One thing that I don't like about Kirby Star Allies is the dificulty, it's waaay easy, but the game is litterally like a love letter to the series, I love that, the story telling and music is so good, the fact that they came back to tell story about the greatest foe of kirby made me feel like a kid, not for "oh I know that character" but more about the story. I still considere Kirby that game that is to tell a story, a story of a pink ball trying to solve everything threw the darkness, feels good!

Hearing someone talk about star allies coming from a genuine place of love for the series was so refreshing to see. It's a game that has some of my favorite story moments and side content in the series, and while a lot of the main campaign is a slog I'll never get tired of just enjoying an old fashioned Kirby game. Here's hoping forgotten land can be the best it can be. Really hoping for some cool story stuff now that it's their first trek into proper 3D. I personally like how the story isn’t presented to you outright in Star Allies. It shows Kirby really doesn’t care about any of the lore within his own game, he just wants to the get rid of the bad people doing bad things without really thinking too much on their motivations and stuff like that. It also makes it a little bit more obvious that Kirby doesn’t know any of that stuff, only the player get to know the pause screen stuff. It also prevents the action from getting diluted by explanatory dialogue, even if that is in vain since the action is instead stopped by those information dumps.
@alexanderadams9058

The best part of the Kirby franchise to me is (well it's a lot of things, the music, the gameplay, the aesthetic, the characters, etc) the lore, and the choice of if you want to dig for it and listen to tragedies, misfortunes, and the origin of life in Kirby's world......or if you just want to have a fun and good time saving the world with good ol Kirby. This choice tells us that "yeah this world is messed up, depressing, and sometimes hopeless...but if you have the right outlook, have friends by your side, and follow your heart, then happiness can be found anywhere, even in the darkest of places." Kirby doesn't see his life as a series of unfortunate events nor does he see his world as dark and mysterious. He sees the good in everything and just wants to keep the peace in any way he can. The world doesn't have to be as dark as it seems, if we just fight for good and do the right things then our lives can be just as meaningful as any other's. (Note : I've been awake for 14 hours and wrote this at 12 am. If this makes absolutely no sense....you know why. Bye and thanks for listening to my drunken rambles / Ted Talk)

This is a very good video on the basis of how it compares Star Allies' flaws to Forgotten Land's attempts to address them. Because-- yeah, I agree, SA had issues and FL is taking great lengths to go out of its way to correct them. But ultimately, this video has one massive, *glaring* flaw: it repeatedly assumes all of "modern Kirby" is like Star Allies just because it's the most recent game, when that could not be further from the truth. Return to Dream Land, Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot - those are all games that are considered part of the Kumazaki era of Kirby, and the more I watch of this video the more obvious it becomes you have not played them. This is not only obvious in the fact that you do not use any music or footage from these games, but also in your argument. Many of these criticisms of Star Allies' lack of depth in its level design, overall flow and gimmicks simply do not apply to the previous three games, and you're out here acting like Star Allies represents all of "modern Kirby." Don't get me wrong - I appreciate the efforts to shine a light on all the things Star Allies does right, and I agree it's a game with a lot of merit behind its flaws, but it's unfair to treat it like proof of a series decline when it's more like a black sheep in a series of incredible modern games. You've made some great analysis videos in the past but surely you can stand to be a little more well-researched than this.

I think this comment shows why Star Allies is not a great game for newcomers to the series-it’s a fine enough game on its own, but there are much better entries in the series with a similar style that serve as better first impressions. As others have pointed out, if you’re a die-hard Kirby fan, then you probably love all the Dream Friends and their Smash Bros.-like movesets, all the music remixes and callbacks, and the new lore revelations that turn the series on its head. But if you aren’t a die-hard Kirby fan, then Star Allies offers very little for you that other Kirby games haven’t already done much better.

My only problem with Kumazaki is that the guy makes great polished Kirby games but his games are still so similar to each other and he doesn't evolve core Kirby much. He does a RTDL style game but with a new gimmick or another sequel to a sub game. I'm a big fan of his work and bought Planet Robobot two times but Forgotten Land (If he's directing it) will be his boldest move yet finally in the franchise. Which if that's the case will be his most impressive entry yet imo.

