Here is the making of a custom, modern walnut coffee table designed and built for my clients. While a simple looking build, this table tested my technical skills as I tried something brand new to me, a trapped sliding dovetail connecting the bases to the top by sliding the top around the base, locking the dovetail in. This joint will help keep the table top flat, resists racking making the table super strong without the need for a lower stretcher. At the end of the day, this table is an example of how homemade is better than store bought.

Sliding dovetails might be a plan for my next table I like how it locks it all in.

I've never seen a captured sliding dovetail like that, great implementation for tabletop joinery!

I like that it's completely hidden but with the benefits of a dovetail rather than just a mortise which still needs screws to keep it in place. It's worth a try, pretty easy to do with a template and the right router bits!

Those sliding dove tails look a great idea. Loved the build but also your video style. Great work all round.

Thanks! It worked out pretty well, definitely a technique I'll use again, and I appreciate the feedback on the video!

Knowing when "Not To Act" can be more important than knowing "When To Act"

Definitely agree. That's the "Do nothing" part of it

Beautiful table! I love the idea of using the sliding dovetails as the way to assemble the tabletop. I might have to try that for my next coffee table. Nice fix on the leg gaps as well.

Thanks! I didn't highlight the leg fix well but after finish I had a hard time picking them out. The sliding dovetail assembly method is totally worth a try. That table ended up super solid. No movement or wobble at all. Helps using all 8/4 walnut too!
