I own this car and I owned the supercharged version in 2005 when they first came out. I am kind of a super-fan of the cobalt SS. Alot of ppl miss the bigger points of these...there were only 3200ish turbo cobalt coupes even produced for the us market with a few hundred more made for Canada, they are very rare! the design is largely based on the Saturn Ion Redline and the turbo ecotec is actually from Opel, a european GM partner. Also the dealership offered a GM Stage 1 engine upgrade that basically tuned it to get 290 HP and 340 Lbs Tq UNDER WARRANTY!! the tune also allowed the computer to sense bolt ons and auto configure itself (not recommended). The car represents the end of an era as well, the last of the tuners without a bunch of screens, a car you can tune and work on yourself. The parts for these are cheap and the engine is very dependable plus it handles like a surgical blade. Stock it came with alcanterra trim on the seats, 18" forged aluminum rims and a very good pioneer sound system that still sounds great today. This was the first vehicle under 60K with Launch Control and it has no-lift-shift!! I look at the Cobalt as a Mini-Vette, it has many design cues from corvettes like the signature round tail-lights (which also remind the tuner fans of a R-32 Skyline) and the split 5 spoke rims that were also specific to corvettes of the time, and most notably this vehicle was from the "GM Perfomance Division" which I think was shut down in 2010(?) regardless, this is the division of GM that was responsible for all corvette development, so basically I see a 4-cylinder turbocharged vette, which sounds ridiculous but look at what camaros and mustangs have today...an option for the turbo-4. The SRT-4 and the Cobalt SS were both at the beginning and the end of an era for tuners and I think these were grossly under-rated especially considering my fully loaded '08 SS TC originally sold for under $24k. Imagine if the new Civic Type-R was only about $28K today with every option...thats what a Cobalt SS was.
@@makeaway4554 If you have an '07 sorry to tell you but those were not offered with forced induction, they have some body cues of the other years but the supercharged was only 05-06 and the turbo was 08-10. I believe you have the SS sport, which will never gain value. 2.4 liter though so its a bigger 4 cyl than some. Did you add a supercharger? Or did you just buy this and the guy told you it was supercharged?
@@makeaway4554 Just looked it up and I'm mistaken, They did make supercharged '07s. Fix it, keep it. the instant torque on the supercharged is great, Ive been able to do 60mph burnouts with a GM stage 2 kit. I think it was a tune, bigger injectors and a smaller pully setup....cant remember but i think intercooler was changed too or maybe added. Slap a nice borla exhaust on that bitch, cause otherwise that car is quiet as a mouse.
The cobalt ss was the best car i ever owned. I put 360,000 kilomiters on it in 3 years while beating it to shit and it only died after i whent something like 24,000 kiolmiters without an oil change and rear ended someone.
This to me will always be a cool car, thanks to it's usage as a Starter Car in 2005's Need for Speed Most Wanted and a free drag car in Need for Speed ProStreet
I had a black 2006 in 06 supercharged. headerback exhaust, tuned, full intake, bigger injectors, smaller pulley, act stage 2 clutch. And was one of my fastest builds ive had. Wish i could have raced it against my legacy. Probably my all time favorite car i owned. Never tried the turbo one!
I got my 05 lsj for under $3000 needing only clear coat repair. 150xxx. After 60lb injectors, 2.7 pully, zzp tuned ecu, dual pass emd plate, cams and head&blower port work and a high end clutch she is 300ish on 15 psi. The Goal with these lsj cars ain’t high boost it’s high flow with the Eaton running optimum. 300 in a 2.0 is nothing to bat an eye at. Keeps these legends being built
Ion Redline, Cobalt SS/SC, HHR SS, Cobalt SS/TC, Pontiac Solstice GXP, and Saturn Sky Redline are very underrated. I had a Ion Redline, and now own a HHR SS. I love the platform and am glad alot of ppl sleep on it but parts are getting harder to come by due to GM discontinuing them. I appreciate ZZP, OTTP, Hahn Racecraft, etc. for continuing to support our platform. 🙌🙏
@@Lui5_torre5 I bet lol, they are sick looking. I have a 06 ss, I have almost all of the suspension parts I need, just waiting for one rear bilstein B8 shock and the through socket for the strut mounts. Who knows when those will come in, its been a month already lol.
@@hitmixhyepock9405 anything's better than stock for performance 😂 I've been on KYBs and lowering springs, finally gave out on me so I'm prob gonna go for some BCs
Bought a brand new 09 off someone that totaled it in 09, 12 years shes' been at 500whp with very few issues. 180k on the clock now and still my daily champ. Love this car!
This was a childhood car that my dad had. It was the 2006 supercharged model. I wish we still had that car, been trying to find another one but they're really hard to find.
Glad I bought mine early this year. Picked up a SC with 190k miles for $2,600. Unfortunately though the timing chain guides went despite having a full timing job done at 176k. There are 2 versions of the cloyes timing kit. One made in china and one made in the USA. Unfortunately mine probably got the one made in China. Normally when my cars break I sell them right then and there. This one I haven't. I've been holding out to buy an engine but no one bought them on the west coast, however just recently I found out the Saab 9-3 has the same block so I'm gonna grab one of those and buy a used head and hopefully it'll be running again. It's by far the fastest car I've owned. It's sooo much fun pulling on Civics, BRZ's, and Focus/Fiesta ST's.
I’m so mad at how rare this car is now (especially in Georgia). I had the LS before I got into a accident. Been trying to find the SS but there’s only one online and it’s a NA version. But I think I might still get it and just tune it and add bolt ons
*Speeds & pushes the car* damn why is my car feeling different. Slight fixes to gaskets & early fluid & spark plug changes will keep your lovely cobalt peak. My little blue is a mild sport coupe but I'm happy I get to fix it up & choose if I want to turbo or super charge it.
