Modifying a Children's Toy Until It Hurts

This is how I made my favorite Nerf gun painfully strong and fully automatic to boot. I always wanted a good Halo Nerf Blaster, so when Nerf released the MA40 last year I upgraded it to be everything I wanted it to be.
The concept is pretty simple: use motors to shoot the darts and a solenoid to push them in. Then, use an Arduino to control both the motors and the solenoid. I cycle the solenoid 10 times per second. That's as close to the max you can get with my setup, considering the speed the return spring can be ready for the next dart.
The solenoid also makes a very heavy impact every time you activate it. It feels great to use as you feel the whole Nerf blaster jolt in your hands. You can even see me run it without any darts in just because of this at the end.
This channel is going to be oriented towards fleshing out my projects and ideas. Most will probably revolve around some electronics work, but it wont be exclusive. This wont be a Nerf channel, I just like to work on Nerf blasters. I'm really excited to make more things.

I know it's been almost a year since you've worked on this, but how did you fit in the solenoid? I was very inspired by your work and I'm building my own version, but no matter how much shell cutting I do I can't seem to fit my solenoid. It looks like the exact same one as yours, 1.5 x 1.26

I cut and shaved a lot of the shell down. My b for the late reply lmao

@@sharp-02 Dude this video is great. The editing could have been a bit more engaging but either way this video deserves so much more exposure!

@@sharp-02 Oh Awesome! Im about to start working on a video for a big project! But for the editing just playing some footage that compliments what your saying more often will be much more engaging than just talking head footage. I wouldnt reccomend really messing around with captions cause they honestly take away from the focus of the viewer and are super overrated. i would only ever use them in the intro.

Nice one - I was wondering when you'd hit on the idea of getting a 3S lipo instead of messing around increasing the voltage 😆 And why not use a MOSFET to drive the solenoid? That would avoid the magic smoke problem of high current going through the other parts of the circuit 🤷🏻‍♂️

You can actually see MOSFETs scattered all around the blaster. You have one for motor control, one for the solenoid, and one acting as a power switch. Using just a MOSFET wouldn't work. The issue wasn't with something like a switch, it was the voltage multiplier overheating and being pushed too far with how I was using it. But yeah, I definitely should've just jumped up to a higher voltage battery in the first place lmao

Pro build good video. Boost modules eh 2 batteries better solution
@sharp-02

best solution for me would probably be to use a single high capacity 4S battery, then use a buck converter to provide power to the motors. But, 2 batteries works a lot better and (a whole lot sooner) than that would've.
