Modern or Vintage Pokemon Cards - Which one to Collect/Invest? 

Vintage cards will always increase in value overtime. There are many people who are now in the workforce in their 30's who are starting to get disposable income. This generation remembers the vintage era and the height of pokemon during the first few generations. (Before E-Reader, before Black/White)

great vid! What kind of tips do you have for purchasing high value cards to avoid getting scammed?

I don't like to think of myself as an investor, I'm a pure collector at heart. I'll admit though, with the community leaning so invesment heavy, it has certainly changed my perception and some of my decision making. I was inspired to add more modern sealed to my collection than I otherwise would have, but I look at it more as a cost "avoidance" than an investment. Anything I'm purchasing now, I plan on holding for 20+ years. The products I purchased are of sets I'd enjoy having in my collection, regardless of what price they are in the future. But I bought them now to be safe, knowing there's a chance they could be way out of my price range at some point in the future. But after collecting enough sealed that I was satisfied with, I realized my heart is definitly with collecting the cards more - so that is where my money will usually be focused. And as a circumstance of how expensive some of the cards are that I'm trying to collect, I can't put as much into modern sealed going forward as I'd like to. If I was investing heavier into modern though, personally I would stick with booster boxes for main sets, and ETB/UPC/bundles of special sets. I think it's safer than trying to predict which specific cards people are going to like the most in the future. It will definitely be interesting to see if the demand can keep up with the rising POP reports years from now, when we've had more sets after this era to compare and compete and spread the wealth. Like you mentioned in the video, it's impossible to know for sure whether this era of cards will stick out to people 20 years from now as a great era, or just another mid-era set that blends in with the rest. The "next hot thing" needs to come out, to really test how these sets will hold up. In terms of the timeframe of sealed modern, my outlook is at least 15 years, because that's when today's generation of kids who grew up with these cards, will likely have nostalgia for their childhood and have some desposable income. The one part of my vintage collection that I'm hopeful could have "investment" potential years from now is my Umbreons. If there's any chance Umbreon becomes "the new Charizard" to the kids who grew up with SWSH, maybe when they are our age, they will want to collect all of the big Umbreon cards. The main thing that worries me when it comes to the cards specifically is the difference jn the generations they released too. Yes in the 90s we had the game boy games first and then the tcg follwed but it was its own comoletely different phenomenon. The gamebiy games introduced us to the cards but they both held their own. Today kids know the games first and foremost and most have no interest in playibg the card version. Yes playibg tcg tournaments is still huge but i feel a lot of them are still old enough that the originals played a role in their desire to do so today. Im aware kids still buy the vards and even compete jn tournaments but its nothing like we did in 99 or the early 2000s. This is what makes me hesitent to invest in the cards (newer era cards) i have a feeling that the main collectors of them will still be our older generation not the generation they released to. I just feel like that demand will not be there as it is today. They dont care as much about the cards they care about the switch games and pokemon go and all because bith were not as equally popular to them.

I don't collect vintage cards. I have good and bad memories about them. The bad, all my cards were stolen back in the day. Collection at least worth around 100k+ today. Something I won't sell. So now, I collect newer set or card I never had before.
