The race we have been wanting to run for a while!
Who will win?!
Whenever we have roll raced our JZA80 MKIV Supra, it's been a struggle to shift fast enough to keep up with autos, even with far less power..
So we figured we would put our two modified Supras head to head in this roll race :)

Admittedly I was shifting 2nd to 3rd slowly to ensure I didn't accidentally drop back to 1st. It's a 22 year old gearbox with worn bushes. Needs the shifters refreshed to make sure that transition between gears is faster, then I won't be nursing it.

B58 has the benefit of 20 years of engine and turbo development. It's about 60% of the 2JZ's weight and it can make the kind of horsepower with just a tune that you'd need to spend 10k in bolt ons to make on the MKIV Supra. And it does it all while getting the same fuel effeciency as an FA20 lol. That said, the 2JZ is still a marvel of engineering and the cast iron weight penalty is acceptable if your goal is to build a 1500hp engine.

The Mk5 has a gearing and launch advantage, as the aluminium block means better weight distribution for better launch, and in the lower gears, the ratios are very close, that translates to more acceleration. By the time the MK4 starts to catch up due to more power, the Mk5 already created a large gap (that's for drag racing). For cornering, the Mk5 has a weight distribution advantage, while the MK4 is the definition of understeer

Wow, the b58 is a very torquey engine. Despite being down on hp, it almost matches the A80 torque wise and didn't fall back too far in the runs. How has the autobox faired with the torque figures?

It's also much, much lighter than the 2JZ. The cast iron bottom end is like an anchor. B58 weight makes the MKV and M240i able to achieve 50/50 weight distribution.

on the a80 is that compressor surge or just the wastegate opening and closing? I've always wondered what that surging noise.

Basically wastegates only open when the engine has been fed as much boost as it's asking for. In this case not much off 30psi, meaning the wastegate barely opens, especially since it's a huge 60mm gate, we put on in case we wanted to run a bigger turbo in future if we planned on doing a 3.4L bottom end. SO the gate is only just cracking open which means it flutters open and shut to control the boost. We technically could get away with a 35mm gate while running 25+psi of boost. If we were running say 15psi then you'd hear the gate open all the way since it needs to "Waste" more exhaust gas and bypass the turbo exhaust wheel.

Thanks mate! they are both beautiful cars mate. I will have to get the ol falcon out to one of these roll racing track days. Nice supras! On the MKIV you can not utilize no lift to shift with your current engine management or put in a wot box? Makes a world of a difference with a healthy transmission and clutch.

Not too bad as we were only doing short stints. During the long circuit layouts the intake temps get very high, but until someone makes a new intake manifold we are stuck with just upgraded heat exchanger, which has made a huge difference.

The 60mm waste gate is so big that it barely needs to crack open, so it flutters open and closed, it's a way oversized gate, but keeps the boost well in check ;) Just sounds weird.

No wonder your Supra is laggy if you're running a hypertune manifold. Have you guys solved the bump steer issue we are having with our a90's? Ive changed control arms and tried to align it in a way that reduces the amount of toe created by the bump steer but its still all over the place. Im currently still faster in my a80

The bump steer claim is just not true. The guy that was harping on about that on youtube had a completely slammed A90 at the ring and wondered why it handled poorly. It does, however have an issue with ESC not disabling properly which rips the car into random directions when trail braking if you start to slide. That's dangerous.

That's an extremely short race, ik these cars fall out of boost 2nd-3rd, but after that shift, they haul ass. My 2jz mk3 with a r154 and a 3.73 raced an automatic 335i making about 500 hp as my car was somewhere in the mid 500s or so. I lost ground 2-3 and then made it up afterwards. And I granny shifted the shit out of it (was having what I did not know was ecu issues at the time), so yes autos are fast, but not THAT fast to the point a 2-300 hp difference can be made up for. This race is on my channel for anyone who wants to see what im talking about.

Great video. That old 2JZ sounds soooooo good. I have no idea why everybody puts that stupid pop'n'bang tune to their A90s , which does make it sound broken. And to this is supposed to be the best exhaust system on the market for the 2020 Supra... 🤦🏻‍♂️ Other than that, both cars look great, have awesome specs and I would not mind to have either of them (minis that stupid popcorning on the A90 FFS).

@@bruh-ib5hz It's still a hardtop Z4, no two ways about it. If BMW were to offer a hardtop Z4 and some tuners put a tacky bodykit on it with fake vents and a Toyota badge, you'd have this car. If I have a Toyota Camry and I want to get it serviced, I don't need to ask myself "should I take it to a Toyota dealership or some other brand's dealership?" - Because the Toyota Camry is a Toyota and Toyota mechanics will understand it best. However with the MKV, common sense would suggest that BMW would understand the car far better than Toyota would. I wouldn't be surprised if BMW won't look at it and refer you to Toyota due to the agreement they have with Toyota, but that doesn't mean BMW aren't better qualified given it is their car and their platform.

Keep telling people, auto is the way to go. Faster off the line and shifts faster and stays in boost. I have seen way too many videos of Supras falling back every time they shift, but luckily for them, that 1000 whp makes up for it so they stay ahead. My 98 Supra is automatic and i love it, would NEVER swap it out.

I have a MKIV (big single turbo) and ordered a MK5 (did cancel the order in the end) and rolling in gear the MK5 would get murdered I think at the same power level it would be a good battle for sure but I don’t think there’s much chance getting a lot of the components holding up too well at those high hp levels. Great car, could have been better though, still love it though none the less.

@@short19369 rods, pistons, and head studs is bullshit parts? Look at the bullshit parts for the B58. The cracked rods are the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The cylinder head initially had 2 exhaust ports, serverely limiting exhaust flow, and good luck swapping cams out to get better ones without taking the engite engine out SHORTY

The B58 has factory larger turbo from the damn factory detuned and is almost 30 years later in technology. American BPU Supras have made 450-500whp with our larger twin turbos in MK4 Supras for years and have gone 10s Why is this even impressive? It’s flat out stupid a full BPU American TT Supra here in the states was good for mid 400s back in the mid 2000s that’s what we could do with them since we got the larger twin turbos and we went 10s with them stock twins with tuning. If you wanna make it a even playing field with cams you can get into 450whp+ and make technology you could get a American BPU car with cams close to a B58 if you up date the ECU and let it have cams or a VVTI head

@@aaronsanchezz The only thing made by Yamaha on the jzs is the cylinder head 😂😂😂 And either way its still JAPANESE at least. Actually toyota partnered with yamaha on a lot of engine head designs and they all became amazing. 1jz, 2jz, 4age, 3sge, 3sgte. To name a few 😂 But at least toyota BUILT the rest of the engine and car. Bmw made the entire engine, trans, suspension. Literally everything you could think of and even had some influence on the outside thats why it kinda looks like a Z4. 🤡 But nissan did it right with the new 400z

Those people who say MK4 takes advantage that's ofc that B58 isn't tuned much and 150hp less but can't y'all see that 150hp difference was just little bit far away between that MK4? Like I mean that 2JZ did so much work just little bit faster although B58 just touched a lil bit

2jz standard engine is quite easy to get high power.. You don't neet to do much... The engine is very durable. 👌👌

How do you fuck up shifting an Auto? First race you can clearly hear a double shift, lost all RPM Second race, same shit. 3rd race, it sounded like a serious power cut happened on the first shift. Please tell me it wasn't the owner driving.

Why do they race cars with different hp? It's most likely the car with the most hp will win. But sometimes, not much, the car with less hp will win. Edit: I don't know much about horsepower.