I have a 2010. And had on 07 before. I also have a pontiac g5 gt. Love these cars and im glad its rare. Nobody has what ive got around me. Im at about 330 hp
I have the rare 09 turbo sedan cobalt ss, and man it’s a fun little car, 2900 Ibs full bolt ons and around 300whp / 340wtq it’s hard to get gapped😂 and that’s on a safe tune since I’m still on stock clutch for a bit longer
Yup the same with me. I have a 2007 Pontiac G5 gt sedan. Rare as well since the gt sedan was a Canada exclusive. I'm currently restoring the car. I've already done full suspension mods and I'll be installing a ported M62 supercharger next spring. Hoping for about 240 to 250 whp. Since the Pontiac G5 never came with the M62 or Lnf k04 turbo my goal was to build a sleeper.
That's true u don't see many Colbalts SS models out on the road or a cruisein these days . Me I have a HHR SS panel with the LHF turbo four that I've owned for 14 years. It's a automatic sorry 5 speed lovers. It's been a great car through the years. One of just 216 panels built for '09. One of just 9 in Aqua Blue Mettalic. Only mods were Magnaflow catback exhaust and switched over to EBC drilled/slotted rotors. I here alot of comments from spectators saying they didn't know Chevy even offered a Panel SS back then.
i have an 06 SS i turbo swapped on my channel and with just a turbo kit and e85 you can make over 400whp on a stock engine and transmission i love the platform!
Car & Driver's Lightning Lap times are as informative as they are hilarious. Lagging behind the '08 Cobalt SS are some pretty notable cars, like the '06 and '08 Lancer Evo MR, the '08 S2000 CR, the '07 Solstice GXP (how?), '08 Lotus Elise SC, and the apparent hothatch benchmark, the '14 Fiesta ST (itself only 1 place and 2/10ths ahead of the Supercharged Cobalt)
Yes the ecotec engine is great platform to build because of a few reasons. 1. Parts are cheap either new , used , or aftermarket. 2. Since the ecotec engine came in multiple cars finding say a Chevy cobalt, Pontiac g5, or a Saturn Ion for a cheap price is extremely easy. 3 . These engines are easily modded along with a ton of oem parts being interchangeable. So for example you can buy say a regular 2.2 or 2.4 Cobalt and take the M62 supercharger from the SS model and swap it on to the 2.2 or 2.4 N/A models or do the same with to the G5 or N/A Saturn Ion and even the HHR lol. Basically the possibilities with the ecotec platform if you do the research is endless. Honda Civic's started out the same wzy ib the early 90s once people realized you could swap different Honda engines into the EkG Honda Civic.
@@eshical7311 2005-2007 came supercharged. 2008-2010 came turbocharged. The 4 door sedan turbo was only available for one year, 2009, and less than 500 were made.
@@paintballindirtbiker Or i could do an engine swap with the engine from the coupe and the body of the sedan, because i really prefer the looks of the sedan to the coupe. Either that or i can just buy an NA and turbo it i guess
@@eshical7311 putting an lnf turbo engine into a non SS sedan is not as simple as just swapping the motor, I would do some research on that. It would be easier to turbo the existing 2.2 sedan motor.
The first and second gen ecotech engines are honestly the half bank of a corporate ls engine may not share some similarities but in performance truth we’re just about there
@@P71ScrewHead not really just researched with my brother for a while until we found the car…lol I have a 4th gen prelude too am I lucky I have that? No I’m not I just research
Dude, the red Cobalt SS Turbo images you borrowed from the Street Side Classics RU-vid channel ... is MY Cobalt SS Turbo, literally. I bought it from them last year and it's fantastic! Hilarious to all of a sudden run into your own car on RU-vid!
Like he said, there were only a few cases. Yet the LSJ has wiring, rusting fuel line & a multitude of other issues. I own both. A heavily modified, meth injected 07 LSJ & an LHU swapped 09 SS with 25 psi of boost.
I recently bought one and everything hes saying is right. Mine is a sc from 2006 making 270 to the wheels with just bolt ons and a tune on 93 pump gas. However... BE CAREFUL BUYING THESE. I bought one with 175k and it qas beat to hell. Its been in and out of the shop (currently in, diff literally blew to pieces). Make sure maintenance has been done and the previous owner put the right mods. The sc variant DID NOT come with the lsd, so you'll need to start there. I'm payed the price, don't make my mistake. But, that being said... I'm gonna fork over the money to get it fixed because holy shit its the fastest car I've ever owned. Its an awesome car and the interior is great. Yes, chevy plastics, whatever. But the seats are beautiful and the ss floor mats are a nice touch. Just do tour research folks!
SC Models did come with LSD.. It is called the G85 package and on the redline it's called the Comp Package. Usually can be noticed by the Recaro seats if it has it without checking under the trunk for the engine code.
People complain about the Cobalts before 2008, need to realize that issues come with any car with time. I had a 1984 Pontiac Sunbird coupe in the early 1990s, and I only had to replace the timing belt once. I look forward to buying a 2006 or 2007 Cobalt LT or SS. People will have more problems with base models when you spend less money. You get what you pay for. I owned other cars, but I love Chevys.
I just got one not to long ago allways wanted one ended up with the base 2.2 auto sedan but I'm a find a ss parts car with manual hopefully I can but it feels impossible to find
you mentioned the nurburgring record a couple times; Unfortunately you neglected to mention that the record held by the Cobalt SS(TC) was held for TEN years; Let me repeat this; The Cobalt held that Nurburgring record for TEN years! It took ten years of development, and more horsepower for the Civic R to break the record, held by this rather unassuming (unless it had the big spoiler) Chevy.
