Kevin Monahan took the stand as the defense’s only witness in the driveway shooting trial. Monahan, who is accused of killing Kaylin Gillis, said he feels his “soul is dead” knowing that he took someone’s life.
The question of who was she and what was she doing on private property along with her uninvited companions? If this man did not perceive himself and his wife's safety to be under threat he would not have felt the need to put himself in the position of preparing to defend themselves.
Rather than calling out to the people he said he felt firing a gun was a legitimate way to "open a dialogue" and less inflammatory than speaking. (!?) His actions are so indefensible he decided to lie his azz off with hopes of swaying one juror. Ludicrous.
Please consider this? If you are on your own private property and a group of unknown people just shows up unannounced and without making their intentions clear, are you not going to get nervous yourself? I am not condoning the taking a life but one man that feels under threat and that has to potentially defend himself and his wife against multiple individuals? He has the right to defend himself if necessary, and please take note, I had specifically said "if necessary". This case should not be used as another excuse to disarm the people, they should be able to defend themselves when there is a threat against their lives.
With all due respect, are you a qualified medical professional in the field of psychology? If not, you are not qualified to diagnose anybody. Calling someone crazy and fanatical is uncalled for on this platform, they way you are referring to this man sounds very personal.
The United States is a very strange country, inhabited by people with strange values. I don't perceive a Christian attitude towards life, an "eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" view of Hebrew tradition prevails. I'd imagine if one watches certain media outlets and such, one could be very paranoid. Having lived in a pretty rural area, I've seen folks scared of their own shadows and prepared to shoot and kill over less. It's also why I don't live there anymore..
Lol who shoots a gun to start a dialogue right off the bat? This guy is a nutjob. Any normal person would have simply gone and asked if they were lost, or what was going on.
I have had someone get out of a car full of people amd walk up to my house with hands in pockets....people in car had me blocked i n. . Should i have assumed ill intent and opened fire? @@RoganBits
@@RoganBits Anyone turning around in my driveway would be blocking it. That's why I'd go for my phone in case I had to dial 911 and make sure the door was locked.
I don't get why a secluded home with a long driveway wouldn't have a gate with a no-trespassing sign on it? Especially with a guy this territorial. If he was so scared then why not call the police? Save the lethal force for someone actually trying to break into the house. Now he can have a secure prison cell with a very friendly cellmate. It will be a whole new world for him!
I seen a video that she did testify and was ruled a hostile witness. She claimed to not remember when questioned by prosecutor and her answers were rehearsed when questioned by the defense.
I feel like his wife came out best in this all. Can you imagine how annoying it must be to live with a dude who thinks people driving near him equals siege.
She mat have defended him out of fear. “What if he gets off? What if he gets a light sentence?” I imagine living with a trigger-happy paranoid hot head is frightening at some level.
Fox News Under The Guiding hands of Rupert Murdoch has severely damaged this country in far more ways than just politics. He's literally created a nation of paranoid psychotics who believe everyone is out to get them or rob them.

I'm glad to see that the comments reflect an attitude of failed responsibilty- instead of the delusional vision of the defendant. His own paranoid fantasies prompted him to take a life. That's not acceptable.
@ItsMotoMatt Matt tho that is true you have to take into consideration the specific situation. He is 30 50 ft or how ever far he was and from that great of a distance, he tripped on a nail and the gun went off and shot through the same target that he was aimed at. Plus he was elevated if anything it wouldn't of been spot on target. Why be so afraid,? If they entered his home then, only then, it's hunting season!
what a tragedy... she and her friends were going to a house party and simply turned down the wrong driveway, but what could they have mistaken the 'first' shot for if he did indeed fire a warning shot? 20 years old is way too young to be dead.
Firing a "warning shot" isn't even legal in the first place. The state law states that you will lose you gun license, and its in the manuals and training. New York has a robust Red Flag Law as well too. Monahan was a ignorant and dangerous gun owner. He didn't fear for his life. Monahan had a gun, and Monahan wanted to fire a gun.
He was looking for an excuse to kill someone, His neighbors said he usually drove too fast and never looked to the right or the left. They were worried that he'd hit someone sooner or later.
Didn't he initially state he was asleep when the car pulled into the driveway?? There was no mention of a motorcycle during his early interviews that I recall.
Nobody believes his version, especially the judge, who just sentenced him to life. "Oh, I tripped on a nail and the gun went off accidentally." Uh, huh.
@@321snoot especially since in another version he was asleep when they pulled in the driveway to turn around. I also find it interesting he heard the car from the top of his long driveway.

