Have you tried manual lens on this setup handheld with no stabilizer? I have a GH5S and (FD lenses) I just found out that it didn’t have IBIS and debating on trading it for a GH5
Not sure if this is still your setup, but when you were using the gh5 for run and gun were you relying on autofocus? I’ve heard lumix af is not the best. I know professionals rarely rely on af, but I imagine it’d be pretty hard to be out and about filming in a crowd or something and be constantly adjusting focus manually. Or maybe you just get really good at it over time? I’m trying to decide on my first camera, and I really like the versatility of gh5, af is the only thing that seems to be a downside. Any help appreciated!
Jphizzle96 I still have this setup but no I don’t rely on the autofocus. I prefer to adapt sigma lenses via speedbooster and continues AF is just terrible in this configuration. I have tested the gh5 with the 12-35 and the af is good enoug I’d say for RU-vid videos and personal projects b That’s not for pro jobs or weddings. If you need reliability you’ll want to go canon for AF sadly.
Just came across this video as I just got a gh5s. Awesome info. Thank you so much. What modification would you make to the setup if not using the battery grip? I assume the smallrig 2049 cage? What else?
@@RyanTimms Thanks for replying so quickly, and I am considering the Tilta Nucleus Nano for the follow focus on the rig you have, I'm going to use it on a Voigtlander 17.5, mainly because I have arthritis in my hands. Do you have any experience or know anything about the Tilta? Again I really appreciate your videos.
@@manny2958 I have used it though not extensively. its okay...but not the best thing ever. I personally prefer a hard, manual FF if I am the one pulling focus. If you need wireless function like someone is pulling focus for you from a monitor its not bad for that on a budget.
Cool! I bought the same one last year. I love this cage. I love using the extra battery extension, and how easy it is to switch the battery from the side. Keep up the good work.🤓👍
Are you able with this rig to get "cinematic" handheld look out of your gh5s (no ibis) or is still the common dslr "micro shaking" look? Maybe I need to add a vlock battery to add extra weight to get this RED handheld look? Thank you so much
Yes, the weight for me is pretty good. Adding any lens with IS is more than enough in my opinion. Vmount batteries would add a lot of unnecessary weight, unless you were going to power like a Shogun inferno I dont really see the need for the vmount.
Ryan Timms Well I want to be able to use the gh5s with my Sigma 18-35 or Voigtlander 17.5 (any of those has IS) to get the cinematic handheld look of bigger camera (the one you talk about in your first RED use experience video). I’m trying to know how much more weight I need...
its always easy to add more weight! so for me I always like smaller gear especially when I'm traveling. so if you can try a battery grip and cage like this its actually quite heavy. I'd start here before spending the money on something like vmount batteries. Unless you already have some in which case thats path of least resistance.
My setup works quite similar with the only difference, that my main cage satys on the camera all the time. That allows my to have the tilta nucelus n always mounted, no matter if i´m on a gimbal or handheld
Hi Ryan, great review as I am looking to get a GH5s and set it up, exactly like this. I have a GH5. Can you provide a link for the red camera top handle please? Is this the nato rail you used please? www.smallrig.com/smallrig-mini-quick-release-nato-rail-48mm-2172.html How long are the rod rails? 6inch, 8inch or 12inch? For the rod block are you using this? SMALLRIG 15mm Dula Rod Clamp for 15mm Rail Support System - 942 And the monitor mount is it this: www.smallrig.com/smallrig-dslr-monitor-holder-with-nato-clamp-2100.html Thank you.
not too hard to reach around to pull it on a longer lens. the cage also has room for rails if you wanted to attach a follow focus. I use only Sigma Art lenses so plenty of room. but I imagine on many MFT lenses it would be more difficult.
This cage has slots for rails to go out the front so you could use any follow focus you'd like. I have the Z drive from zacuto and the new tilta follow focus (the one that's like 80 bucks) and both work great. I often opt not to use them however and just go for pulling by hand. Especially on the photo lenses.
You could still do all of this with the XLR helmet just slap a nato rail on top of the XLR unit for a top handle or use the funky one that comes with. That was one option I explored but it just makes the camera super tall.
Yeah, I did something similar to that, but stripped it down to just XLR Helmet and my bracket for my Atomos Ninja inferno, as before it wobbled too much.
Yep! with the right cage in theory all of this would work. My main focus for modularity is built around the Nato rails. Any possible place I can put a nato rail I want it. for me it is the fastest way to swap around parts. Cheers!