I don’t get why someone would hate pause screen lore. It works fine for what it needs to do and also adding a lot to the lore basically while not being too intrusive really to gameplay. 16:40 I thought Star Allies world themes were meant to represent styles from past games; - World 1 is styled off Dreamland 1 (venturing through Dreamland to stop Dedede from stealing food and even getting some gag credits after beating him). - World 2 is styled from Return to Dreamland's world map (most levels having a corresponding match with RtD's first 5 worlds, with SA only replacing the desert world with a lava level). - World 3 is styled from Super Star's Revenge of MetaKnight (getting abroad and fighting through an enemy ship with multiple bosses and dialogue between them along the way, ending with an escape sequence from the falling apart vessel). - World 4 is a copy of Super Star's Milky Way Wishes (levels based on earlier themes that have been somewhat altered in colour or background, can be done in any level order with each level ending in a boss fight, and both even have their underground levels be a mini-boss rush). Since SA is a celebration game, it makes sense to base the worlds off past Kirby games rather than an overall theme. It also has the side effect of the game escalating after each world, which could almost be reflective of how much Kirby has escalated in scale as the series has continued, going from stopping Dedede from stealing food to fighting a cult's god of destruction at the edge of space.

What makes star allies special for me was that it was a love letter not just to ALL the series but also the fans, there's no other game where you can see all the characters you loved come together and play with them, it's like seeing all the toys you loved as a child come together to have a good time with you. And not just that, Star allies gave us A LOT of lore, something that nobody cares except the fans. We got that secret last level with the Gameboy theme, hell, we even got a classic Kirby skin as a 100% reward, and don't forget about the puzzle pictures, that are a full celebration of all the series. But why this celebration?... Because Star allies was the end of something. We just have to look at the last puzzle picture, "A farewell to Kirby"... Star allies marks the end of this 2D era, we might never get a new 2D Kirby game, and that's why star allies is a love letter, the golden statue of Kirby says it, " We ❤ Kirby ". Thank you Star allies. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I believe that forgotten will mark a bright future for our pink puffball.

Interesting video. I kinda share some of your positive and negative thoughts on Star Allies. However, there is a unique thought I have on the game. I believe Star Allies is the perfect (temporary) finale to the 2D era of Kirby. This game is the ultimate celebration when it comes the Kirby's entire history: - Soo much remade music - The character scenarios on the menu screen -Beloved characters coming back as playable characters - The lore implications on who Kirby is - The "Farewell to Kirby" picture you unlock. Everything about it just screams "finale". While I wish the game could have been better, I'm happy Star Allies was able to give the 2D era a proper (temporary) sendoff.

This was an interesting video to watch. I agree with most of the Star Allies criticism here (lore-execution, level design, busy boss battles), but was also surprised by some of it as well. I find the copy ability movesets to be highly intuitive and fun to use in the side-scrollers (though that’s just my opinion), and while I think that the 3D gameplay allows us to do some cool new things with copy abilities, some of the “tech” you mentioned in Forgotten Land (like the sword combo) comes straight from the sidescrollers. And while I’m glad that Forgotten Land is moving away from pause screen lore and instead giving its lore through the capsules and (potentially) more direct storytelling, I don’t think most of Star Allies storytelling was bad by any means. Also, I could just be totally wrong here, but I don’t see anyone refer to Star Allies’ subgames as “fan favorites,” in comparison to stuff like Kirby Fighters or Scope Shot. Also, I don’t know if you played the other sidescrollers in the “Return”/Modern era, but Star Allies, despite being intended as a celebration of the series, is not a good representative of the modern era in terms of quality at all. Return to Dream Land, Triple Deluxe, and Planet Robobot are much better games on nearly all fronts. Imho Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot in particular are peak 2D Kirby in terms of level design, mechanics, game feel, side content, and overall personality; the difference between the 3DS entries and Star Allies is like night and day (although I may be biased due to my nostalgia for them). In any case it was great to hear your thoughts on Star Allies and the series as a whole, and to hear someone talk about Kirby so passionately at the end.