According to this idiot, shooting a warning shot is starting a dialogue? Yet, he later testifies, if he had verbally communicated with the people, it would have been worse? How does that make any sense? That's equivalent to saying, fighting solves everything but talking it out makes things worse. No rationale, no logic, and no reason for this guy to have owned a firearm. Very sad. I'm glad he's going to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
"I wanted them to give some indication what their intent was. The warning shot to me is almost like starting a dialogue, trying to initiate an action." So "Can I help you?" "Are you lost?" or even "Get the hell off my property!" was not a better option?
@@blueskysummit6153 I would have wondered why not an insanity plea. He'd go to a mental hospital but he'd have a better chance of getting past that alive, than this prison.
Monahan's testimony is whack, like the testimony of someone who has repeatedly visualized being the victim of a home invasion and sees that happening anytime cars come up his driveway. this testimony did not help his case at all.

I think this guy has spent too much time much time in the world of watching movies…he’s a fantasist, turned out to be a dangerous one who killed an innocent person. That Dan Levy character was incredibly biased it seemed to me.
Definitely a load of BS. This was clearly a fantasy he was trying to live out. Like something out of a movie. The plot essentially goes like this: "Peaceful man forced to defend his home in the woods from invaders." I guarantee that's the fantasy he had playing in his head.
If you're that scared, you don't go outside, you talk from inside the door and you ask what the person wants. If you fire a warning shot, you do it from the doorway as protection from returning fire. Shotguns aren't accurate over a long distance, it would be extremely unlucky to hit a person down the driveway by stumbling; you would have to aim. This varies with the gun and other variables. From Shooting Illustrated: "accuracy beyond 50 yards is poor".
if he was so worried about being under siege he could've installed a gate, they would have to opened to enter his driveway and maybe a sign with his name that way the kids could of known it was the wrong house.
All i can say is this is tragic, it’s an example of a pure lack of judgement and responsibility. Regardless of what story he concocted YOU are responsible for anything your fire arm does. Period. This guys defense was “My gun did it not me” ridiculous. Also yall check your state laws. In Texas if the property is clearly posted as no trespassing what he did would be legal. So you also have a duty to know where your going and make sure your where you are supposed to be. We all know what can happen in Texas when you go onto peoples property without permission. Everyone may not agree with it, and I am not saying it’s right, or ok to shoot someone for just pulling in into your driveway, I’m saying in some states it is legal to shoot someone just for being on your property if the right conditions are met

As a gun owner and 2nd amendment supporter, I've always believed that guns don't kill people. People do. And unfortunately, this is another irresponsible gun owner. No sign of a threat to bodily harm let alone his life. He fired a warning shot which almost always proves he was not in life threatening danger. That's an aggressive tactic and not a good look in court. You don't bring a gun to a fist fight... and you certainly don't bring a shotgun to a "non-combative" scenario. Holy sh17 😢 I can see myself in this scenario mentally knowing where my guns are with CELL PHONE in hand and 911 ready and peaking out my window like a crazy person... then laughing when they drive away and tell me why the hell they're here. Damn this is sad.
If you angrily rush out if your house with a gun, there's going to be some liability for accidents. The amount of recklessness that it takes to charge out and confront people like that...
