Modern gliders (sailplanes) are not just beautiful to the eye, pack some amazing technology both in airfoil and materials engineering, but they also have some incredible state of the art instruments to help aid the pilot in flying many hundreds of miles per flight. I've been asked a lot by viewers of some of my other gliding videos to do an in depth cockpit instrument explanation. Well....you asked for it. Since Gold Rush is now off for the summer break, I guess you have the 30 minutes to watch a video about all of my glider instruments. Haha. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy - Bruno - B4

This is BY FAR the best channel for glider/sailplane content. Informative and entertaining. You never "over narrate", never assume your viewers know everything, nor fill the peaceful quiet moments with obnoxious music. I don't understand why you don't have 100k subs. Thank you for the effort and content.

Thanks for the panel tour, Bruno! When I began flying years ago, my primary nav/Com had a crank handle for tuning the receiver part, and had only 4 com channels, each one controlled by an individual crystal! needless to say, there were remarkable changes going to be made with in flight electronics as the years pass! Your tour was most interesting as well as instructive. I may never use any of this, but it has been most entertaining for me! Thank you! Your friend and follower Phil Strahin.

Thank you so much for this particular video. I've been watching for a couple of years and besides answering some of the obvious questions that had lingered for me...you covered those AND MORE. I ride motorcycles in competitive scavenger hunts that have some similar aspects to your competitive glider events and as I was blowing by Nephi in August 2018 on one of my event...I recognized some of the nearby topographic features and smiling as I recognized the airport on the edge of town descending 132 from the west.

Bruno, you’re the man. Your talk of instruments was impressive and thanks for taking the time to record it. Keep your sport alive and safe. I live back east where hang gliders rule the skies but some glider ports (1) are near by. When you have time come and fly the Smokey Mountain range and the Appalachia Mountain Trail from Georgia to Maine.

Thank you very much Bruno! I've been watching your videos (and others) for a couple of years, and, every panel is a little different- so, your explanation of each instrument is very useful when watching. Of course, the outside views are typically stunning, watching the glider perform along ridge tops is great, and, you are always reminding the viewer of where you are in flight, how far your next waypoint is, as well as direction. I really appreciate your camera work, your verbal 'patter'- keeping us aware of issues at hand, distances to waypoints, obstacles to getting there, and, tools used to overcome things. I will admit that I wish gliders were less expensive, but, love the fact that we viewers can enjoy full flights with you. I hope you are pleasantly surprised at both the number of subscribers and number of views you get. Speeds attained, heights attained and the occasional loop is just a hoot- never gets dull! Thanks again!

@@BrunoVassel Boy, that's a generous offer, Bruno! Honestly, I'm afraid to take you up on it, cuz- my addictive personality will create yet another obsession for me! However, I am pretty deep down the rabbit hole at this point- struggling with lift vs. drag on an airfoil design (plan form) for a 2 seat (side by side) LSA aircraft, fully cantilevered, removable, 2 piece wing that incorporates all of the 'sexy' new things: VGs, winglets & flap lips. Although powered, I feel that a clean wing with air brakes and a reflex position at straight and level cruise, could be so efficient, not so terribly expensive to produce using some of the newer materials (Polypropylene sheet, closed cell foam, E-glass, honeycomb bonded aluminum, etc..) and LIMITED use of carbon fiber & Kevlar. No, I'm NOT an aerodynamicist, rocket scientist,, Ph.D. But, you, Elliot Seguin, that crazy kid who created and flew the foam bi-plane from his basement, the Paradox sport plane kid, the SEA-Avio Risen... Inspire me to want to raise the bar on small, single engine aircraft and low the cost of entry of flight. Flight for all is my dream. A glider flight with you would push me over the edge!

Festinating! We have similar instrumentation in sailboats. All the instruments communicate with each other through nmea2000 bus and are displayed on a chart plotter. Amazing technology in your instrumentation. Thank you very much for sharing this!

Hello. Only discovered you a few days ago and I love it. I took lessons in France in the 80's, loved it but needed to spend on other stuff so never got to do my solo! Only been up once since then, couple of years ago in Somerset U.K. Maybe I'll start again! I love panel the instruments you have. When I began of course there was no GPS which is a pain and we had the (spelling probably wrong) Mac Ready calculator which was absolutely brilliant. Maybe see you in Utah one day, those mountains are fantastic. Thanks for the ride.

Oh man..! I remember when I was a fledgling, trying to work my H201B South of Reno with a crumpled sectional on my lap, the HT radio underfoot somewhere, no GPS, no Transponder, and ATC asking where I thought I was... My flying days are mostly done, but working on a 'glass panel' for the boat. Thanks for the tour,..! Oh to be young again...

a little hard to hear at first but some earbuds aided until later when you're giving operational specs then it's nice and clear. Thanks for the tour. I'm gonna check the rest of your videos for control surfaces and any techniques. Cross-checking looks quite easy with a diamond pattern established in the panel. I like the aircraft identification system. As you said your scan can be good but having that extra is just that much safer for you and others. Thanks again.

Bruno, this was very helpful. Your selection of what data to display on your flight computer will help. There are only so many boxes you can display on an Oudie. Also the Flarm data on that large screen is ideal.

Great video again Bruno - Many Thnaks. I'm sure you will know that in a balanced turn, 'G' only relates to bank angle - it's independent of airspeed. Also a knot is 6000ft/hr so varios are calibrated in 100ft/min - which equates to knots too.

