How is it possible that the Port Authority of Baltimore allows a 300 meter long ship carrying more than 10,000 containers to sail without tugboats with the obstacle of a bridge built and designed for ships to pass through in the 70s? >>>> Here you can see how from the port of Mugardos (SPAIN) where I work, a gas carrier with a capacity of 150,000 cubic meters and 300 meters in length is supported at all times by 4 tugboats from more than 4 nautical miles at least to access an estuary whose narrowest point of the channel measures the same as the span of the Baltimore Bridge through which the container ship crossed. It's not a question of money, it's a question of something simpler: SECURITY. And this is how we do it in Spain -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p1nlAoFBWWw.html

weren't the columns of the bridge protected against impacts? A few months ago there was a similar incident in Argentina, Parana river, one of the largest rivers in the world. A big cargo lost power and was carried by the current directly to one of the columns of the huge and busy Zarate-Brazo Largo bridge (made of concrete). But the columns are surrounded by massive concrete protections, so the ship finally hit one of these protections, opening a hole on the bow, but the bridge was safe

Those container ships can do a lot of damage, especially when loaded with cargo containers, but it seems like poor bridge design when hitting one support point collapses the entire bridge so easily. It wouldn't hurt to have some sort of underwater barriers on both sides that prevent large vessels from approaching the bridge except in the area meant to be used to pass under the bridge would prevent the bridge from being hit. The point where ships pass under the bridge could have bumper barriers that would prevent ships from straying side to side and clipping one of the supports as it passes through. Also, a warning system that would alert the ship's captain and crew, and another warning system for the traffic on the bridge that would allow them sufficient time to get off of the bridge would help towards preventing loss of life.

The idea that you can just switch "the power" on and off like flicking a switch is pretty funny. Also the idea that the lights are on the same circuit as the control gear is pretty funny. It did. Small ones. If you look carefully, you can see the bow of the ship impacting them (look starboard on the bow, near water line) and just utterly pulverizing them, then moving right through b4 hitting the main support pier. There was also apparently a small support pier for an electric transmission line paralleling the bridge that the ship plowed through b4 hitting the bridge pier. 100,000 tons moving 10 knots is a lot of energy.

@jimbobeire

They didn't have to send officers very far at all. Remember those construction workers who died, working on potholes? You see the flashing orange lights of their vehicles near one of the pillars? When construction takes up a lane of the road, transit cops enforce a speed restriction for safety. So there was already a transit police unit at each end of the bridge. So... not really surprising that they could quickly stop more vehicles from entering the bridge.

Throwing it in reverse? The speed dropped from 8.7kts to 7.5kts, so it wasn't full throttle _ahead_ . Plus, they dropped the port anchor, which would be consistent with trying to stop the yaw to starboard.

It was a continuous truss design, not a cantilever. The load of the road deck was spread across multiple spans, and with one span removed, the others were unbalanced.

Basic physics. Hold out your finger, take a ruler, and place it on your finger so the middle of the rule is on your finger. Notice how it's balanced. Now move it so your finger 90% of the way over to one side. Notice how it falls off. That's the basic principle here.

How they let cargo ships go through that opening with no tugs is crazy. I know every time I have been in Charleston, SC port the ships are escorted by two tugs until they have cleared the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge on the Cooper River. In the video this ship is putting out a good amount of smoke so the engines were running, but I guess they may have lost the ability to control the ship.
@blazinrounds230
@blazinrounds230 Месяц назад
They lost engine power. We’re able to temporarily restore it and put the ship in full reverse, hence the smoke. Why would they use tugs. This is a wide open navigable waterway. What do you want them to do have every ship out of here escorted to open water with tugs. Do you have any idea how many tugs you would need to escort every ship in and out of Baltimore?

Bridges built these days are engineered to minimise the damage resulting from such collision events. This bridge was constructed before those design elements were implemented and had not been upgraded to the revised engineering standards. However, there may have been systemic failures regarding the Ship's maintenance and crewing practices (e.g. well being, fatigue etc).
