The ultranationalists win the civil war against the loyalists and take the power on Russia. Then tensions between the so current Russian and American governments increase stratospherically, causing a Second Cold War between US and Russia. *MW2:* An American satellite falls on Kazakhstan lands and the Russian military reach there to investigate, they discover an ACS module in the satellite that could cause the weakening of US military defenses, to a possible invasion in a full scale war between them. The UN get aware of that, and in an attempt to cease the increasing tensions between US and Russia, sends the Task Force 141, a worldwide peacekeeper organization, to Kazakhstan to recover the ACS module from the Russians, so a full scale war could be avoided. But it was too late, Task Force 141 discovers that the ACS module was already decoded, and US military defenses were weakened. Task Force 141 in a last attempt to avoid an active conflict, tries unceasingly to find and capture Makarov, a Russian ultranationalist terrorist that got aware of the decoded ACS module, and so plans to start an active military conflict between Russia and US, but Task Force 141 fails. Makarov creates the Inner Circle, a terrorist organization, and execute his plan. A group of members of the Inner Circle is sent to an international Russian airport to commit a terrorist attack, after the attack when they attempt to escape the airport, Joseph Allen (covered as Russian by the CIA) is killed by Makarov who already knew of his identity. Makarov sends an anonymous message to the Russian/world media that an "American extremist" (Joseph Allen) was the responsible for the terrorist attack on Russian lands. When the Russian military reaches the US east coast, a full scale war starts and WW3 commence. *MW3:* Task Force 141 get disavowed for killing a high rank US military member (General Shepherd, that was conniving with Makarov), but now with only a few members, they still continue to work on the shadows to find Makarov, kill him and stop the war that was raging on US and Europe, as ultranationalist armies also invaded Europe to dominate it.

It was more so that the towers collapse represented just how much of a toll the war had taken on mankind, so much so that even history has suffered from it. Thats why I thought it was cool that even the russians stopped shooting when they noticed the towers collapse, its as if everyone on the ground was in shock at just how deep they let this war develop.