I appreciate the video for what it is, but I think it's fundamentally flawed. Hard to talk about Star Allies as a representative of modern Kirby when it's really an anniversary or celebration of kirby history. Ignoring the other 3 modern kirby games makes the video seem a little uninformered. Another thing would be praising Forgotten Lands for things that already existed. The "combo tech" in Forgotten Land has always existed since Return to Dreamland. You just have to sit down and learn it. Finally, I think the pause screen lore drops are incredibly effective in the games. It's a series staple and can often enhance the boss fight it's found in. Learning about the boss you're fighting while in the fight can help add atmosphere or tension for those who read it, especially when there are messages of encouragement to you. It falls slightly flatter when getting it in a capsule machine after everything is already done. Still, it is a very well made video and it's easy to see the passion put into it. Keep making what you're making and enjoying the series.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to skip out on this video for now. I'm planning on going into Forgotten Land knowing as little as possible. But I guess I might as well add to the conversation by leaving my thoughts on Star Allies. Star Allies is flawed, but I still really like it. For reasons aside from the fact that I like every Kirby game. But starting with the flaws, the biggest I think is the level design. Because they wanted this game to be multiplayer, they decided to make the levels a lot more open and simpler, in contrast to the more tightly designed levels of Return to Dreamland, which caused a lot of chaos in multiplayer. But to this day, Return to Dreamland is still my first choice for multiplayer Kirby. Why? Because this had the side effect of making the levels REALLY BORING. Previous games like Planet Robobot had excellent level design that allowed Kirby to use his abilities to solve puzzles in interesting ways, but most of the puzzles in Star Allies felt like simple gates to make sure you have the right ability. Additionally, the pacing of this game is awful. You have one world that's mostly grassland, then you have a world in which every level looks completely different, setting a high expectation for level variety in the future. But the next world's levels all look the same, and it's the longest world at this point. Here, the pace comes screeching to a halt. But as for why I like Star Allies, there's quite a few reasons why. And I understand that these elements aren't enough to redeem the game in most people's eyes, but they do for me at least. The first is the soundtrack. Honestly, for me a good soundtrack immediately elevates a mediocre game to a good one. Star Allies' soundtrack is wonderful, my second favorite in the series (Robobot being my first). I highly recommend anyone check it out. They game also looks fantastic, even if the environments are far from the series' most unique, being bested by both of the previous mainline games. Now, I've got to be honest, I've always enjoyed the ways in which the Kirby series has presented its story. Placing much of it in the pause screens and in separate modes makes it feel like I'm uncovering something, and Star Allies probably has the most revelations about the series' lore out of any Kirby game, and I find that stuff pretty interesting. But I understand that this is only going to appeal to die-hard fans of the series. And speaking of, I guess I'm going to dip back into to speaking about flaws again, because this game to me has the same problem as Kingdom Hearts 3: you're only going to get a lot out of it if you're a committed fan of the series. Star Allies is clearly a game that goes out of its way to give the fandom a lot of fanservice. HAL even stated that they wanted this game to feel like the end of an era for Kirby, with the next game going in a new direction. From the playable characters from throughout the series history, the revelations in the lore, and all of the musical references, this is clearly a game made for fans. And hell, I'll admit that it works on me. But if you're not already obsessed with the series, what does that leave you with? A game that's... okay, but had a pretty fun finale? One that leaves pretty good impressions at the end, but is otherwise forgettable? That's the real problem with Star Allies in my mind. So, at the end of the day, Star Allies leaves me mixed. While my personal feelings on the game are almost all positive, in an objective light I understand that it's very flawed. But it still does hurt a little bit to see it pretty widely disliked.

