Modifying a road/rack case for a Presonus 32SC console

We are modifying a Midas M32R road/rack case to support a Presonus StudioLive 32SC console. It is a common practice to modify cases to support other gear; this is how many types of road/rack cases can be reused for gear they were not designed for.
There are a few ways to configure this rack case. We select one solution.

I have seen you do some woodworking before. So why not take the wood on which the rackrails are mounted out (3 bolts per side) and angle them? It's a 15 minute expedition with a pencil, saw and drill. Putting foam under your mixer in order to shock mount the mixer and then mounting the mixer to the rackrail basically nulls the shock mounting as you need a dampened case in a case to have some sort of shock mounting.

Good observation. I considered adjusting the rack rails, but was saving that option as a last resort. I don't like performing direct modifications on equipment, unless absolutely necessary; I'm not a wood worker and can easily mess up an easy job. The foam isn't actually there for shock mounting, but there is some (very minor) benefit of part of the console sitting on it. You are correct, the entire case would need to be foamed to ensure an actual shock loading option (similar to our full size Presonus console cases, which are not rack cases).

That seems like the best solution to me too. It even looks like you could drill extra holes and cut the bottom off at an angle and still be able to put it back the way it was if needed. And that would make for a much more solid mounting for the mixer.

You could use some nylon spacers with the longer rack screws. They come in various lengths so you could use shorter ones in front and longer ones in back for the angle you want.

Good idea.

Allen & Heath designed the QU-16 format in a way so that it would be a direct replacement for the MixWizzard mixers meaning that MixWizzard users wouldn't have to buy a new case when upgrading.

Oh so you guys have an Digital snake and AWB splitter now. I never saw a video when u guys implemented it so i didnt know u had gotten that. Nice to see some AVB / AES-50 stuff getting some use as well as the analog snakes! Edit: Oh well i guess i missed the last video oops

We are still using analog snakes! The digital snake setup will probably only be used under certain setups... basically, for indoor events. You can't be analog snakes during outdoor events!

Have you guys had any problems with your NSB 32.16? For some reason with mine, it keeps dropping signal.. Not sure what is causing or what I need to do to fix the issue..

The signal drops are usually due to incorrect network cables. We use Cat5e for all the short runs (less than 100') and Cat6a for runs longer than 100'. Cat5e is the minimum classification that should be used with AVB. Anything less than Cat5e will most likely not work. Also, check the MHz of the Cat cables you are using (the MHz should be printed directly on the cable). I think AVB requires a minimum of 350 MHz. If you are using two consoles, ensure the sampling rate is the same between them. Also, make sure the second console is getting its "clocking rate" from the network, it should not be using its internal clocking.

I use LYX Pro cables. Tried other inexpensive brands, and they did not work!

A much better solution would be to modify the case (as implied in the title) to align the rack ears to the need. That would provide a correct distribution of the forces and restrict movement in both directions when the case gets bumped, dropped, etc. This solution is pretty sketchy for a mixer.

Thanks for your comment. The rack ears are attached to wood; the wood is attached to the inside of the case. The issue with aligning the rack ears would involve having to remove the rear and forward latches (which would involve removing all rivets and adding all new rivets) to adjust the wood a few degrees; this would have been a very time consuming and potentially expensive modification. The console is very secure to the rails.

Where did you get the cases in US?

It depends on the case... we use some Road Ready, Rack Ready, EWI, Gator. Not every manufacturer makes all cases to everyone; we use whomever has what we need.
