I am a massive Mondeo MKIII fan, and detest Vauxhalls but respect to the Vectra - everyone I know who has had one says its bombproof.

Even the Mazda still looks half decent today

I drive a Mondeo Diesel and I love it. We'll be getting a second car in the new year and that will be an ST220. I've driven the Vectra, and sure it's quick but it's not as pleasurable a drive.

I live in Canada and have a Ford Fusion it's based on the same platform as the Mondeo and I have to agree it's a fantastic drivers car. Too bad about the roads here as I never really get to "drive".

Thing is, having a nice driving or fun car is not about outright speed, its having a car where the chassis can handle its power instead of trying to keep a car in a straight line/fighting with the steering wheel etc cos it has too much power. The mondeo has less power than the vectra but the chassis can handle it and it will be the more fun/better driving car.

the first mondeo st220 the 5 speed manuals do a 153mph top speed and get there quicky 6 speed 04 upwards does 156mph its same engine g/box susoension running gear as a jaguar x type really great 3.0v6petrol cars and fast unless its a diesel st you own that's diff car altogether look same diff underneath and nowhere near as quick as v6 im a shocked owner as its a 2nd car as my esc cos is in garage getting overhaul bushes and cleaning etc as mint but never knew how good a car they are and all the equipment omg leather a/c cruise control I was going to use during autumn winter sell start summer ive now decided keeping it like escort and sell focus runaround I have old st170 if any you offered cheap mondeo st220 as go from 500 to 5000 get it unless engines makin funny clicks r clunks don't buy walk if rough n engine ok 500 bargain goin up in price becoming collectors classic as fastest mondeo made so far 220bhp standard cosworth was 200bhp standard lol

Nope Nope It's a Ford Mondeo :D I've seen cars with much more power and FWD who understeered much less. The Ford is probably a bit too heavy in the front.

I got a poverty spec MK3 for my first car. Not fast, or the most interesting car on the road, but I love her. Makes the temptation of an ST220 or Mazda 6 MPS as my next car really tough to decide on.

Hamish Beasley exactly.. And fyi mister police officer, ooh yes they were. In a straight line they were indeed pretty quick (especially for the money) but when it comes to the handling bit, it’s really that bad. It’s also ridiculously heavy!

Kevin's ST220 started to have a few faults once it got to about 70,000 miles and he sold it. But I've still got mine. It's got about 81,000 miles on it now and is still really fun to drive. We used to live close to each other and we met because we both drove the same type of car. Mine does have an occasional problem but nothing serious or expensive. Regards, David E.

My Mondeo is knocking on the door of 300k miles. And its never had a problem. Just good oil. I have 1.8 estate and even that is one of the most charming cars I've ever been in

trouble is if you want one, they're still 3+ grand, whereas you can have an ST220 which is still a great car, especially in that metallic blue for just over one thousand

ive actually bought a mint con saloon 4dr st220 low ileage etc done 34.000mls from new serviced by same dealership from new (im in 2 minds to travel the distance next service just mileage puts me off too keep same dealership during my ownership as its really great car it shocked me mines is an 02 plate last of 5speedmtx g/box changed too six 03 / 04 previous owner had later xenon headlamps fitted and newer style rear lights inside its last of rare black dash models black recaro leather seats its got all the bells n whistles u name it cruise control everything apart from sink I paid 3k as car still had the plastic 5 books history old mot,s every nut bolt ever bought folders stuff since new so im up grand already and 4drs are mega rare mainly 5dr hatch n estates sold great cars wonder what other go for now considering as ive seen st220s as low as 500 as high as 5k bet other cars are not much more than scrap lol ill need to check now if u get one cheap and drives good no noises nab it its same engine and g/box and suspension as jaguar xtype v6 duratec good on fuel itll run forver if u look after it and parts are cheap

+Paul Thompson I can't argue with the performance and value for money you get with the Mazda 6/Atenza, but I'd still have my Mondeo over the Mazda. I think a part of that is exclusivity, I've seen more MPS Mazdas in one place than I have of ST220s in my life. There's just so few of them in New Zealand

MPS looks nice and sleek. The Vectra looks bullish and aggressive. The ST220 looks perfectly proportioned and sweet, that’s why I bought one.

Not a good buy once they get to 7-8 years old due to catastrophic corrosion issues, just like all Mazda 3s and 6s of the era.