The example at 13:31 doesn’t seem that fair. You’re showing footage from a place where you find a fork in the road, and where you unlock a new feature: The Dream Palace. In any other place, it’s fairly quick. Also, it’s pretty bold to claim Forgotten Land is masterful when, at the time of this video’s release, it wasn’t even out yet. You’re singing praises for something that didn’t even exist yet. Also also, the comparison of everything to Souls games was weird. The prelude to Gorimondo was cool, but that’s something many games do, and the idea of learning more about a boss until you finally beat it is standard across not just most Kirby games, but most video games overall. And as a final note, the wild contrast between levels is due to Kirby Star Allies’ main focus. This game isn’t trying to be an amazing next step for the series, it’s trying to be a fanservice-filled last hurrah for fans of Kirby’s long history. The contrast in levels shows this. At one point, you’re traveling across the different sides of Popstar like in Kirby’s Dream Land 3, and going to all the different locales it has. In another point you’re going from planet to planet like in Milky Way Wishes, and you’re seeing all the different planets there. Those scenarios are justified reasons to show off different level themes. The game changes things up when it can, but if the themes need to stay the same like in Dream Land and Jambastion, it makes them stay the same.

Fun fact: Triple Deluxe was the first Modern Kirby game to be heavily criticized when it came out: the criticisms were that it did not innovate in anything compared to Return to Dreamland and it felt insipid (since it is only a copy and paste of Return to Dreamland) In fact: a lot of people credit the difficulty of Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot when, in reality, they are just as easy as Return to Dreamland and Star Allies. The reason: Star Spit. Star Spit actually ends up being a more useful tool than a lot of Copy Abilities (that's thanks to bosses dropping a lot of Stars to use Star Spit: enough to take 1/3 of their health)

Design in guidance is nicely done with your new best friend Elfin being there at the start to help you out and like... Plot spoilers I guess, just being removed for a while later on, which is also cool as a little thing of setting tone and removing that bit of tutorial when unnecessary, and you get him back later and he's a little friend it's lovely. Only complaint is that every single time you get an ability scroll the upgrade shop tells you about it, I understand with the new buildings, but that's a bit much, especially when you're wanting to go in as soon as you get one.

It's so interesting watching this as a new hard-core kirby fan, but also an untraditional one. I played super star ultra on my ds, and 64 as a kid, but I wasn't a kirby fan. They were just fun games. I never had played anything else other than air ride (I LOVE AIR RIDE). But mid 2021, I started slowly consuming more and more kirby content on youtube,, and started becoming really fascinated with the lore and world of kirby. Then one day I bought kirby star allies off the eshop. I had played and already disliked it in 2018, but I wanted to try again (whole 60$ later 😒). But this time playing it was different. I went in knowing exactly what I was going to get, and I was ok with it, because what I got was an amazing homage to every kirby game, and I know I really started backwards but I still had so much fun. From there I got triple deluxe, planet robobot, and I beat dreamland 3 on switch online. Then I beat mass attack, and battle Royale. Its been a non stop journey, but I've loved going back and seeing where all these characters started. I'm not trying to give my life story, but I loved the video, and completely agree with you, but I don't feel like there's many people who started their mainline series of kirby with star allies, but when I did it, every game only got better and I had nothing to compare star allies to (other than 64 and ssu but like I said I played them as a kid)

Cool video, genuienly in the end made me appreciate Star Allies. ...But it felt weird how you undermined the first Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, 1 and 3 being considered some of the best in the series. Return to Dreamland basically revived Kirby in a sense, as it felt like a rebirth of the series. The environment was gorgeous, The Abilities had multiple pages of attacks all of a sudden and the gameplay was smooth as butter. With there being creative challenge stages, puzzles, and amazing side modes, it somehow managed to perfect the formula form the beginning. Triple Deluxe felt more simple but weirldy experimental, trying out 3D layers for the gameplay, but it mainly was sort of the foundation for the Next game, that being Planet Robobot. It turned the aesthetic and expectations of the last 2 games on it's head, suddenly the world is being twisted, exploited and robotocised, leading to absolutely stunning level designs, world ideas and new gameplay elements, with the cherry on top of this game being it's lore which is absolute perfection.

