i am starting an amp company, and it is difficult finding video sound demos on the Weber alnico 15"s ...So Thank You !!! ( there are screen shots of my 1x15" cabinet design, tube amp, and finalized circuit in the photo album link in my circuit video description ) ...the amp is about 25 watts, it's a worlds first fully grid biased guitar amp circuit design... i did everything just by math so far., i have to save money to start...but i am a veteran cabinet designer, and the EPS 1x15 is my best guitar cabinet design ever..

Thanks! For me, this amp is the perfect blend of volume, crispness, and roundness. Plus, the simple circuit makes it very reliable. I love amps with built in reverb and tremolo, but I find that the more features you pack into an amp, the more stuff can break at a gig :-D

Leo called it the Pro, right? It was supposed to be the Pro working model. Saw them on stage with Bill Haley and the Comets. I also love this amp, have one, and it is perfect for all the reasons you mentioned; great weight, great speaker, great break up. They are great with pedals, but just plugging in is enough. Yes, it is like a deluxe but with just a little more power.

Consistently great tones in every video Eric. I love having a 15" in the arsenal (I have a Fender Excelsior filling that role, great skronky lo-fi tones.) Question: what made you decide to go with the Weber attenuator? I've decided to buy one myself & the Weber is on the shortlist, with the Suhr & Two Notes units. As I said above your tone is always on point no matter which amp you're using so it doesn't seem to me the Weber has much if any negative effects. Thoughts?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
+Done With It In general I really like Weber stuff. They've always been really helpful and their speakers are magic. I liked the idea that the weber attenuator has an actual speaker motor in it. It looks cool, and works great! I love the giant retro knob - very sci fi. Sonically, it does squish the bass a little bit, but so does every attenuator I ever heard. Plus, I don't really need much giant bass.

Thanks for feedback & quick reply. Not all RU-vidrs engage with their subscribers so generously! After a few days of homework & listening to opinions I ordered the Minimass about 30 minutes ago. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works with my main amp, a Dr Z Maz 18 head into a Z 1x12 cab loaded with an Alnico Gold. By far the best amp I've ever owned, got it for a steal, it's rated at 18 watts but I'd put it up against any 50 watt amp. It's LOUD. I also have a studio setup & am looking forward to using my amps directly for much quieter recording. When I want to work on projects at 2:00 am I won't be stuck with Bias or Logic's amp sims as my only options anymore. Thanks again Eric & keep up the good work. I'm very happy I found your channel. ;-)

Done With It congrats in advance! Don't be afraid to wind that thing way up - I find it doesn't really quiet things down until you really turn the knob - but it still sounds good! Btw I'm jealous of your celestions. Love the blue - never got to play a gold
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
Also, what mic are you using? Once I started using a ribbon mic everything sounds much more natural. LETS BUY ALL THE GEAR 👍🏻😆
@donewithmodernlife
@donewithmodernlife 7 лет назад
Eric Haugen oddly enough I love Alnico Blues when somebody else uses them, but they sound terrible when I play through them. The Gold is a whole different animal, just gorgeous. I bought the amp used so the speaker was already broken in which helps. If you get the opportunity check one out, the Maz has a very early Marshall/dash of Vox tone & the Gold seems to eat that up. As for mics I like to do the dual mic approach, most of the time it's a 609 & a 57 or Perception 220 if I want more detail. I've been very interested in adding a ribbon mic to my stable but they're expensive so I've been taking my time waiting for the right deal to come along. So you like the Se X1? It has gotten my attention, I was looking at Royers but the results you're getting speak for themselves. May have to invest in one soon! I'm just gonna go ahead & copy your whole rig, that cool with you?🤦‍♂️

I love attenuators, but I'll let you in on a secret: - They can't really get your amp ultra quiet enough for true bedroom level - These days, I prefer a good overdrive pedal. So much easier to dial in an work with. Also, there's so many out there that emulate famous amp overdrives that you can have a tweed, vox, marshall, or blackface :-)

@@EricHaugenGuitar What kind of " tweed" style overdrive ?
@123rwt123
@123rwt123 7 лет назад
Hey Eric, Do you use any overdrives / boost with this? I like to run mine on edge but I'm having a hard time finding a pedal for pushing it without getting muddy. I'm thinking maybe treble booster?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
Yeah that can be tricky! These days, I'm playing small venues with good PAs, so I rarely take the amp past 4 on the bright channel - so it's never actually on it's edge-of-breakup. I use a Strymon Deco as my main overdrive (you can hear it in just about all of my videos), but have had good luck with the Pul C. Timmy and the Ibanez ts808s. I play single coils, so a treble booster is a bit too much for my guitars, but might work perfectly if you've got humbuckers! Also, I used to use an Xotic RC Booster and that was quite good as well.
@curtisbarrett2243
@curtisbarrett2243 7 лет назад
ryan thorne I also have a 5F4 circuit that I'm running through a 1x15. I jump the channels (both volumes set for the room and final tone tweak...usually both around halfway), run the treble almost the hole way up (since after halfway it's basically a drive knob), bass at just under halfway (the same reason as above), presence off (because mine tends to scoop the mids out for the extra signal to the treble frequencies) and it's fairly dirty. OD and full range/clean boosts don't work at the settings at all because of that mud your hearing. I do however use a DIY modified Rangemaster pedal that uses a knob in place of the switch that most boutique builders use so I can specify where in the upper mids I'm boosting (since Rangemaster is an upper mid-range boost+bass cut). I find that straight into the amp is a great platform with all the rhythm dirt I need with clean on the guitar volume and the upper mid boost+bass cut of the Rangemaster hits the amp just right (for me) to give me a gain boost without being muddy and a perceived volume boost (since those upper mids are really pushing by that point). I use these same settings with my strat, Tele, P90 SG, and bucker 339. Sorry that was so log and verbose but maybe some of it was helpful. Good luck in your tone quest

