yeah it's *totally* because of socialism it's like that... that's why poverty dramatically decreased and housing increased in the soviet union and now quality of life has decreased incredibly in russia since the break up of the USSR. i've lived in harbin which is still basically soviet and find it way more interesting and fun than back home.

Honestly. When people treat the USSR and things like that as an aesthetic it really irks me. I was born after the fall, but I still saw the effects it had. I am so very grateful I did not live then. And I have much respect to those who survived it. They love to say that they love the "Brutal Aesthetics" but do they love the way that 100 millions of people were killed? I find that to be quite brutal. The cities is what I assume they mean, yet I do not see an aesthetic in rushed quick built cities and housing blocks that were never meant to last. Anyway, the way these people will tend to simple brush off the facts you tell them of the USSR and its murders is terrifying. My small rant is done. Buildings are gone, people are gone, everything is gone, except for a dark, cold, odd sky that seems to be a mix between a deep orange and purple. You sit, with a lit cigar in your hand, pondering what life was like. You don’t even remember what original cigars were like anymore. You take a puff, and go back... You remember your family, your friends... everyone you held dear. You remember how everything seemed to be going alright. Your country was winning. You were close to taking the capital. You saw it on the news, on the debriefs after every mission: massive advances, opposing forces annihilated and various other things that basically guaranteed their downfall. You had just graduated Special Forces training and you were already sent on several missions. The first few were disorienting but you got the hang of it pretty quick. You went on secret missions. You took down parts of the hierarchy no one even knew existed. You and your teammates almost saved the planet. Almost. And then they launched. One after another. You don’t even know how such a weak force got their hands on those weapons. You heard sirens and alerts to make your way to the nearest city bunker. The noises, the screams and the pitches of every siren flood back and slightly overwhelm you. With your extreme physical prowess, you quickly make it into the bunker just in time. You get in, and as the seemingly last civilian is running in, the other guards scream and say that they’ve reached maximum capacity. They force the door shut, and you watch the poor man get burned and obliterated right before your eyes. You see his skin set on fire, while banging on the window, begging to be let in. “No, no. He’s gone. Nothing I can do now,” you think to yourself. Everyone else who made it in were almost all dead anyway. Starvation, disease, crime, dirty water occasionally - all rampant factors that, in the end, killed almost everyone you knew. You were alone. You pondered the good times. The situation in the bunker was bad. Very terrible times. You aren’t supposed to be outside because of radiation sickness and cancer, but you don’t care. You have nothing to live for. Everything you have is gone. Thankfully, due to your position in the military, you had some pretty good and safe quarters and it was fairly spacious considering the situation. You got prioritized over others when it came to food, ammo and resources, so your room was well stockpiled with things constantly. You can almost see yourself laying in your bed, staring at the empty one across from you. Looking at the same boring ceiling for the billionth time. You were meant to have shared your flat with someone else, but the other person had died a long time ago. Assaulted, in the halls, like so many other countless souls. You snap back to reality and try to find reasoning, but there’s nothing left. So you take in your surroundings one last time for the day, take one last puff from your cigar and put it out. You get up and walk back. As you make your way back to the bunker, through the decontamination chamber, you come across a small girl shouting for help. You look and examine her through the chamber windows. A hoodie, a ragged skirt, a pair of rain boots far too big to be hers, messy, unkempt hair and a dirty, old teddy bear. A man, who seems to have an odd attitude and ulterior motives approaches her. He tries to grab her by the arm and you hear him say the spine-chilling words, “I like ‘em young.” You run outside the chamber before the doors are even finished opening, get a pipe you sought out before on the floor, run out and crush his head open. He falls. Blood splatters all over you and the girl. As he drags out a bloodied hand reaching for the shin of the little girl, you pull out a pistol and double-tap him. You quickly became desensitized to this kind of stuff after spending a little in the lowest pits. The small girl, seemingly unbothered by the sight of blood and gore, looks up to you and thanks you. She asks you if you have a place to stay, that her parents had passed and she was looking for anyone to help her. You wondered how desperate she was if she was really going around asking any random stranger for shelter. This was her lucky day. You say yes, and you lead her to your room. You let her have her own side of the quarters, with the dusty unused bed and the neglected bathroom. She devours almost everything in your fridge. You can feel the old, dry, emotionless face of yours slowly open up into a smile. It’s almost as if you can hear the skin cracking open to form it. You finally have purpose now. Your reason to exist and your mission to complete: _Keep the girl safe._
