The grille shutters are (supposedly) for aerodynamics... they can also function as you stated but Rams have the same thing and the primary purpose is to improve aerodynamics at highway speeds.
The trust you can see gavins sister has in him and his driving is awesome imo. My little brothers are the same way when they're driving with me but as I get older and mature I've settled down a lot. Just think it was really cool to see something so simple and relatable

Ford actually has a recall for the grill fins. where it would cause an under hood fire, you had to take a few of those fins out and cut holes in the under-cover, it was for the 2020+ escapes.

In the beginning those where the active grille shutters they are electronically controlled by an engine control module, the shutter is located between the grille and engine radiator. The shutter automatically opens when the engine needs cooling to maintain the ideal engine operating temperature, and closes when it doesn't.
The thing is, the F-150 is such a refined truck it's a pleasure to drive normally, add some boost and hang on, those Coyotes haul ass. I love my 2012 5.0 F-150 as much as the day I bought it.
So not that it really matters, but figured I'd let you know the grill shutters are for aerodynamics. They close at highway speeds to reduce drag from air getting caught up in the engine bay, and open at low speeds to increase airflow and aid in cooling. Just thought you might want to know! The active grill is more for MPG, as it changes the airflow into the engine bay allowing for optimal cooling and optimal aero. By forcing the airflow to move around the truck rather than thru it, they effectively reduced the drag significantly. You will notice a decent drop in hwy mpg. But Hank is about smiles per gallon, not miles per gallon. And it seems he is plenty of SPG, so MPG became irrelevant.
You absolutely have to put a bumper sticker or a vinyl, on the back side of the truck that says you've just been hanked! So you have to get vanity plates that says Hank!
