I love that you reminded her she had cute backpacks at home and she didn’t need to blow her money on the new expensive backpack. I think it’s so important to teach kids to appreciate what they have and not always looking for the next new thing.

We used to go “back to school” shopping in March, when jeans, sweaters, etc were all on sale. We didn’t cut the budget, it just meant they got more stuff for the same amount of $$$.

When I was growing up my maternal grandmother would measure me, then take me shopping. We'd go to the basement of the Los Angeles Broadway store. All the craft and sewing stuff was there. She'd pick our some patterns and let me pick out material. She'd then set to work making me a new school wardrobe. In this days we couldn't wear pants. So she'd make me skirts, blouses, jumpers and dresses. Lots of dresses!!! I was the envy of all my girl classmates!!!

I commend you for teaching your kids how to budget and let them make decisions! I personally was NOT taught how to budget until I was an adult because my parents just bought me whatever I wanted. I was an only child and it worked for my family but that's not a good way to live 😕 So my goal is to live a frugal and minimalist life

Priya is hilarious!! She’s a great model and oh my word at the high heels she held up. Great life lesson letting the kids handle their own money. My oldest carried the same book bag from pre-k- 11th grade so that he could spend his money on something else. I stitched that book bag up so many times but it was an awesome bag.

Those were the days. I love that the kids are learning how to shop by themselves as it'll help them prepare for the real world in the future. Here's a trick with clothes shopping: hit up the consignment stores. I went to one in my town a couple of years ago because I needed shorts, and I was able to find a pair of Merona shorts (a former Target brand that I loved) and a pair of St Johns Bay capris with drawstrings on the legs (which I removed afterwards), both in great condition, for less than $10 total. It can be hit or miss at times but it's worth doing, especially with the cost of things going up constantly.

I've learned that you can save a lot of money if you wait to buy a lot of these at the end of September when the fall clothes, backpacks etc go on sale. Of course, this only works if you have enough from last year to get through a few weeks, but kids don't actually need a brand new backpack on day 1 if last year's bag didn't fall apart
@kac725
@kac725 2 года назад
Agreed, I make my kids use their back packs for 2 school years. I also buy them new shoes and supplies before school and go clothes shopping in September.
@seadragon1456
@seadragon1456 2 года назад
Yeah. The American culture pressures parents into buying brand new every school start. If your kids aren’t looking decked out in NEW clothes then you’re failing. I personally don’t care but I know many that care about the appearance of their children on the first 1-2 weeks of school. Of course children should look and smell nice (no lingering BO) but I think it’s overboard buying brand new every year. I buy new supplies and new shoes. Most of their clothes are in great condition and nobody would notice what’s new and what’s not.
@racheltheshadesoforange8700
@racheltheshadesoforange8700 2 года назад
@@seadragon1456 exactly. Like I'm all for giving my child what he needs, but I think there is the consumerist assumption that new years = new everything instead of what needs replacing.

We live in Germany. Smaller kids are getting a backpack, which is called "Ranzen", it is super sturdy, they are wearing it for 4 years, which is elementary school in Germany. "Ranzen" are very expensive, they can cost up to 250$. You get sports bag, 2 pencil cases, big and small, sometimes even a water bottle & snackbox. The good thing is, kids are learning how to take care of their stuff and not to by everything new every year, if it is still in good condition.

I love how you do this. I always had a strict budget when my 3 boys were in school (in the 90’s haha) because we were living paycheck to paycheck. There was no extra money. So if they wanted more than what I could pay for example shoes, they paid the extra. They all had paper routes (again….it was the 90’s 😄) made some money and had to save half and they could spend the other half on whatever. Good job mom🌞🌞🌞🌞

My kids only get one backpack for elemantary school, and one for higschool (here we have only one school from after elementary untill graduation). And no, they can't chose them completely by themselves. No special brand names, nor from tv shows, movies,.... They have to be plain, so that way it lasts for years. Same for lunch boxes, pencil cases,.... All the rest of the school supplies I buy myself. That saves so much more money.

My youngest is going into 7th grade and he truly doesn’t have much he needs this year other than some new pencils, notebooks, and things like tissues and Clorox wipes. There have been years where we could barely afford their supplies and clothes. If someone is truly struggling there is always resale shops or even dollar stores that have new supplies. That being said if you are one that does have extra money buy extra!! We have also done that when we had extra money and given the supplies to the class for kids who came with nothing.

Target is expensive, I never shop there unless I have a gift card. Utilise second hand stores or thrift stores, especially for kids clothes since they outgrow them so fast. Buy a couple nice outfits new so your kids don’t feel deprived, but play clothes, jammies, and gently worn/like new school clothes can be purchased from thrift shops and your kids will still look put together and nice. I come across name brand gold quality kids clothes all the time at second hand stores because kids outgrow them so fast that parents donate them often. I don’t see much mention of thrifting on this channel, which is a shame because it’s the smartest thing a mom can do to save a buck. Even for home stuff and our own clothes as well. If you must buy brand new, buy a season ahead, so when summer stuff goes on sale in the winter you buy a size larger for the upcoming summer. Same for all seasons.

You and Bubba are such good parents! You are teaching your children good habits!! So many teenagers that work at fast food here cannot give you back change if the register messes up or they accidentally put in the wrong price. This happened to me recently at McDonalds and it was less than a dollar and so easy. I told them how much she owed me but they had to get on the phones' calculator and figure it. When it showed I was right, she said, "You are so smart!" I don't know what the schools this day teach, but it sure isn't how to count money back to a customer. I learned that in elementary school many many years ago!!

I see where you're coming from and that it was a funny quip but just a little reminder: working fast food is exhausting and the brain fog is not to be sniffed at! ❤️ (And the boss they had on that day might be one of those "any excuse to yell at the employees" type bosses so they might not have been able to take your word for it even if they wanted to!) Most people aren't stupid they're just tired ❤️🙏
@rachelphelps6347
@rachelphelps6347 Год назад
@@anna-maymoon1001 I know that working fast food can be exhausting. These girls were not exhausted, believe me. I never meant to imply that they are stupid. I just think the basic things of life are not being taught anymore like they should be. I have heard that some schools don't even teach kids to write cursive. I suppose one thing that might cause this is that schools allow kids to use calculators to figure these things and so they aren't really using their minds. Back in my day we never had that and it was all done working it out on paper and using your brain. Makes a big difference in the learning process. I certainly don't think that the people working there are stupid and didn't mean to imply that at all.❤

This is a great idea! I do most of our shopping online for deals but I think I will try including my 8&10 yr old sons into the shopping experience though they are particular with clothes or school stuff yet. They both have LLbean lunch boxes and backpacks so we do t need to buy yearly - my older son is using his for the 6th year and they still look great.

Great job! We got that same tie dye backpack last year online through Macy’s for $19 in May. For some things off-season can you get you more for your money. Another great money lesson for the kids to learn.

Great idea with the shopping to teach the kids. They are growing so fast. They are so like " little adults" lol. Thanks for sharing.

I’m over here wondering if Priya got the tie dye backpack. My son carried the same LLBean backpack from 3rd grade-HS. Great video!

Jordan, I've been binge watching all of your RU-vid videos while I've been deep cleaning my house this fall, will you have a new video coming out soon?
