This is legitimately one of the greatest songs ever written. The lyrics invoke youth and the lusty loss of innocence. Eric's guitar tone and solo's are absolute perfection and Ross crafted this entire song brilliantly. His vocals perfectly fit the lusty, youthful excitement the song's lyrics and overall feel portray. The fact it was filmed at Maroubra Beach, a beach I am familiar with, makes it even cooler. I listen to this song on repeat for hours sometimes. It's a classic among classics. Like I said, one of the greatest songs ever written - certainly one of the best Aussie songs.
I was a 21 year old Canadian living in the " Great Southern Land " back in the mid 80's. I would give the next 10 years of my life for 5 previous years of my Aussie past. I loved the country and the people. 😊❤
Thanks mate. Its still a great place. I ended up losing a few good mates who went to Canada and never came back so I guess Canada has something going for it as well. 👍
Simple fact is that this is one of the top 3 Aussie songs ever! It is as applicable today as it was 40 years ago. Every guys dream then as it is today. One big factor is that Australia is not the same today. Being a teenager in Frankston in the early 1960s was really different, as the town changed, people grew up and moved elsewhere within the Bayside area, Interstate and even over seas. Rolling into the 1970s through to the early 1980s as an adult was a whole different experience. Music like this allows everyone from that Timezone to drift back and reminisce about the old days good and yes no so good, which is life. just dwell on the good things as life is far too short and enjoy. Should be in your early 20s and reading this, it’s a guarantee you shall look back in time, just like us older guys and gals and say, if only and it’s ok if you don’t believe it right now. Just enjoy it while you can. The only advise I shall give you is always love your Mum and respect your Dad, and look after your own family as best you can.
@@demun6065 Oh yes it sure is. The lead singer is Ross Wilson. He fronted Mondo Rock & before that, Daddy Cool. Quite a catalogue of great songs they created.
I was in Sydney in the mid to late 80s when I first heard this song on the radio. Still brings back strong memories. Love this song and State of the Heart. Such unique, relaxing songs. Love Mondo Rock. 🧡🙂
Timeless track. 1985 I had my 1st girlfriend, went to my 1st beach parties, hanging at the surf club & was even getting down on the sand. A very good summer !
I must have been aware as it went straight into the 'don't play in front of Mum' category. It subsequently went into the 'don't play in front of the kids', but they found it anyway.
Loved this song for the way it accentuates the melodic minor phrasing. Also brings back fond memories of when I would catch the 396 to Maroubra beach back in the 80s, and old Holden Sandmans would bellow out this track. The soundtrack to our lives. Our Wonder Years!
I know it's Maroubra beach but every time I see the building behind it, (where the car is) it reminds of Port Kembla beach. South of Wollongong. The building with the yellow wall there is the kiosk. One side faces the beach, the other side faces Port Kembla pool.
Still reckon Ross' work in Mondo was more iconic Aussie than Eagle Rock could ever be. Maybe its my age. I was born in 74. But this. Cool World. State of the Heart... they touched on my teenage desires and life much greater than the others even though dropping your strides on the dancing floor to Eagle Rock was still a thing!
I was only 16, and she was 17. She asked the dumbest bloke in the classroom for "help" with her homework after school. Not being the sharpest tool in the shed, I was pondering all day why she wanted me to help her with her homework. Needless to say, I ended up helping her as regularly as I could once I discovered what was involved. I was a good student :D
I remember how risqué this song was the first time I heard it and I still love it. You guys were brilliant and I miss songs like you made. Thank you all so very much for being a part of my youth and take care please, Mate
I think this is the best song Australia has produced. Perfect in every way. You can walk around the film site at Maroubra and feel the song off in the distance, lingering in our memories
I was 23 when this came out and madly in love for the first time in my life. This song brings back so many memories of him, and of 9 months of happiness. He broke my heart and it took a while to get over. Still reminds me of you always Peter.
Every time I see that car drive away it takes the 1980's with it. And with it a memory of a girl with a beautiful smile on a playground swing in a drive in as the sun set. Funny what stays with us as time passes
Actually I'm severely deaf, and I like it! If you've got good hearing aids or headphones it's great! So those 98 people that disliked it (now 174) are just idiots!
