Hey ho! Welcome to a new little series in which I will build, paint and review some miniatures from the upcoming Fallout Wasteland Warfare tabletop game, kindly provided by Modiphius Entertainment. In this episode, I show a brief primer on how to work with and assemble resin models.
Fallout Wasteland Warfare releases in may 2018 and is available here: www.modiphius....
Disclaimer: Modiphius Entertainment provided the models for me to review but I have received no other favours or benefits in exchange for these videos.

Instead of fiddling with the rubber line to fill the gap, just use medium or thick super glue. It does a nice job of filling smaller gaps and makes the joint stronger as well.
@gurufoxx
@gurufoxx 5 лет назад
It does, but I wanted something that could easily end up looking like part of the kit (i.e. a rope around his arm) rather than something I would need to sand away and hide). Sometimes hiding a gap with greebles can be more effective and fun than making it disappear, if you see what I mean)

I actually worked on some models for this game, Jonny is the in house guy that overseas everything and does some models himself but the models are done by a number of contractors and freelancers, not just one guy :)

I would like to inform everyone here that its rare for the pieces to be so bent like that. The hammer does come out the mould slightly bent but not much. Dogmeat occasionally has a bubble on his chest but the one in the video got past QC somehow and the sprue itself is generally quite straight, although if you place in hot enough water the resin will find its memory shape n its own without any bending. My team work to a very high standard of casting and the items in this video are not a perfect representation of what we produce. I must add though this is a very good video for learning how to assemble these and dealing with the issues that can arise. Thankyou.

I hope the video didn't give the wrong impression, given the difficulties of producing resin models, I was super impressed that the only thing I had was a tiny tiny bubble, which was pretty much nothing. Having slight bends in thin spindly parts is not unusual in resin kits and should not be taken as a sign of poor quality - it's just one of those things that resin does from time to time (I can't recall but I think I said as much in the film and, like you say, hopefully I showed that straightening them is easy peasy.) But I had hoped to instil in viewers that although one should not approach resin without knowing the potential for cleanup and rectification that may be needed in some cases (i.e. poor quality recast crap or ropey Forgeworld prints), these figures were INCREDIBLY high quality, the best I have come across. The occasional microscopic bubble or a tiny bit of mould wiggle are not anything to take points off for ^_^

A friend of mine is getting the game soon and wants me to paint them. Normally i'm not as worried about them being super neat and i just use super glue, but the ones i will be working on won't be for me so this is going to be super helpful!

Hello Foxx, I'm finally back to the hobby after several month of pause. Currently I'm finishing the MG Rick Dias Quatro Bajeena color and I also started the Ex Model 1/1700 Magellan from Bandai. I already knew all those tricks for resin kits but your tutorial is really well made.I have two resin kits to do, all from E2046: a Landmate from Appleseed (I'm a big fan of Masamune Shirow since this manga and way before Ghost in the Shell) and a figure of Marida Cruz from Gundam Unicorn which will go well with 1/100 Elyn K'shatriya.

Hey I know this video is like 4 years old but I just got my first model today and was wondering if Tamiya extra thin cement plastic glue could work on assembling the models? I’ve tried it and it doesn’t seem to work at all
@gurufoxx
@gurufoxx 10 месяцев назад
No, polystyrene cement will not work on resin models. The cement works by melting polystyrene and welding the parts together permanently so will only work on substrates that contain polystyrene (same for any modelling cements). Resin models require a bonding glue - either cyanoacrylate (CA) glue - also known as superglue - or epoxy glue. CA glue is the most practical option for most models, especially small ones, unless you have very big parts that need a good structural bond - which is when the stronger epoxy glues would be needed. These glues are bonding glues, which means they do not alter the structure of the resin but just act as a mechanical bond between the two resin pieces, working themselves into the pores of the resin (which is why sometimes for large load-bearing joints you will see people adding metal pins between the parts to add extra structural strength). Get yourself a thick and a thin CA glue, and some needle-tip applicators for the thin, and you will be set :)

Pretty funny. That you use the Canadian national anthem underneath the US graphic 😂
@gurufoxx
@gurufoxx 6 лет назад
It started out of laziness because when I was importing the audio files, the US national anthem was a the bottom of my audio files list, and the Canadian one was at the top, but over time it just became habit (plus also "Oh Canada" is a much better piece of music ^_^)

