I have expanded into a second 104HP row of Eurorack. You always need a bigger case and the time has come to break out of one row. In this video I'll show you the modules I chose and how you go about expanding from one row to two.

I know that others have remarked upon this before, but I truly love your "I dunno" sort of approach to things. "Let's give it a go," all that sort of stuff. I find it particularly suited to the topic at hand, but I also think that the world at large would benefit from a large percentage of humans adopting more of that approach, in general. When I was 18, I was smarter than everyone. Now that I'm 46, I finally know what Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy was talking about when he said, "All I know is that I don't know nothing." It actually makes things a lot easier.

I'm loving the "journey" you're taking us on! I'm also enjoying the fact that you are "winging" it. Which I feel is the way it will be for me, when I finally make that leap of faith! The problem is, is that the kit I already have is all very "secure" and "safe!" I just love synthesis and if I had lots of money I'd go the safe way of buying a Moog modular, but that's never going to happen, so the euro rack system it will be! I will keep watching and learning and when I do jump, hopefully you and you lot out there, will be jumping with me!

I recommend getting a RYO Ampmix as well. It's a 4 channel mixer but each channel can be a standalone attenuator/amplifier or if nothing is plugged into a channel input its output becomes a cv source. So at the same time you can have channel 1 acting as a cv source, channel 2 working as an attenuator and channel 3+4 being mixed together. I have 2 in my system and they are my most used mixers. You can get them as DIY or premade. They are super easy to build even easier than the Turing I think. If you come to Berlin you are welcome to play on my huge system and I can help get you more comfortable with DIY stuff because if you really want to get into eurorack for cheap you need to source your own parts and not just buy kits. Also I build cases here so let me know if you want to get a bigger custom case with power in the future.

+1 for Rosie. I too was skeptical that I needed more than an attenuator, but the Rosie has so much functionality. I am always using the crossfade and send functions, and the headphone jack is SUPER useful for motivating a quick play when I have a few minutes. For mixers, I settled on a 2hp mixer and a couple of makenoise VCA's which do the same trick of being 3 channel mixers that can cascade into each other.

12:00 O'tool is one of my favorite modules. It's kind of a set of instructions. I'm constantly finding myself creating mental pictures of what is happening, and then when I scope something on the tool, I am always surprised by how far off I was about something.

The Transient Modules 2M is a nice pair of 3-channel mixers in 6hp. I use it all the time. It's not truly stereo (no panning, for example), but I use it constantly in my stereo setup, with some crafty patching. It's also pretty darn cheap.

You don't need to keep all your modules in the rack at all times. The o-tool can be an occasional visitor to give clarity now and then. If you change your rack around, new possibilities will surface without you having to plan them out beforehand.

This is true - hence the Knurlies :) Although taking them in and out is a faff - and it's always the faff that stops me from making music.

That's exactly where I am -- too many modules, not enough rack HP. But it's easy enough to swap them in and out in a couple of sections of my rack(s) where variation is natural. I'm trying very hard not to add more rack space. I find I enjoy a "smaller" system in interesting ways.

I should also say again that I have found your videos about creating a workable modular system really inspiring. I want to make that leap but am not sure if I'm ready yet...my finances are stretched enough as it is! I hastily went for a pico output taking into account the stereo capabilities and low HP. Thinking the Rosie might have been a better option now considering all the additional functionalities.

It's shameful that I've been playing piano and keyboards for almost fifty years (Yamaha SY-1 anyone?) and never really appreciated the basic blocks and interactions of the VCO, VCF, LFO, VCA etc. I suppose I like others just dove in without thought (reading manuals) and twiddled. Although intellectually I understood the basic electronic building blocks, this series has helped crystallise things for me. I can now actually get sound out of my ancient 'Synthedit' software. I also belatedly understand the excitement when the u741 op-amp came out. Quite revelatory really. I'm off to delve into the bowels of my moXF6. :-)

Hey Robin, did you get rid of the Clouds? I don't see any videos in the playlist where you covered its feature set. I've found that it was discontinued so the one you have there is difficult to come by. However, they have clones called uClouds that are smaller than the original w/additional features. I'm trying to figure out how it works via VCV Rack atm...probably have to watch a tutorial.

Hi, stumbled into your shed while looking at skiff ideas for my DFAM...which is sort of similar to the motehr in some ways, so if you were putting a DFAM in a skiff what other modues would you chuck in at the end..(about 44 HP to play with I think)..any thoughts?

@mike.thomas
@mike.thomas 6 лет назад
Ah, yes. I'd forgotten you have one! It has a quantized Turing Machine mode, too. And I think you have a mark IV? Has a sample player, too, and for that the card slot in the front is a boon. Put some drum samples in there, and you have another drum module. I was up late last night just playing with MI Tides and Warps. This stuff is so much fun.

KMix shouldn't distort with Eurorack level. You may find that your signal into the pico DSP is too hot.
@MoltenMusicTech

It does if the trim is too high. I'm just finding it all a bit fussy to get right and stay right so something built into the system that gives me a controllable output seems like a wise idea to me.

@SouthpawShorts

oooh they’re separate racks, right.
@MoltenMusicTech
@MoltenMusicTech 6 лет назад
Yeah, it's like it would be possible to pass a flying bus cable to the next row but it would involve either an untidy pass through the front or a dodgy bit of case cutting behind the scenes. Also, i like the idea of being able to easily seperate them for transportation or running them individually.

1 row power 40 can power both those rows....
@MoltenMusicTech
@MoltenMusicTech 6 лет назад
Yes it can, but how do you pass those cables through... do you hack into the case, do you pull ribbons out the front and back in the front of the other row? Deciding to build this one row at a time has its disadvantages, but it's what I decided to do. Also i like the idea that I can use a row by itself it i wanted - take a row to a synth meet rather than the whole lot, etc. So...
@apparently_sonam
@apparently_sonam 6 лет назад
Knew exactly, that would be your points for defence..Sure you can do all of those things, but will you?? Obviously the first case wasn't enough by your words not mine. I have a moog skiff as part of my setup and yes with the right drill, making a hole for power or ribbon feed is a real possibility. All your money and trip, so wish you well to figure it all out.

Ed Random - Too much money? No, definitely not. Modular requires a lot of trial and error and also costs money, and it's worth every freakin' penny IMO. There is no reason to knock people for buying cool gear. Even though I agree Robin will eventually put that Mother 32 back in its own case, there is no reason to be rude about it!
