@@BigOwl51 yeah sorry about that, anthony broke into my house while i was in the shower and started typing comments on his videos again from my account. frankly im getting tired of this shit.
The vocals on Richie Sacramento are a highlight for me. I love that they sound so pure, genuine, and perhaps a tad fragile. Really makes the track stand out, to my ears.
Nothing wrong with your ears. Fantano leans so much toward music with harder or grimier or eccentric vocals. I think anything else just sounds boring or bland to him these days.
@@lawrencecabanero6964 it's not only these days, he's pretty notoriously not getting the appeal of a Yung Lean for example, with his sort of standoffish and hushed vocal delivery. he ends up praising it only when it's obviously elevated by the musical/lyrical context (Phil Elverum for example)
@@carlrdbro1230 i'm not talking quiet or reserved, more like standoffish, shy, kind of awkward, not exactly skillfull singing. if it's coming out of a record that isn't extremely diy or experimental, anthony is pretty dismissive towards it.
@@sammieslaterjr.8982 Right, I see what you mean! maybe you're right... He did mac demarco a good score, I'd say his voice is kind of awkward at times, but then, that record is pretty old. Also radiohead's a moon shaped pool and car seat headrest, all though they are very diy

Mogwai are legends, heroes of the pedalboards, champions of the amplifiers, conquerors of our eardrums, our fathers our kings, the true pride of Scotland. In short, they are the best band on the planet Earth. Finally, they became popular with the masses. Although the album is truly marvelous, the best one out of the last three, a light 6 is exactly what I expected from a universally perplexed and somewhat dabbler of a music reviewer. The album is good, a solid 8.
Each to their own .I think its a great album and a return to form.I give it 9/10 on the strength of 3 listens so far .I rate the band musicwise as highly as I do the Beatles when it comes to producing not one nor two but many masterpieces.
Mogwai have always been a bit hit and miss since Happy Songs but come on man, this is their most consistent start to end record in a long time, better than Rave Tapes even.
Completely disagree. This album is fuckin' awesome from start to finish. Wasn't that happy with a new Mowai album as a whole since Hardcore Will... Even though I love 'em all. Mogwai records are pretty much sure shots. New album? Preorder.
Surprised you didn't give 2011's Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will a shout out. Your highly favorable review of that turned me onto them back in the day.
Everyone Everyone around here Everyone is so near It’s holding on It’s holding on And everyone, everyone is so near, Everyone has got the fear, It’s holding on It’s holding on It’s holding on It’s holding on It’s holding on
Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever it's a fun song, and I think it's admiring a band with more than 25 years and with the Mogwai backlog edits a song like that. As for the songs with orchestrations it was worth to mention that it were done by Atticus Ross in "Midnight Flit" and Colin Stetson in “Pat Stains”. If it didn't have all these diferent elements the band would be acused of repeating he same formula. Best record from Mogwai since Harcore Will Never Die, But You Will (not considering the soundtracks) with new and old elements making it a fun record to listen!
I disagree about the vocals on “Ritchie Sacramento”. I got into Mogwai about ten years ago and I have an affection for their album “Rave Tapes” and soundtrack they did for the French TV series “Les Revenants”. One of my favourite songs that’s been released in the last ten years is from the “Rave Tapes” sessions, that song is “Teenage Exorcists”, which has similar vocals to “Ritchie Sacramento” (as does their cover of the song “What are they doing in Heaven Today?” on the Les Revenants soundtrack). The dull, affect-less vocals to me have always seemed a feature of their work as a result, so it’s mostly down to personal taste as to whether you enjoy that style of vocal or not. I think given the era of music they came from (mid-90s UK music scene) that shoegaze is the greatest influence on their sound and mood; especially on “Teenage Exorcists” and many tracks on this most recent album. To me, and as I’ve discovered many others, Mogwai’s distinctive sound is that of malaise and apathy. Personally I’ve always seen their music as a literal take on the name of the genre “post-rock”, as in: What do musical compositions which adhere to a more classical style look like now that rock music exists, and what can be composed in that style with rock’s instruments and effects? Their music resembles classical structures, and after studying Baroque music at uni I noticed similar features in Mogwai’s work (namely, like I said, the structure of the compositions). Anyway, this comment was supposed to just defend the vocals but turned into a piece of writing describing my general take on their work.
Crazy most parts he disliked or thought to be drab, I absolutely loved. Album has a slower pace but a great collection of songs. Should be on a 7-8 level tbh. Light 6 is way too low imo
Anthony basically said string arrangements = not good. He couldn't be more wrong here. It's definitely a standout and highlight of their career, love that track so much. It's beautiful.
This album was solid imo (probably 7-8/10), with a few amazing tracks, a few decent to solid tracks, a few wtf tracks. But I totally agree with your duds - "here we here we here we go forever" being completely forgettable. Midnight Flit, Dry Fantasy, and Pat Stains were incredible. I like how you pointed out how much heavier they sound on this LP in some spots. I hear some Tycho influence on this one as well.
I gotta disagree. I thought the album leaned heavier on guitars after a few more synth-heavy outings and it really felt like coming back to the home base, bringing back with them what they've been experimenting with over the last 7-8 years since Rave Tapes or even the Les Revenants soundtrack. I think this one will be in my rotation for the rest of the year, at least.
I feel like I've been hearing about mogwai for years and this album is the first time I've given them a serious listen, I've got to say that I like what I hear, if they've put out better stuff in the past I'll need to dig into that.
I love ceiling granny from this album, been listening to mogwai since I was a child and I'm 30 so for me there is always excitement when I hear a new album by them. But I'm not as harsh as you as I'm not a critic just a musician and fan of music 😅
I think this album is quite the fantastic piece, lots of gelling of ideas, very well structured songs. New sounds without being too derivative of modern music, and generously incorporated in the Mogwai sound. A revamped reborn Mogwai, and one that raises its head high.
Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever is one of the best tracks on the album! And vocals sound so unique... yes it is somewhat similar to Daft Punk's Human After All style, but yet so different and with a never-known-before flavour. This distorted nonsense is music to my ears :D
For me, Mogwai have to be experienced live to fully grasp their quality. On record they are good, and you get a sense of dynamics. But live the quiet parts are loud, and the loud parts will shake your bones. And always so perfectly tight. Masters of their art
Im more a jazzer these days but recorded an album while mogwai recorded come on die young and Snow Patrol recorded the sebadoh esque Songs for Polar Bears too in Chambers studios Edinburgh 1999. Annie Christian were on the scene at that time too such an amazing live band. Fond memories lot of talent at that time. Great to see mogwai do so well.
Definitely one of their best albums from top to bottom. It's right up there with ten rapid, young team, happy songs and hawk is howling which I think are their best works. When it's all said and done, it may be 3rd or 4th best of their entire catalog.
I do love Mogwai, and the times I've seen them live have both been some of the best live music I've ever seen. That said, you get the feeling on their recent albums they are a bit lost having changed their lineup and are not sure where to take their sound now that they've been at it for decades. Still, you gotta love them.
yep, their first albums are better, but i think it's still really good music. and the whole let's get it to number one in The Uk Charts made me happy for several weeks during the whole covid thing. that will make me love it forever! 🙂

