In this one I’m literally putting my money where my mouth is and buying not one, but two #Mirka sanders to use as a long-term test. I purchased these with my own money - got to spend those RU-vid millions somehow - but I did receive a discount from MirkaUK; after the test conclusion in 6-12 months, the #MirkaDeros and #MirkaDeos will be given away to 10MinuteWorkshop Plus members. Enjoy!

All nice tools, my basement is also full of them. But looking at the material prices, my hobby is more likely to be „watching woodworking videos on RU-vid“ rather than woodworking. Even plain 19mm MDF costs 25€/m2 at the moment in Germany, it’s just crazy.

Enjoyed the video as ever.. Just made the same jump as you from Festool to the Mirka.. Really like the compact nature of the Does. Been using the older Deros for a while now and that has been great, used it on everything from sanding walls to work tops and its pretty dust free.. Look forward to seeing how you find them both..

I have had a Deros for about the past 8 years and I agree with Kieran, its a dream to use. I purchased one of the original models and had a couple of issues after about 18 months but Mirka sent one of the updated models, with no quibbles, and its has been brilliant. It gets used most days and the results are always excellent. The dust management is absolutely first rate. Expensive yes, effective yes, would I change it for another make NO!

Thank you for a quality review! Someday I will definitely get myself a deos 385. This is amazing equipment. The lightest grinder in its class. This allows even people with weak hands to grind better and with more pleasure from work. Maintaining the health of the arms, hands and joints is very important. An investment in a tool is the most important investment for a craftsman!

@Peter Millard: Great video, as usual. About the speed control on the flappy pedal - you can look at it as a soft start kind of deal. When you started sanding with the rectangular festool, as soon as you made contact with the board it wanted to slip out of your hands because it was already at full speed. That's where I see the benefit of a slower start.

This is good. I took your Deros concerns on board, and did a ton of reading, and found it was only woodworkers in a certain time period that had switch issues. I've had mine two years now and can be on it for 6-8 hrs some days. The only issue I've had is the mains leads packing up, but Mirka now do rewirable leads, and with them it's so far, so good (my original lead and my intergrated hose lead both died). The replacement leads are quite affordable, so bought two so I always have a backup, and have hacked my hose lead to be a female socket for any tool to attach to. Anyway, it's good that you're going to do a thorough test. Just noting the difference in the sanding patterns is a big thing. I remember your side by side test a while back and also in terms of dust extraction the Deros with Abranet was hard to beat.

Couldn’t agree more with the section about getting the sander in your hand if possible when spending this kind of cash. I guess you were told at Mirka: When it comes to vibration, the counterweight at least at the Deros is set for Mirka Mesh sanding disks. If you use heavier paperback disks on a regular base, you should adjust the weight with the small Allen head screws that you can find in the systainer.

PS: as mirkas origins are in the automotive sector, the floppy pedal comes in handy when you sand on round shapes, so you can dail the speed down for less abrasion on a small spot. Or as leazy woodworker - use it for quick n' dirty rounded corners...

I’m into property maintenance coving most aspects of renovation. Had plenty of cheap sanders and extractors that never truly gave me what I wanted until I found the mirka sanders at d&m tool show. I bought the two you have. Took me an age to get to grips with the paddle and also had a few cock ups picking them up when I thought they was turned off. But time went by and they was great. The deros went bang first just after the warranty expired so I replaced it then both went wrong in the same week. The parts prices makes the a throw away tool. I truly look after my tools and know how to use them so felt very let down by the mirka and now don’t recommend them. I do also know 3 other people that’s had the same problem. Festool sanders for me now and do own a rts400 the same vintage as the one you have and it’s used most days and at times most of the day and it still runs sweet. Hopefully you still have something to give away Peter🤣

I just got the 3M sander. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I did turn it on just to see. And the comfort compared to my dewalt random orbital sander was pretty obvious. But clearly, there's a large following for Mirka. But as an Xtract 3M sand paper fan, I'm grateful that Mirka's patent on mesh sandpaper expired - giving us Xtract from 3M. Funny how we all get so attached to our tools :)

I bought the 3M too. I have the Mirka Deros, but its been repaired 3 times (the control board). Repairs have been under warranty and out of warranty. Parts are very expensive. This is why I have the 3M Xtract Electric Random Orbital Sander. Time will tell on reliability, but the sander is impressive in use. I also have the RO 150 FEQ-Plus, a very different machine for different tasks. As you can see I am not a brand fan, I appreciate quality tools that do the job they are designed for. I want to make investments that last and give great service. This is where the Mirka Deros has been disappointing for me, I'm hoping 3M proves to be a great buy.

I'll echo my comments from your ig post: I'm looking forward to you impressions over time. Mirka's price in the US and reliability concerns kept me from them when I sold all my cheap sanders and invested in the festool ETS EC150/5 and RTS 400. The Deros (6" with 5mm stroke) is $140 more than the ETS EC 150/5 in the US, and the Deos is $220 more than the RTS 400. That's almost a second RTS 400 lol I'm sure they're great sanders if they last, but woof! those prices... Odd to hear it, but festool is the better value in this instance.

