I made a new modular workbench design in an effort to organize my shop. The goal was creating a modular design, one that can be made larger or smaller with trivial changes, as well as one that can be modified later without a rebuild. It also needed to be super strong to hold heavy bench top tools.

When some people say "modular workbench", they're thinking of a workbench that clicks together like a puzzle so you can change its shape. To me, a modular workbench is a design that's easy to customize early on and easy to modify down the road. I came up with this design because I wanted a super strong workbench frame, that I would assemble once, but allow me to customize parts of it down the road, specifically the top and storage. I wanted to establish a standard to how I build workbenches so I can always swap out tool storage without rebuilding the entire bench. An idea I had, that I don't have a need for. The top could have dog holes and be used as a more traditional workbench. the extra space under the top and above the cabinets would give extra space for dog hole clamps.

The hardest part must be the table top. I mean 2x4 are so warped, crooked that it's tough to align them. Plus your top has no knot 👍

I went with southern yellow pine, that may have helped the quality of the boards. Plywood is a great alternative though because you don’t have to worry about wood movement.
