Mona Eltahawy, a prominent feminist in the Arabic-Muslim world, talks to us about sources of oppression for women - the state, the street and the home - and how the feminist struggle should not focus on attaining equality, but on destroying the patriarchy. Her first book, "Headscarves and Hymens", has recently been translated into Spanish by Capitán Swing, and we’ve taken advantage of her visit to the recent Kosmopolis Festival to learn more about her deeply intertwined thoughts and experiences.

Patriarchy rules our implicit biases, and the core of our belief system. So you can create laws for how people are to behave towards one another, but until people become aware of their deepest beliefs or shift their beliefs, nothing will change. Oppression, competition, hate mistrust, fear will continue because that is the essence of the patriarchy. That's how they keep the people conditioned to their social roles. True freedom exists only beyond the patriarchy. Why are so many afraid of freedom?

Because they are afraid of losing their superiority. To them superiority is the upmost important thing they have ever known. They cannot let it go....If they do, it means admitting to their mistakes and insults. Freedom's second name is accountability, because there is no one else to blame anymore.

Out of the last 500 years, Britain had female rulers for over 250 years in total. Some of those Lady monarchs ruled over the British empire that had control over the entire planet. And during that time, the British empire put in the foundations for all of the western countries including, New Zeland, Australia, Canada, USA, isolated islands in the Caribbean and it also influenced or dominated countries like India, most of Africa and parts of Europe. In other words the Patriarchy they are so hell bend in fighting is in fact a Matriarchy. It is the snake that eats it's own tail... Queen Elizabeth the first and Queen Mary were in power in the 1500s, arguably at the height of the British empire But yes after them we get Queen Anne that was in power at the 1700s at the decline British empire. I am just irritated with the ignorance of people some times, It is not like we didn't have female rulers in the past. And everybody knows Cleopatra. Nero's Mother from the Roman empire could make the list of the top ten most ruthless and evil rulers of history.

There's a misconception here that these ideas are patriarchal in nature. White supremacy isn't borne of male-to-male systems of power, it's borne of tribalism, and tribalism borne of an instinct of protection. Capitalism is borne of trade, which everyone has participated in, and it's not the fact that most CEO's are male that we have problems with capitalism, it's the fact that there is corruption and a lack of accountability, which has nothing to do with patriarchy. Homophobia is borne of religious teaching, or othering, which can and is done by everyone, and wasn't brought about because of male-to-male power structures. Then there's the fact that patriarchy: a system that channels ownership and power through male lines only, is actually not the legal baseline in most of the west. Inheritance laws send assets to next of kin, which is the partner, or the family, be it children or relatives equally (estate.findlaw.com/wills/what-happens-if-i-die-without-a-will-.html). So there's no patriarchy there. There are discrimination laws in place that disallow discrimination in the workplace based on sex. Also not patriarchal. The most patriarchal system we have left in the west really, is last names, which people are still free to not take anyway. There really is no enforcement of any patriarchal ideals in the west, unless I've missed something. I'd say Saudi Arabia is a patriarchy, absolutely. But to call Australia, or England, or America patriarchal, I think is inaccurate, and that all the problems specified by Mona are the result of disparate problems that each require specific and unique answers. This is ridiculously oversimplified, and as a result, is highly inaccurate.

(oh how "liberal") This comes from the actual leftist/marxist/communist SUPREMACISTS who dominate most of Academia, TV & News, (thanks in large part to Free-Mason infiltration worldwide in the high echelons of UN, EU, Politics, Academia, Finance & Corporate boardrooms) and who also constantly attempt to censor, deplatform & dehumanize people with any opposing traditional, conservative views & opinions. (oh, again how "liberal" & "democratic") These radical leftist behave like (today's modern-day) victorian religious fanatics of the new academic religion/dogmas of intersectionality, which not only further ATTACK & DIVIDE (instead of unite or strengthen) society & our family units into many tiny vulnerable fractions, but also maintains the kind of political/social fighting & chaos ...which Leftist/Marxist/Comunists (NW0-Globalists) need to exist, in order to keep their political power.. If religion is in fact written by humans, then you're quite right. These religious texts were likely written by very sexist and patriarchal men in ancient times when this was more acceptable. The problem now is that the religion is what's left, not the authors of it. It's hard to wipe a nation of its traditions, even if they are inherently patriarchal and sexist in nature, but the sooner that happens, the better.