Bruno, this was great. I can seldom see your panel of instruments while you are in the air. Might there be some way to install an LED light to put more light on the panel? Looks as if you've invested a ton of money into your "toy". Happy for you. I'm sure it makes flying a lot more fun too have that much information at hand.

Cable ties holding the butterfly head unit. Its amazing how good a cable tie can be compared to screw fasteners. Cable tie will never loosen due to vibrations that may loosen a nut and bolt. Its cheaper, lighter and probably more reliable given the job its doing. Just replace some cable ties maybe once per year, or more.

The S7/V7 has tons of features that allow it to be used as a flight computer too. In your case these features are redundant as the Craggy does all that for you. In most of your videos the S7/V7 is all but invisible but I see it has a brightness control.

Have you done a video on the logistical/economic side of flying a glider? I've always wanted to fly and having just recently completed my engineering degree, I'm interested to learn what I need to do to make flying an actionable goal. Gliding looks to be the coolest flying you can do short of trying to get into the US Air Force pilot program. Paramotors also look like a easy entry in to the troposphere.

Wow As I've probably mentioned, I was almost creamed by an overtaking King Air going 3-4 times my speed, during my initial instruction. Jan yelled, "We almost died!". Heard the KA before I saw it.

Very nice.... 8 need to get rich again so I can afford all this Kool stuff.. Think I would be more of a analog fan and seat of the pants..... Hopefully by next year I can start some lessons.... Probably going for too build me an air chair because I love minimalist stuff plus I love the open air idea..... Most likely will build a GOAT GLIDER..... RIGHT NOW 8 have a few rc gliders and fly Cessna 150 to 182...

Nice panel... I bet it cost more than your first glider though! Even the relatively inexpensive LX8080 Simple I installed a few years back when I also installed FLARM cost a fair amount. So much nicer to fly with than the old Peschges VP-4E it replaced though - as it should be since the FLARM/vario/computer installation cost about a sixth the total market value of my old ASW-15B!

Very nice presentation Bruno! Love the big and beautiful Ultimate! You said the wind calculation of SYM is not so accurate, I wonder can't you feed the wind data of the Butterfly to the Ultimate! It's what I will do in my Mini. Wind data of the S80 will be used in LK8000 on my smartphone for more accurate final glide calculation.

Bruno, are you putting that Colnago through it's paces as well? Over here in ATL we have the Silver Comet Trail where I'm working on base miles after yet another period of infirmity. Looking forward to rejoining group rides with just a bit more condition. Re: the sailplane, you practice towline breaks at 200 + feet, but do you also practice parachuting with services that provide that training? And finally, have you produced a video of all the other components of the plane for us laymen fascinated by your sailing? (I'm fascinated by L/D but I've got to go do a search to see the meaning of it.) Great stuff. Rick Cheatham

Hi Bruno, I am old retired regional airline pilot and for a long time, I have been intrigued about gliders and learning to properly fly a sailplane. Please tell me, when flying a glider, do you not require a flight attitude indicator and a gyro compass, as well as the magnetic reliable unit? Would it not be much better to have the analogue instruments than the glass cockpit?

Franklin Arguedas - I’m not Bruno, but I do own and fly a sailplane. Gliders fly in VFR conditions and are not required to have a flight attitude indicator nor a directional gyro. (At least not in the United States.) A magnetic direction-indicator is generally required as far as I know, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be an old school whiskey compass. I have a basic aircraft compass in my glider, but I really don’t use it. In flying gliders, you’re turning frequently, so a traditional compass is never that accurate anyway. It’s possible that Bruno has an electronic compass included somewhere in his software to be compliant, but it sounds like he doesn’t use it. And as he mentioned, he doesn’t have the old school type of compass mounted anywhere, which is a good decision as far as I’m concerned. As for analog vs digital, my setup is for the most part analog, and I’m extremely envious of Bruno’s glass instrument panel (not to mention his great flying skills and experiences!). His setup is fantastic with all the key information you’d ever want and a nice big screen to give great situational awareness. And all of it is designed to work off of a battery only. One overarching difference between powered aircraft and gliders is the amount of electricity available. Since most gliders don’t have engines, everything is battery powered. Gliders don’t have an engine helping create power and they also don’t have a vacuum system to spin gyros. So glider instruments and electronics are generally custom designed to minimize power consumption. You really can’t just take a Cessna 172’s instruments (transponder, DG, AI, turn and bank, etc) and just put them in a glider, since you won’t have the electricity available or vacuum system available to make them work. Anyway, just my two cents, since I didn’t see anyone else answer your questions and I have some level of knowledge here. Lastly, I think you should give soaring a shot. It’s incredibly fun. I fly powered aircraft also. I like both, but there’s something truly special about flying in the mountains without an engine!

Transponder turned to on while on the ground, naughty. Better to get into habit of activating just before flight even if it has squat or airspeed switch.

Is the other glider with the red tail the Phoebus? Can't wait to see it in action again. Very curious how well you thermal in it compared to when you owned it earlier. Looking forward to the new season.

Yep - will be VERY interesting to fly her and see how well she thermals. Will be a few more months before this happens though because I need to fly my 27 and get ready for the nationals we are hosting in the end of next month. After that is over I plan to really start flying the Phoebus a bunch again.
