The key to this watch is that it's not modern...just like the original. Perfect just the way it is. And in the $500 range for a Swiss watch...you've got to be kidding. You put this Steinhart on my radar. Great presentation and production.
The 5517 milsub had fixed lugs so couldn't be worn on a bracelet, maybe a Bonklip. I have a 42mm V3 which is always on a NATO or MN style strap. I don't have a problem with homages if the watch in question is out of production & way out of reach financially, hence my OVM & Smiths Everest, watches you can wear without worry, unlike a 5517 or a 1016.
Totally agree with your take! Granted there are some terrible homages out there as well, but this Steinhart OVM is an outstanding watch, especially in this 39mm case. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Have owned this one for a couple of years, and though I paid a lot more for other watches, this is one of my favorites. A neighborhood jeweler, looking at it from maybe 15 feet away, actually thought it was a MilSub so that's how close the design comes. Lots of companies charge more for less. So what if it's homage? It's an excellent watch at a great price.
Completely agree. I have no problem with homages of watches that are no longer being produced, especially as the real thing is prohibitive price-wise for the average consumer
Yeah, they really did get the overall look of the original down pat, along with some excellent build quality for the price. This is the kind of homage I can get behind!
Love, LOVE Steinhart watches. I own an OLKO Special Edition Ocean GMT - an homage to the original Rolex Explorer II (1655) which I owned back in the late 70s and sold when the prices got just plain stupid ($25,000 to $30,00!!!) Honestly, the Steinhart is a BETTER watch than the 70s era Rolex. I love it. Every time I glance at my wrist, it's 1978 again. 🤣 The build quality is spectacular. Now I have to decide whether I want this OVM or their standard Ocean 1. I'm truly a Steinhart fan boy.
The argument that homages lack creativity is valid; on the other hand, the watches they usually pay homage to are unusable as daily wearers. What good is a vintage Milsub if I can't wear it every day and use it while I cut the grass or binge watch xvideos? Technically I could, but do I want to risk it? Homages exist as a solution to these problems.
I remeber when this watch released from steinhart i really wanted the traditional style Blade minutes hand and Mercedes hand, aswell as Lug holes would've been a quick buy for me.. but in terms of a homage watch the watch is still beautiful and a great option and price..
A very nice looking watch I do like the Oyster style bracelet, I have found the Oyster to be one of the most comfortable bracelet around. There are a lot of these retro styles popping up awaiting to get my hands on the Omega Seamaster 1957 trilogy ... Yes I know there is a slight price difference but its bot 100k for an original Rolex.
Hi Steven! The bracelet is done really well on these Steinharts - probably the most comfortable ones in my entire collection. From my research, the original Milsub is indeed running for over $100K. There's actually one available on Chrono24 if you're interested in picking one up! For me, the real deal will be out of reach for the foreseeable future, so for now, I'll enjoy my OVM 39. :)
I have two steinharts a ocean 1 is a good watch the second one ocean 1 gmt is full of sharp edges i wont buy any more you take a chance whether you get a good one or not
Hey yeah sorry for the complete lack of updates. My favorite Steinhart is the Ocean 39 Premium GMT - just an outstanding watch for the price. I hope that once life calms down a bit I'll be able to complete my review of this one!
Just re-watched, still great video, too bad YT won't let me give a second thumbs up.👍Not for nothing but it almost sounds like you have the wrong watch. When you went through your negatives on this watch you mentioned lack of a date, applied markers and ceramic insert. All of these are features Stienhart chose to coincide with how true to the MilSub they wanted there homage to be. I know you mentioned you were only knitpicking and you do really like the piece the way it is, (me too, I bought 2 of them, both the grey and black dial version) but there are other Stienys in their catalog that have all those features you would have preferred.
Thanks Arthur for the kind praise! Yes, I know they were going for the authentic Milsub experience, so I completely understand why they didn't add these other features. Having said that, it's still a great piece! I have other Steinharts that do indeed include these other features, but this watch still gets quite a bit of wrist time. :)
I'm sure it's well put together, but I don't get the whole homage thing, there are plenty of non homage watches to choose, surely it would just remind you that it isn't the real deal every time you look at it.
Hi David! Personally it doesn't really bother me all that much, as I know that there's no way I'll shell out $100K for the real deal. The Milsub is basically unobtainium at this point, so having a well made piece that gives me the same look (with some notable improvements) puts a smile on my face. At the end of the day, it's about your own personal enjoyment. If you don't like homages, then like you said, there are plenty of watches out there. :)
@Yusuf Best I'v sold mine a while ago. Dam I regret it!! 😞There is still a few Vids of this watch on youtube. Still got a few wristshot pics. Not sure how to share it on RU-vid
This video seems more like sponsored content because there is absolutely nothing special about "winding a Steinhart". It's a basic no frills Sellita movement and a basic crown/stem design with no extra effort put in. If you get one that is smooth to wind then it's pure luck. Really cringe content.
I think in terms of my own personal experience, the Steinharts wind pretty smoothly. None of my own watches are over the $1K mark, so I don't doubt there are smoother options out there. Maybe one day I can try something better, but it's all about one's frame of reference. If Steinhart is handing out sponsorships, please let me know!