I would recommend starting out with Young Team and working your way up all 10 albums chronologically. Then if you want more check Ep+6, they also have a ton of B Sides and bonus tracks you can find on youtube. Once the pandemic is over I definitely recommend catching them live, which is Mogwai at their best. Their live album Burning, does a great job at capturing their live sound and is a good mid point in the bands career, it features a lot of their best material. Been a fan for over a decade and I never miss a chance to see them!
I started with Come on Die Young, was quickly hooked on it. A quiet classic. Definitely not as heavy as their other material but more on the atmospheric side.

Yeah very mixed bag to me. The more it leans toward standard indie rock, the more bored I get. The more post rock leaning stuff was super by the book post rock. Fuck Off Money is an actual bop though!
I think it's their best studio album since Hardcore (and I love Every Country's Sun and do not hate Rave Tapes - and I don't care much about their soundtracks). The only thing that keeps me from considering this album a 10 is the mediocre vocals on Ritchie Sacramento that ruin some pretty good instrumentals.
I hope you have the second Cure album Seventeen Seconds, if not please make a review of that record because it's apsolutely incredible and influential in that catalogue of music.
@@viktorstanic4498 Yeah I do - just not so much now. I'm probably a bit older than you as I was born in the mid 70's. All of it pretty much at one time or another was a soundtrack to periods of my life despite being into bands like Bauhaus well after they had ended (and Tone on Tails too) - discovered Bauhaus in particular after the Love & Rockets "Express" record began getting airplay here in LA. Those three Cure records along with "Heaven Up Here" by Echo & the Bunnymen are more frequent for me.
@@viktorstanic4498 Unlike a lot of people my age, I suppose, I've moved along and didn't get hung up on a particular genre or era. But pretty much prefer music that is guitar driven.
@@theyearoftherat Oh, that's nice, yeah I think that one shouldn't be listening just one genre or one band, it's better and more enjoyable finding other bands and genres you like. Yeah you are way older haha i was born in 2003. My father got me addicted to 80s post punk, new wave etc.
His least favourite tracks are always my favourite. He said on The Agent Intellect that Pontiac 87 was his least fav which is like every Protomartyr fan's fav, and now he doesn't like Richie Sacramento or Here We Go Again???
definitely though ig we just need a bit more key artists that actually push the genre with cutting-edge releases tbh, I mean it's fine to stick on a particular stylization of sound because there's always gonna be a market for that (basically casual music fans who may just want to hear something predictable to enjoy w/o having to think too much) but for people who want to explore more musically as an audience, it can get tedious and it's not fun if a certain sound becomes chore-like to listen to.