This is an amazing video. Your amp and playing sound incredible. I have a 5F11 Vibrolux I just built. I’m looking to get some earlier breakup. What were your thoughts on how soon the eminence vs greenbacks vs he Weber break up? Also what do you have in your deluxe?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 6 лет назад
Thanks man! I've toyed with getting a 5F11 myself - seems like the perfect studio amp! I love Weber Alnicos the most - I think they have the woodiest character, and aren't too bassy. I have them in my tweed pro and deluxe. For earlier breakup, my tech says to play with the gain stages inside the circuit itself. Speakers, Pickups, and Tubes all effect it somewhat, but if you're looking for a more dramatic shift, you may have better luck poking around in the tone stack :-)
@MrGuitarfreak132
@MrGuitarfreak132 6 лет назад
Eric Haugen thanks so much for the response! I’m going to look into modding it for the option of more gain. I think it could be as simple as adding a switch to disconnect the negative feedback going to the second preamp tube and add a bypass capacitor to the cathode of that tube to increase gain. I think in theory it would let me switch back and forth between the clean headroom of the 5F11 and the dirt of the 5E3. Looking at the schematics of the two amps then I think the main difference at that point in the signal path would be the fixed bias vs cathode bias of the power tubes. How much that plays into power tube distortion I’m not sure. Anyway thanks for your response. I think I’ll get a Weber alnico.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 6 лет назад
Cool! That just might be the ticket! I know that on my pro, my guy pointed out tat in the original circuit there's all this gain attenuation built into the tone stack. The tweed bassman doesn't have that, so he messed with the tone stack to make it more like that. The other option would be to get a weber mini mass - a great way to drive the heck outta your tubes without making your ears bleed :-)
@MrGuitarfreak132
@MrGuitarfreak132 6 лет назад
Eric Haugen thanks! I’ll look into the tone stack and I think you’ve talked me into definitely getting the mini mass. Have you considered doing a demo of your deluxe?

Congrats in advance! The mini-mass is so useful! My 5E3 lives at my teaching studio in town - I gotta bring it home and shoot some vids with it. It's great too. Clean, it sounds a lot like the 5F4, but a little more compressed, less glassy. Once you get it halfway up, it's classic ZZ Top tone for days.

is that the 50watt variation, or the 30watt 15A150 ? and any surround dope ? .. i am thinking about just one speaker option, ( the standard no option "stock speaker" ), for the EPS Tube Stack... and leaning toward the Alnico Blue Dog 15 ( 8ohm, no dope ) ...* but i don't know where it will start going into cone modes* ...so wondering if you could sort of explain at what un-attenuated volume, ( 7,8,9,10 ) you start hearing early breakup cone modes ? ( if you can hear them merging into your pre-amp crunch ) cone modes are hard to explain... cone modes are like notch filtering in a drum head type harmonic series.

Tweed Pro should be pushing more than 20 watts. More like 35-40 watts. 5f4 and 5e5-a circuits are indeed almost the same, with the biggest difference being different amounts of negative feedback and the speaker. Never got to try one but I'm sure they're real nice. Just did some googling and it looks like they're 2 6L6s, but fixed biased, which would make it punchier than a tweed deluxe. Depending on how loud the band is, and what speaker you put in it, it might be just the right volume:crunch ratio!

Eric Haugen care to explain "fixed bias" ? Not familiar with that. 210 is the typical speaker config for vibrolux's. Very punchy.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 лет назад
I'm no electricity expert, but it's been explained to me that you've got two kinds of bias for the power tubes: Cathode Bias or Fixed Bias. The tweed deluxe and the old vox ac15 are cathode bias - this means two things - 1- you don't have do adjust the bias when changing power tubes, and 2 - the amp tends to be more responsive and dynamic, although so many other parts of the circuit can be attributed to that. Fixed Bias Amps tend to be higher power (like my 5F4), can require bias adjustment when changing tubes, and tend to be a little bit cleaner and punchier. Silverface Fenders are fixed bias. Here's a link about it from my favorite guitar forum:www.tdpri.com/threads/cathode-vs-fixed-bias.25290/
