Judge Adam Michelini had some very strong words for Kevin Monahan, before sentencing him in the driveway shooting trial of Kaylin Gillis. Monahan was sentenced to 25 years to life, plus additional time for tampering with evidence.
My truck broke down across the street from some house once. The woman inside the house came out and yelled at me for half an hour to move my car, called me a criminal and accused me of trying to break into her house and then she called the cops on me. Some people are just unhinged sociopaths.
My car broke down and the home owner invited me into their house and made me a cup of tea and allowed me to wait on their sofa for the tow truck. It would never occur to me that someone would start shooting.
I had some crazy woman scream at me for trespass because I was weed eating a customer's driveway edge that bordered this sociopath neighbors' property by inches! She went nuts on me and called the cops..one of which was ready to arrest me if not for his reasonsble partner. That was 2015..and things are far more crazy now!
Someone broke down with a flat and pulled into my driveway. It was dark and drizzling outside. I got my jack and tools out and helped them put the spare on quicker. It was a local pizza delivery guy. I got a flat on a holiday weekend and it was a Sunday and I was hours from home. It was a tight back road and I rolled into a driveway. The guy whose driveway I pulled into helped and got his fire chief buddy to leave a cookout to come help out as well. Not everyone shoots people or goes crazy on you for pulling into a driveway.

The NRA is loath to recognize it, but the people in the “Wild West” understood the disaster that the prevalence of guns brings. That’s why they enacted laws reigning in firearms carry.

So this is tragic. Stay away from living in Northern wstern states. That I can speak to. There are many men like this out there. Many.
Lifetime gun owner and federal wildlife officer here. Owning and using a firearm is a responsibility. This coward failed at every opportunity. Should definitely be locked up, and lots of people should take notice.
Agree 100%, but I think there would be many in America still think this creep had the right to use his firearm, damn scary with so many people like this man with firearms.
I can remember getting lost one day driving through a rural area as a teenager. I turned down a long dirt driveway hoping there would be an area I could turn around at. There wasn't and I pulled up to a house and thought, "oh no, I don't want to be here." A few seconds later an angry dude came storming out of his house asking me what I was doing there. You know what he did next? It wasn't pulling out a gun and immediately opening fire. He showed me a place to turn around and guided me out. The defendant clearly was looking for an excuse to shoot somebody. This also shows how sick our society has become.
Hopefully it's a rare occurrence. I've been worried about using someone's driveway to turn around. I travel a lot of county roads. They're the two lane, no shoulder kind, with a 50 mph speed limit. You can either risk a collision, or risk getting shot. I think it's very rare that someone in America would shoot someone like that guy did. Other than Arizona. I think they just passed a law that says it's okay to murder trespassers if you think they're illegal immigrants (so, all brown people? Even though there are Bulgarian and Ukrainian immigrants crossing illegally too). Personally, I was turning around on a rural road and pulled up towards a guys house. The owner came out and said hi. Then, I saw a brick memorial he had built for his son (who had died in high school). It stuck with me because I was so afraid he'd call the cops or shoot me... But, his son had died, and he wasn't mad at the world for it. There wasn't anything I could do to help that father.
His family said he constantly listened to the network that had to pay almost a billion in fines for lying. He's one of the millions of gullible people who've been convinced they're going to be victims of some boogeyman. That innocent girl died because of it.
Most people shouldn't, most people panic at the slightest sign of danger. I don't trust most people with scissors, idk why we think the right to kill is God-given in this country.
I agree, and I think it makes sense that Kaylin’s boyfriend chose to sue Kevin’s wife Jinx for having a gun unsecured and readily available to her husband.
Welcome to America!!! Wait until these people start suing en masse... Then the laws will get changed real quick when money's involved! This is America 🙄🔫
You know it was deliberate by his attitude. Any normal person would have been freaking out, crying, apologizing. But i guess a normal person would not start shooting at random kids.