Sorry Mona. In a free liberal society NO set of ideas are above analysis & criticism. Pernicious ideas are not protected by blasphemy laws, or by the race, ethnicity, gender or religion of their holder. Ideas are not people. Analysing, challenging & criticising an ideology isn't persecution. It's critical thinking. In a free, liberal society you do not get to police who can & cannot discuss, criticise, challenge or advocate for or against Islam or feminism or "the patriarchy" or anything else. Just like you are free to share your opinions about Islam, feminism & patriarchy everyone else can too, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity or religion. Why is there such a thing as "the patriarchy"? Spiritually speaking (gender aside), matriarchal wisdom can begin with a fundamental understanding of the cyclical nature of reality (God). Represented by the snake in many creation myths, the living cycle has a trinity of a beginning (head), a middle and end (tail). As above so below, the sexes were created in the image of God's cyclical nature where Mother is the head and opening to all beginnings and Father holds the tail to all endings (through which the sowing of seeds allow for the next great matriarchal rebirth). The joining of the two (symbolized by the Ouroborus or the marriage ring) is the sacred union needed in assuring the creation and continuation of new life cycles. To speak of the present day God as "Our Father" is simply an admission to our collective positioning within the bigger cycle. As all mothers have direct experience with the creator quality of birthing, so is the direct experience of rebirthing the divinity within (baptism) belong to that which is spiritually matriarchal. (John 3, verse 3-8). Sekhmet statues (ancient Egyptian) carry most of their weight in symbolic memory of what was a mother culture dedicated to the direct experience of baptism. As the leg shaped hairlocks extend from maternal breasts to the womb of rebirth, the lioness's head proportions are such that they highlight the bust of a second animal figure. The Lioness's ears as eyes and eyes as nose (nostrils) brings to life the figure of a reptile. 'Neath the halo headress of the solar egg, the lioness's egg fertilization process being internal (Set) and the reptile's egg fertilization process being external (Setting), such being key components to the safety of entering the trans-egoic or "born again" state. The life threatening fear associated with the predatory nature of a lion and/or crocodile encounter are reflective of the intense ego death experiences associated with the transpersonal awakening process. In spiritually matriarchal times, illumination could be seen as wearing the false beard (ancient Egyptian funerary "ego" death mask) as the high state of cyclical self knowing; high awareness of both our upper matriarchal half and our lower (later) patriarchal half (compared with a mini lower body replica, an "as above so below" tail end beard extension); in full recognition of her civilizational Underworld, her inevitable cyclical destiny. The male pharaoh wears his beard tapered in reverse, indicating a pointing upwards towards the patriarchal head, divine representative of God's tail end cycle. Mary Magdalene's anointing and wiping of Jesus's feet with her hair can then be seen as head to tail (toe) imagery as she descends her matriarchal head to his patriarchal feet, thus reenacting the high understanding of the divine cyclical process. (John 12:3) To carry the Ankh was perhaps to symbolically carry that upper and lower understanding. As the upper matriarchal womb symbolised the fertile birthing of civilization, below, the now Christian cross is carried to place emphasis on the lower (later) "End Times" Father principle of the great cycle. Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed Hindu diety, displays a cyclical head to trunk symbolism and points to the Mother head of his matriarchal elephant society. A whole temple was dedicated to the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor, who is the matriarchal "Uterus" personified. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J0m0zJSEFK0.html "See all women as mothers, serve them as your mother. When you see the entire world as the mother, the ego falls away. See everything as Mother and you will know God." - Neem Karoli Baba