Can you not use a wet paintbrush to smooth out the putty to avoid sanding it? I really liked your rope fix on the super mutant by the way.
@gurufoxx
@gurufoxx 6 лет назад
You certainly could wth water-soluble putty, although if putty is thick then you need to apply pressure to it too which is where tools or fingers come in handy ^_^
@Rohnon
@Rohnon 5 лет назад
you can also use a two part epoxy/ modelling mass (common one: Green Stuff or Milliput) You just stick it into the gab and smooth it with a wet tool (Brush is too soft)

Do you mean the cutters I used to take the parts off of the sprue? I picked up their star trek models and put them together, not knowing you needed to wash them. Is it better to lightly wash them put together, or leave them alone and hope for the best when I paint them? Thanks and great video!
@gurufoxx
@gurufoxx 6 лет назад
Yes, if they are already assembled, just wash them with water and washing up liquid anyway. Give then a good 24 hours for the glue to cure first though, and to avoid messing with the CA, wash them in cold water, not warm, to be safe. Although, if they do come apart, it's no problem, as the CA will simply break down and the parts will still be intact :) You absolutely will need to wash them though, as the release agents on the resin will screw up any paint applied to it (the agents are designed to stop anything sticking to the resin, so it can come out of the mould).

As a beginner to miniatures (I've dabbled in Warhammer 40K in the past but had to give it up due to my AS/A levels and never got back into it even though I'm sitting on loads unpainted miniatures) what would you recommend, resin or plastic? I understand that resin is higher quality but I don't really want to have the responsibility of sanding the miniatures down and having to take precautions when doing so. I am yet to finish the video but if this is answered in the video I'll just delete my comment. If you do read this comment and decide to reply, thanks in advance!

It is a question of preference, to be honest. If you are just starting out in your model making a̶d̶d̶i̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ career then plastic will give you a much easier time. Resin figures are usually fine but will either give you an easy-peasy time (like with these ones, which were super easy and fit together beautifully) or they will be absolute gash and give you nothing but nightmares. I personally don't mind working with resin for single figures like these, but I avoid resin for anything larger, as a rule. It is a luck of the draw as to how good the manufacturer is (i.e. these guys are very high quality, whereas Finecast resins from Games Workshop are usually terrible). With plastic, the worst you may have to do is a little seam line removal, whereas with a poorly made resin figure, you could end up with areas that need a complete resculpt or, in very bad cases, getting replacement parts altogether. Just ask anyone which is better or more fun - a GW plastic vehicle you can build straight out of the box, or a Forgeworld resin vehicle that will have a high need for cleanup and filling, warped parts voids, bubbles and often parts you cannot use that will need to be replaced :) However, all that said, these Fallout minis are at the start of their production run so I found quality to be very high, clean up was super-minimal - a few seam lines - and they were super-easy to build. TL;DR for small minis like these, it doesn't really matter as they are usually all easy and straightforward but quality will vary massively between manufacturers. For larger things - vehicles, large figures, stuff like that - I would leave those for when you have a lot more experience as they are a whole different difficulty curve. ^_^

Modelmaking Guru Thanks for the helpful and surprisingly quick response. I'm leaning more toward plastic because they are prebuilt as I messed up some of my Warhammer figures when gluing them together so I don't want to mess up something like this because I don't think you can buy the mini's separately from the site, nor is it popular enough to be able to buy them off of eBay. I'll likely just buy the starter set first as I don't want to go too deep and I also don't have many friends and I don't yet know if they're going to be into miniature type games though I'm sure my brother will give it a shot since he introduced me into the fallout franchise. The figures will also remain unpainted for a while, in the meantime I think I'll start painting Warhammer again to practise. Thanks for the amazing and very helpful advice. One final question, is there any difference when painting on resin as opposed to plastic?
@gurufoxx
@gurufoxx 6 лет назад
No worries :) There's no difference as far as painting is concerned, most primers that you will be used to using will work just fine on resin. Just make sure that when working with resin you wash the pieces in water and dish soap to before you prime or paint - this is essential with ANY resin kit, to remove any mould release agent - otherwise you may find paint and primer not sticking.
@arenoskarlaen4951
@arenoskarlaen4951 6 лет назад
Modelmaking Guru Thanks for the helpful response! I'm gonna buy the plastic starter set just to see if I like it and I might buy a resin add on pack e.g. the radroaches as they are relatively cheap. Now I REALLY want to get the set however, I'm going to email Modiphius since I'm a bit confused on how their pre-order works. Thanks for the incredibly helpful advice!