@@masonkanterbury3007 Exactly. He''s fairly old but if he had shown remorse and empathy he might have seen freedom before he died. I think his quasi vigilante attitude was caused by far right media both telling its viewers that hordes of violent criminals are comming for them and that they can be like the murderer vigilante George Zimmermann or the young punk murderer Killer Kyle Rittenhouse both of which got away with murder!
Can you imagine if everyone ran outside and started shooting every time someone accidentally entered the wrong driveway or used a driveway to turn around? Omg, most of us would be dead or recovering from gunshot wounds.
Seriously. I live on a dead end and it happens every day. Thank goodness I don't live in fear. No wonder he is indifferent to prison because he was already living in his own hell.
There have been quite a few similar cases. Remember the one where the teenager went to pick up his little brother and went to the wrong house and was shot and killed?
@@sunshinelizard1AND the woman in Florida who thought the grassy field next to her apartment was hers and hers alone! She openly harassed the kids that used it to play (the landlord even said it was communal land and most definitely NOT hers). She’d blast music in her truck in the middle of the night, cuss out kids and call them names, throw objects at them, and finally she stole an iPad from one of them. The mother went over to confront her about the harassment and to get the iPad back. She then shot and killed the mother in front of her children. Then claimed the “feared for my life” BS. She actually googled how to legally shoot people before. So basically she orchestrated the entire thing to draw the mother to her door because she thought she’d get away with it. I have a neighbor who apparently really hates people using their short private road and driveway to make a u-turn, he yelled at me once, but guess what he eventually did, he put up a cone and sign and that was the end of it.
I am a rideshare driver, and I am directed to the wrong driveway daily. I have had very angry people come out and asked me what I want. There have been some very tense situations and people need to relax and chill a little bit, before they decide to pull a weapon out.
America is crazy. I have people knock on my door for directions and I don't pull out a gun and start shooting. I don't even own a gun. My car broke down last year and the homeowner came out and offered to call the tow truck and invited me inside to grab a drink and some biscuits. Absolutely crazy that some nutjobs first response is to start shooting.
The judge was totally correct in all of the points he made. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve turned around in a driveway without a second thought. I’ll be thinking twice in the future!!
I remember I used to deliver groceries and I came to a customers house pretty late, dude turned off all his front lights n came out the dark. All he had to do was simply come out and approach her to ask the words, briefly, of "What are you doing here?" or "I think there's some sort of mistake", guided her correctly to which street her driveway was on and let both have an uneventful rest of the night. Instead, he chose to do the worst possible thing imaginable to all of them for no reason. Compliments to the judge in full for showing no mercy on him.
About a year ago, there was a minor accident in front of my house. The road is moderately busy and school was letting out of the high school about a half mile down the road. So, to avoid impeding traffic, the cars pulled into my longish, two-car-wide driveway to exchange information and such. I came out of my house to make sure they didn't need anything. They see me and started saying, "I'm so sorry, we'll leave!" I was like, "I'm just making sure no one is hurt. You're fine!" Seeing that one of the cars had a kindergarten-ish-aged passenger that the mother was trying to keep occupied during the long process, I brought out my kids and some sidewalk chalk to play with her. The people acted like I was uncommonly nice and I didn't get it. Apparently, not everyone does that kind of stuff...
Now he will have to keep vigil over the space outside his cell....Lord help anyone who hovers too long while passing...or worse yet that stops and turns around!
He was never worried about someone driving on his driveway. He intentionally didn't install a gate or a chain to set a trap for drivers who inadvertently drive on his driveway. He's been looking for an excuse to shoot someone in a long time. This is a pathetic attempt to disguise this shooting as a self-defense.
When it becomes unsafe to turn around upon making a wrong turn we’ve lost our ability to live in a society where we are not constantly afraid. This was intentional, and sickening. There simply is no excuse for his actions, or her death. I have no sympathy for the offender, but have the utmost sympathy for the victim, her family, and friends.
