I talk about the mods I have and the order of importance. Hard choices for the hardcore off airport machines we fly.
I have to go home eventually and someday's it is more difficult then I like. This day it is rain, most days's it is wind. The other morning I was blinded by the sun in my eye's... I wished I had a longer runway! Or maybe an Easy button :))

Hey Greg, after being canceled twice due to weather I finally got my check-ride done on May 15th. It was raining and I had 10-15knot crosswinds at my home strip, but I wasn’t going to back down unless the DPE forced me to. I felt good about myself until I watched this haha. I’ve been flying off of nothing but grass since the ride, and hopefully I’ll start catching up to you in a couple thousand hours! Great video as always, I appreciate all the work you put in, your videos are what kept me motivated through training.

Good mods. Good stuff. As usual, your impeccable attention to detail shines brightly. A lot of folks forget about the prop and it’s relation to takeoff distance when they talk wing mods. A good prop makes a difference in the entire STOL system…not just for takeoff, but when arresting sinkers on final. Too bad you don’t have bleed air. You could use it for windshield rain removal like the DC-8. Worked really well when adjusted properly.

Sweet Greg! I was just thinking yesterday I haven't seen a GM video in a bit. Love the PSTOL's ...I recently watched the testing video Airframes Alaska did on them and if I remember right they decreased the speed over stock flaps by 4 mph, but I think they were bringing the nose up and getting it as slow as possible stock. Pretty impressive the result was a shallow deck angle wheel landing and they still got slower with the PSTOL's. They are perfect for the way you land in the back country. I like the name "Bumble Bee"...just as much as "Playtime". Have you thought any more about naming it?

How do you know the wind speed and direction above the trees when you take off from your home strip? Thanks for sharing another entertaining and informative video!!
@mauleguy
@mauleguy 3 года назад
The prevailing winds are typically out of the west (head wind for take off). I can tell a lot just by the trees themselves. I usually come back to my home strip light on fuel so that I have plenty of extra margin for take off next time I am going somewhere. If I do have to take off with an East wind I am pretty cautious, take off early in the morning before the wind is up, or move gear to an alternate strip to pick up. Leave fuel behind is another option. I have two 15 gallon poly tanks for that.

I’m building a carbon cub and am on the fence about 35’s. They recommend 31’s max for structural reasons, I think it might've had to do with a 9G drop test in which the weight of the 35’s damaged the gear but I'm not sure. Being experimental I can still run 35’s if I want though, you make a solid case for 35’s!

@mauleguy

Yeah it is in my 38 pound tool kit. The answer is no, but I would check tracking and once I got it close I would do a run up and if the vibration was acceptable fly it home or nearest airport. Once home I would pull the propeller off for either overhaul (propeller overhaul or replacement). Then I would check propeller flange with dial indicator. Unless you hit hard rarely is the flange bent if you just go over on your nose.

What is a "reverse dog leg"?

It is a mod to the fuselage for easier access to extended baggage area. Any new fuselage would already have it but older fuselages usually need it done along with other mods (X brace overhead, seat belt tabs, tail beef up are a few others)

you couldn't show flaps extension positions?

I could, just did not want to put a camera on outside in the rain that day. Another day I will, after I make the new flap ratchet. I will put some tape on the fuselage with degree indications and go out and film so you can see the reflex. This video was shot pretty much on the fly, I actually was not going to do anything and then figured I better put something up since it had been a few weeks.

@@mauleguy I don't mean if flight. I meant while you were describing it.

@@Tadrjbs Yeah could have but it is a little deceiving because on the ground you don't see the reflex but I get your point now. I will do a more in depth video on them. This was a short, hey look what I have now!