I had the chance to Email Ross a few years back - helped me get a copy of one of their CD's that was stolen from me back in the 90's. This song is a pure classic, probably one of the best Aussie rock songs of all time. I guess he's retired now but I would love to shake his hand. Thanks man!
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BANDS FROM THE 80s AND THR CURRENT STUFF IS VERY SIMPLE THE 80s BANDS MUSIC LIVES ON EVEN AFTER 30 YEARS ITS TIMELESS JUST LIKE THIS SONG .THE CURRENT STUFF HAS NO FEEL OR SOUL AND THEY CANT PLAY INSTRUMENTS .
So true my friend. The bands and songs from this era are simply immortal. The 90s also produced some great stuff, but I simply cannot go past the 80s for my pure pleasure. Had the greatest experience in seeing Icehouse life a couple of years back. The crowd was very mixed, but nonetheless, they rocked the house down
It’s still not quite as crowded as the other beaches of the eastern suburbs. The Parking’s still free. Those concrete steps in clip are still there, as is the green headland to the south, thankfully. The lifesaving club’s been developed but Seals club has really only had a coat of paint ( and done up a little inside) but lots of bits of the seventies and eighties still there. Now my son has met with his friends down on that sand, on party nights at the end of school….
I've been down Maroubra beach these past few months - it's still an open, exposed sandy beach with some fair to decent waves. The steps and concrete promenade are still there, as is the surf life saver buildings. And a nice Cafe on the beachfront too.
@@racerxfile you f*&^ing what? a coupe of days ago? (minus three years) Listen to the album. Summer of 81, Tied up in knots, Chemistry..... Jesus Man, where you been?
This is one of those songs that capture a feeling.. I was born in '85 ...I'm 34 now... and plan to be listening to this until after I'm 85.. Mondo Fkn Rock !🤘
last few times i seen him was when he showed up pissed at some ross hannaford (daddy kool) dianas kiss shows and done a few un announced vocals lol, that was back in the 90s though, im pretty sure ross hannaford has passed since then
It's amazing how some songs just stick in your Mind!!! Haven't heard this song in decades yet I still sing the chorus to this day lmfao it just pops in my head sometimes lmfao true story🤪😋
Just saw this on ABC TV. I reckon I haven't even heard the track since the late 80s! I was 17 when it came out - 53 now - but it immediately brought memories flooding back of those great times when we wrongly thought we had the weight of the world on our shoulders. Oh, how I wish for those days again!
Memories of me, 14! my older sister 16 chasing boys and drinking at Bribie Island Queensland. Summers…. I miss you sis RIP Phillipa. Thank you for such fun memories. X
Just thinking. An Australian Beach, people here for maybe 60,000 years. This song has been played a million times. It’s unique and original every time. Humanity is great. Let’s respect that.
Takes me back to 84 kiwi boy turning up to the fantastic sights of Sydney for the first time to have my 21st birthday,,,,, geez that went quick they said it would
I was 30 ... playing 5 nights a week in a covers band at the time in many of the same pubs Ross was working!!! What a frikking magnificent scene ... before pokies just blew the bottom out of live rock!! Literally every corner pub had bands 4-7 nights a week ... no "nightclubs" no "pokies" ...just live music!! The only DJ's that "played" were the ones that put the music on between sets or bands!!!
I saw mondo rock play live in Southport Qld in 1982. It’s a long time ago but I can still remember how tight and fresh their sound was- they nailed it.
I remember when this came out I was on holidays at Jurien Bay beach huts & Ross's voice along with the sexy lyrics had me dreamin & drawing 💜 in the sand. Lol 😆🖒
This is just what we need Alison. Timeless tunes engraved our history and input like yours just paints another imaginable picture. Wish I was older when this hit the world, "I was just 11teen".
an amazing song. such a cool sound and feel, so awesome. im grateful to my mum forever for introducing me to old music. ever since i was a kid ive been listening to some of the best music to ever grace this earth. another thought i had, why are they both on the beach during the day lol. the song is about these almost adults going down the beach and doing "what they wanna do" but they're there while theres people around lmao.
Great song an absolute Aussie classic, capturing the mood of the time... Surely influenced by Bobby Goldsboro's "Summer, the First Time", they both end as started, repeating the intro, same vibe... Truly, a great track...