This judge really let him have it. His disgust with the defendant's lack of remorse was clearly felt, and he outlined the reasons eloquently. Say goodbye to EVER owning a gun again, Mr. Executioner.
A gun, nothing. He looks about 65, and he just got handed a thirty something year prison sentence. Nothing he ever "owns" is going to so much as have a sharp edge on it again. Or be more than like six feet from him.
Hia neighbors told the investigating detectives that he was known in the area as having a very short fuse, and was insanely angry if anyone even turned around at the far end of his very long driveway. These young people, drove up a ways, saw it was the wrong hous and had turned around when he shot at them FROM BEHIND
My friend's car broke down in front of this guy's house. He called his dad for help and we had the hood up so he could check the fluids and maybe figure out what the problem was. The guy came out of his house yelling about how we needed to get back into the car and leave. Was the longest 20 minutes waiting for his dad to come tow the car. All while the guy yelled about calling the cops and that we needed to get away from his property or else. Some people are just nuts. A considerate person would have asked if we needed help. Not this guy, how dare we end up parked along side the road in front of his house.
Yep. My girlfriend's car stalled in front of someone's house one time with us both in the car, and some dude immediately came running out of his house with one hand up and a pistol in his other hand. I immediately came out with my hands up and told him we're having car issues and will leave as soon as we can. He said "alright" and went back into his house. People are EXTREMELY unpredictable, especially in the south.
Either he really still thinks his lawyer is going to get him out of it somehow, or he just needs some time for it to really hit him. The good news is he's about to have a lot of time, so that's not going to be a problem.
I have a neighbor that’s very hostile to most people being anywhere near his property so he’s the reason I would avoid using anyone’s driveway to turnaround. This situation is just so messed up
There is a guy like that who lives near me. But he also has signs out the butt all over his driveway entrance. As cleanly and clearly marked as you can get.
I was a gun owner, years ago in my early twenties. Looking back there was a couple times I can remember where I realize I did not have proper respect for the power of a weapon. Guns are a right here in the US, but if one does not accept their power responsibily then that person is a fool (case in point). This person let ego destroy all his past work and future dreams. Far worse, he destroyed all of Kaylin’s hopes and dreams, with those of all who know and love her. In an act of sheer stupidity, he pulled that trigger and in a few hundredths of a second wasted 70 years of her life. By all means own a gun if you like, it’s your right, but RESPECT it and LEARN to be a RESPONSIBLE gun owner!
Sounds like a democrat. Talking about how they were once a brave gun owner then somehow they turned into some monster until they sold it all and voted for Biden.
So true. Your words also apply to people having children, drinking alcohol...and any number of decisions we make in our lives. If you want the joy they can bring....you must learn how to handle them correctly and learn the pitfalls of how things can go wrong to prevent them.
I was once helping teach my brother in law to drive, and the county road turned into private road. We were trapped until we got to a house. A grumpy old man approached us and complained about a sign, but there was no sign. Besides, the road just turned into a private road. I'm glad we didn't end up in this situation.
There are a lot of people like this out there. One example is the "loud music trial" in Florida. Another recent one is Hannah in Georgia, who pursued and stopped someone, and then murdered him over a traffic infraction. It's really frightening.
Don't forget about Ralph Yarl (the kid that was shot by Andrew Lester). That trial hasn't happened yet. Old racist man (Andrew Lester) shot him through the door.
I do giggle work on the side. Every night I’m walking up to houses, up driveways, pulling down side and private roads… and quite often I need to check a few residences before I find the right one. I live and mostly work in the city, and if there’s anyone I’m worried about in the city at night, it’s people like that guy.
I quit doing Amazon flex because of cases like this. When you have to use your personal vehicle, people don’t believe you’re bringing them their packages. I had too many scary encounters and felt like it was only a matter of time before someone _really_ overreacted
Same, drove for Amazon and we had to use the small Uhaul box trucks for about 6 months before we got the amazon vans. Had several scary instances myself including one where I pulled out of this guys driveway as he was about to pull in and he chased me in his truck until he got ahead of me then did a deadstop and got out acting like he was about to attack. Seen my amazon clothes and ended up apologizing, but said if he had his piece on him it might've turned ugly because apparently he had just been robbed a few days prior.