Star Allies definitely has it's flaws, biggest one is difficulty. But the fact none of the previous modern games were mentioned gave me major red flags throughout the video. I've played Return to Dream Land, Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot and compared to Star Allies it felt more satisfying to 100% those games than it did to 100% Star Allies because it took them five updates to give us the full experience. Sure the extra content via the Dream Friends and Heroes in Another Dimension were fun to play through, but the former didn't feel to satisfying and the latter just confused the ever living daylights thanks to the localizers dumbing things down to an embarrassing degree. The pause screen lore tons of Kirby fans like to praise is a double edged sword. It's common knowledge that almost all of the pause screen descriptions are *heavily* butchered in Star Allies. Some of the translations remove the obvious religious references but other parts *straight up remove key pieces of information.* Like in one segment of the Soul Melter EX fight Against Void/Void Termina where it says this: "Dream, Dark, Soul, Heart... All chaos and possibilities gather in the substance, and it is born as the progenitor of origination." Which is *completely missing* in the English localized version. Susie's pause screen description also has her state that she's following the corrupt ways of her father and Star Dream when in the Japanese version she's merely going around providing happiness and support via science to others and eliminating the "savages" which could possibly mean evildoers and criminals. There's also a major case of censorship with Zan Partizanne's pause description for her EX fight in Soul Melter EX where the Japanese pause description gives the implication of her wanting to commit suicide after she lost everything while the English localized version removes and ignores it completely. Previous Kirby games had either translation error like with Shadow Dedede's pause description or straight up changed context like when when in Area 7 "Mind controlled by a Program (JP)/MInd in the Program (Localized)" where the Japanese dialog has Susie say she wanted to have Haltmann come to his senses while the localized version just has her state she wanted to teach Haltmann a lesson. After getting the context from Meta Knightmare Returns' pause descriptions for both Susie 2.0 and President Haltmann 2.0 and piecing even more of it together with the Japanese dialog and pause descriptions and you can easily interpret what Susie says in the Japanese version as her wanting her old man to wake up with tears in his eyes. Out of all the Kirby games I'd say Kirby Star Allies is the game in the series where HAL went one step forward and then several steps back by making the game laughably easy and even shortening the Guest Star levels for some abilities/Dream Friends making an already easy game even easier. Then they gave us Heroes in Another Dimension and did a long jump to make us think they knew what they were doing from the start with harder bosses, more challenging level design, and more thought provoking puzzles other than "do this thing and then head straight to the main objective" with obvious as hell hand holding although there are a few sections where they do give hints for some puzzles.

After watching this yesterday and ruminating, I feel like this video's title is disingenuous. I found this video and quickly watched the first two in the series and enjoyed them, but I think this video is a drop off as it doesn't even tell the whole tale of modern Kirby, I wouldn't think of this as an issue if the video was presented as just a look at Star Allies and Forgotten Land, but throughout the video it tries to appear as an overarching look at "Modern Kirby" while in reality it is only looking a small section of the whole. I got caught on the 30v60 fps bit, because of course someone would. Listen, I'm not happy with my brain for running with the topic either, but here we are I guess. 60 fps offers so little variety for weighted animation that I genuinely don't fully understand the demand for it. To harp on an age old point, but movies and cartoons are only 24. Or worse, 12fps. Fuck, some cartoons animate on 3s and are only 8fps. Lower frame rates are often used to add weight to the animation and I really don't think most games benefit from it. To use Kirby as an example, The Rainbow curse looks fucking amazing stylistically because the characters and environments are actually running in two different frame rates and the effect is amazing. Which I guess leads me to the point made in the video; fps is fine if it's a stylistic choice. But it's always about style. A lower frame rate is never NOT about style. I've never once heard an animator or artist bitch about frame rate because they actually understand the application and effect of frame rate. This has been a very loose understanding/perspective of the topic I'm interested in.
