+Macey David I assume your translation is far more accurate, but the "translation" that jevalles posted is the lyrics for American choirs that don't want to try to sing in French. :D

+Macey David +Nate Alexander "se recommander a" is used in a number of idiomatic expressions, different meanings by Ile de France francophones and others by Swiss speakers of French, etc. It can mean "appeal to", "ask a favor of", "depend on", "recommend", etc. Also, it's not all that clear who is suffering, "mon coeur" or "vous". Nor is it clear who was jealous, nor exactly how this led to separation. By the last phrase there is a third agency who pronounced banishment on the speaker, but it is not clear if it was specifically banishment from a person's presence or a place. Finally, we are looking at French from the Renaissance, not Modern French, so there are changes of phrasing and meaning involved there, too. So take your pick. One thing that can "recommend" the traditional English lyrics which are reproduced here is the coherency of meaning, rhyme, and meter. If you are going to sing a set of lyrics in English to this piece, this commonly sung text rolls off the tongue well, and fits the music charmingly. If any traditional English lyric needs fixing badly, it's the one used for The Animals Sing Counterpoint (Contrapunto Bestiale alle Mente) by Adriano Banchieri. If you want to attack THAT one, I'm ready!

Russell Robinson of Alfred Publishing translates the piece to: "I give to you all of my heart, though it is filled with pain and sorrow. Though there are those who want you still. Now I shall bid you a fine farewell." Thought I'd bring it up because this is what we sing in our school choir. And it's underwhelming compared to yours. Sad.

One of my favorites from my H.S. choir days...i would love to have sung it in French, but it didn't come together in French so our director settled for us learning it well in English!