I don't blame you. I get that those unhinged people are out there but it's perplexing. I had a flex delivery person last week and he was at the wrong house. I was expecting something so I went out to meet him and when he said the house number we figured out together which side of the street and which direction. (I always have to really think about it because I don't know all my neighbors.) It was a really nice interaction. I got to help someone and it's always nice to meet a new person, I think. I hope he is the one to make my next delivery. He was so sweet. I don't know how someone's immediate reaction is fear/hate. We leave out baskets of chips and drinks in summertime. We don't hate people. I just...why are these people like this?

I appreciate this Judge’s words. This America has turned upside down and so tense since 2016. People need to take a breath, stand back and reevaluate the situation. This killer is evil. Thank god this jury and judge saw exactly what he is…a killer.
A lot of people talking about how this man must be afraid of his own shadow... I disagree. This man doesn't have the emotional capacity to feel fear. I've known people like this. He's lived his whole life wishing he could have the experience of killing someone, but knowing he'd never get away with it. He thought he saw his chance to have that experience and get away with it, so he took it. Simple as that. He wasn't acting out of fear for his life, he was acting out of premeditated malice presented with an unexpected opportunity to express itself.
I at least get up and look out the window to make sure they aren't stealing or smoking drugs because my house/equipment yard is in a really bad part of town but ya, his actions were insane and egregious.

I 100% concur with the judge that Monahan"s overall demeanor and lack of remorse pose a future risk that he could easily repeat this again without a second thought.
He seems like the type that was just waiting for someone to drive up that road so he could use his gun. For the cost of a good gun you could literally put up a simple gate or fence and a big sign. There could be 101 reasons why anyone would drive up that road…including delivery services, utility workers, insurance adjusters, law enforcement and lost drivers. The media portrayed that story as if the White guys simply found a Black guy, chased after him and shot him in the back. I was shocked until I saw a podcast that actually showed the video. The so called victim was leaving a house that was still being constructed and had been burglarized before. After they saw the man leave the house they followed him and demanded, at gun point, he wait for the police. Although, this is not something I would have done, I was surprised to see what had unfolded. As the White guys were trying to get him to wait for the police, the Black guy walks towards the man with the rifle and begins to punch him in the face while trying to take his gun. It was only then that he was shot. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t have been punished but I certainly would not have found them guilty of murder if I were on the jury.
I'm schizophrenic, if I hurt someone while suffering a psychosis, even an animal, I would just call it a night out of shame. The last thing I'd ever want is to let my illness do harm to others than me, and I take every precaution to avoid it. And then people like this exist, fully healthy (except maybe a huge ego), and just want to end people for fun. It's revolting.
Heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking. Stole that girl's life. Just threw lead at a car driving away. It's like, how do you protect your kids?! They were just driving to a party. I don't know how many times in my life I've been with people who make a u-turn in a drive way because you realize you're off course. Yes, Google Maps is sometimes really wrong in rural areas and you have to stop and figure out where you went wrong. Imagine if every time you did that all of a sudden someone is running at you WITH A GUN OUT??!! The kids didn't approach the house. I feel so bad for the parents. There isn't even a word in the dictionary for when your child dies.
It's very simple how someone can act like that. I'm not stating anything about this case but just an example. Say you have someone who has been overseas, fighting for our country. The guy has multiple deployments under his belt and recieved a debriefing about how the enemy put a bounty on his head. Then look at our open borders and all the cyber attacks to get personal information. The paranoia that guy must face must be great. Hopefully the guy remembers to get positive identification before administering lethal force. The guy in this case shot at a vehicle leaving his property and has been convicted accordingly. But I'll ask this question. If the guy had a sign that said no trespassing and violators will be shot. Would he have been justified?
