgets that aren't full-on race cars, etc. I consider myself a "true car guy," and while I agree that the car should have a great engine and transmission, I don't want to spend my time in said car if the interior isn't a somewhat welcoming place to be. Not every car aficionado needs a NASCAR or a Top Fuel dragster to be satisfied...for many of us, there's more to a car than an engine and transmission.
I use to have one of those except it was black and had the Rpd not the mechanical boost gauge shame you couldn't get your hands on one of those. Oh and I bet Andre would have gone faster to 60 if he did the No lift shift this car has Makes for a nice Pop out of the exhaust and a puff of smoke its awesome!!.
The G8 is a great car but not sure if it'll ever become collectible considering there is hundreds of thousands around the world, mostly in it's country of manufacture, Australia. However in Australia and New Zealand there was a variant of the Holden Commodore (G8) called a HSV W427 and only 138 were built at a cost of $150,000 AUD.
Geesh, A Commodore HSV going for 150K, can get them for alot less in Canada ( G8 ). I wonder how much better the performance is, Commodore HSV vs G8 GT.
I liked the bigger rear wing better and the other rims. I still see a lot of Cobalt SS around. LOL I had a Cobalt SS in a NFS video game and it was the fastest car in the game!
Those are fun cars and being a Cobalt most people will dismiss it out of hand. That is what leads to future collectibles. GM actually did a pretty good job on that car and they are fun and fast. The GLH was a fun car too. Wouldn't mind running across one.
Cavalier Z24 were never made to be collectible cars, as the cars in its class...civics, Sentra, escort, shadow/neon, or Corolla coupes during their time. If you want a collectible car you'd buy a corvette, 30, or 35 anniversary Camaro, or a 30th annual T/A. Not a Z24. I had a 1988 Z24 5 speed with 245,000 miles on it, and sold it in decent shape, and still running strong. With proper maintenance I'm quite sure a cobalt will do the same. I owned an SS also.
He did not use the No Lift Shit Option he would have been faster 0-to -60 times. Just hold down the Gas pedal and shift buddy i have a 2009 4 door Cobalt SS i surprise people all the time because no one hardly has seen a 4 door version like mine.
oh considering that people collect the craziest kinds of cars, depending on so many different criteria, this indeed does have a good chance of becoming a future highly sought after collectible. just shortly after they went out of production demand has slowly been rising for these, they are wicked fast little performers and corner cutters considering what they are, they even make most japanese and golf gti s look bad, even when that segment is actually their strongpoint. greets from germany.
i had this car, it had SO MANY problems, but for 23.5k it was the best bang for your buck at the time. but like i said it stayed in the shop. after warranty expired i sold it and never looked back.
Hey guy I'm a big fan of your channel. I want to ask some experts like you guys for an honest opinion. I'm looking into buying a new crossover. I'm considering the chevy equinox, the ford escape, and the toyota rav4. Which would be the best choice and why? Hope you guys can help. Thanks and keep up the great channel.
I got my 08' SS for under $9000 Canadian. Got it at 65xxxkm and it's never seen a winter. It's a decent little car that I used to get to work. Complaints I would have is the interior is pretty much garbage but I keep it clean so it looks alright. It's super slow off the line. It corners ok but a little bit heavy feeling in the corners. I think my Camaro took corners better than this. It torque steers all over the place which would probably only be worse with power. The power window motors and sunroof motors sound like they are going to die at anytime. I had a 2000 Acura TL that had that perfect window up and down and sunroof opens on command feel. Under the hood the wire that runs across the firewall burns up because it's too close to the charge pipe. Wire loom needs to be high heat. The doors rot on these too and the quarters. Oh yeah and there's that bad casting problem with the blocks. But otherwise great little car hehe ;).
