Generators will typically give out if you have an upgraded sound system or any other accessories. Stock generator wasn’t built to push out that much juice. Alternator will definitely help your problems.

Thanks man ima boutta do this to my 71 this weekend, you should check out cb performance, its a badass little veedub shop 10 min from my house couldn't get any easier
I put in a hard star relay and a new ground cable when I did the upgrade so it is hard to tell if that is what made the difference but it does start up easier.
