Sonnet 259. To Kai Jeje at One Year Old, from a Difference of Opinion that Will Never End.
Your dad and I have very different views
On influencing children in beliefs;
On how I’d raise my son, how he’d raise you
Towards theistic attitudes on life,
And how much of life’s wonder we ascribe
To deities’ constructions, how much love
We filter through the thoughts of bronze-age scribes
Who thought the world was flat, and . . . well, enough!
When I first saw my son he looked confused,
I don’t think this had changed when he was one.
But life provides us so much we can use
To pivot on to face the times to come,
Like solid father’s love, a ground that’s firm
From which to face the universe and learn.