Great vid Peter, I’ve had mine for 6 years or so now. I’m a dad first and foremost that does as much for 3 homes as I can (2 sons and my own)I came into the Mirka range out of needing a good industrial sander for my first fit out of my sons salon. Now on my second and yes retirement is only a word! I bought the corresponding Mirka dust extraction vac at the same time at a very affordable price for the two. It’s been an absolute workhorse including 600 square feet of oak floor. Dust extraction on the horizontal is first class. Paddle switch is a bit marmite - sometimes I love. Initially went out deliberately to purchase Festool based on this channel but common sense and my wallet made the final decision. i used an orbital sander for a while then went back to manual sanding with the paper and cork block, I find it easier and you are in control more, perhaps the only issue is dust but saying that since its manual it does not blow all over the place like a machine one and you can at times slant your work piece and the dust drops to the top/floor. Maybe one of those fancy yellow sanders ( Mirca I think its called) might be my next move , but they are not cheap. Also manual on the edge is better I think, you just adjust the sandpaper harshness if need to be (say 80 to 150 grit for example)

Back in the 90s, I had a summer job at a boat builders, sanding yacht hulls. We used air tools exclusively; battery tech wasn't there yet and air was better than mains electricity. I'd completely forgotten about that until now. It seems an air sander plus compressor would be cheaper than the Mirka sanders, especially if you're buying two, and extra especially if you've already got the compressor for your nail gun.

For something like a nailer, a small compressor is fine, but for anything like a sander then you need a huge compressor to keep up with the demands, so not really an option. 👍

Yes indeed these Mirkas are damn pricey. There is an alternative with the 3M sander but in all honesty it is almost as expensive. I used a round version of the Mirka earlier this year and agree that the toggle flap is very cumbersome to try to vary the speed. It is not easy to vary since the range is so tiny. A simple adjustable knob would be better. Perhaps this flap works better for car refinishing? Aside from the price I found the Mirka round sander to be pretty similar to others I have used. I cannot say it out performed by any stretch. I honestly have yet to meet someone who loves them. But hopefully we will see as Peter uses the sander over the next few months.

I am not sure if someone has already commented on this but another significant difference in between your Festool sanders and the Mirka ones is the fact that your new Mirka kit is brushless: the noise and vibration must be much quieter / smooth even if did not make mention of that. Everything that I have read about it points out the new 3M sander as the machine to beat when all is taking into account inc price - shame its power cord is not detachable. I’ll keep making do with my old Bosch stuff until they break down. I would love watching someone taking all these sanders apart and do a review on its internals assembly and engineering for the sake of longevity!

@@10MinuteWorkshop That depends on how much, and how you use them - if you're using them for a few hours every day and perhaps bearing down on them a little, then those little hooks are going to wear down fairly quickly. I've never done a controlled test, but when I first started using Abranet (a few years back now and without a pad saver), I remember being decidedly irked when the hook and loop grip started to fail way to early for my liking, and I had to buy a new backing pad. A pad saver costs around £4/4.50, a 150mm backing pad (for the Deros) around £35/40 - for me the pad savers are a no brainer. The marginal extra softness the pad saver gives, doesn't create a problem for me. A possible solution for you, would be to switch to 3M 775L cubitron ii discs - you may lose a little where dust extraction is concerned - but no need for a pad saver, and I suspect you'll get significantly more sanding done with a single cubitron ii disc than an Abranet one. Out of interest, did you give the Festool ETS EC 150 a try, before buying into Mirka? And a top tip with the Deros, is don't drive it too hard - it rewards a lighter touch. I made the mistake of lending my first one to a client - even after detailed instructions and a demonstration, they managed to burn it out (the speed controller is the first thing that fails) by running it at top speed and bearing down on it too heavily. My view is that even though the Deros wins on ergonomics - the Festool wins on solid engineering, being able to run it all day and that pad break clinches the deal. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into these videos, you deserve the many subscribers you have. 🙂

After a lot of internal back and forth on the Deros due to reliability concerns, I bought one at the beginning of the year. It is my favorite sander I have, but the ets ec is no slouch either, I just think the Deros is a comfortable sander to run. After purchasing the Deros I was trying to find a way to justify the Deos. I also replaced a 10yr old RTS last December with a new RTS. Yet I did still consider the Deos because the height of the sander versus the RTS is appealing. plus I'd get a spare plug assuming that they are interchangeable like Festool lol. In the end the Mirka pricing structure on the Deos for the USA seems whack and is the deterrent. Mirka is usually the more expensive option in the States compared to Festool, except for drywall Sanders. But the Deos is listed at $507 without a systainer versus the $289 RTS with systainer. It just doesn't make sense for me atm out of principle that you can almost buy two RTS's for one Deos lol. Anyway I'll be interested in your opinion on the Deos after you've logged some hours.

Finally, someone getting the Deos! Hey Peter :) Didn't you find the Deos very hard to control, mostly with the dust collection on? I got one 3 years ago and ended up hating it. Mirka never solved my issue. I just can't control it because it runs crazy everywhere over the surface. It's even worse when set to the lowest speeds. I found it unusable and for a high price there's no excuse for this to happen. Curious to see your thoughts when you use it more. The design is great, though, but one cannot sand with the looks of a machine!

I'm sure this will be an interesting long term test, and may possibly go some way to reassure people about the reliability issues with the mirka brand. Personally I still wouldn't swap my Festool Sanders for Mirka, because almost everything else I use at my mft benches or outdoors has a Festool plug-it cable, and my extractor hoses either have the integrated cable or one securely attached with Velcro straps. I'm too old, impatient and lazy to keep swapping cables all day! The other thing that bothers me as well as outright reliability, is the anecdotal evidence about the lack of customer service, if there is a problem. No doubt Mirka have their fingers crossed that your two machines will last the course without incident, and I don't doubt that if there is a problem you will get first class service. But I KNOW from experience that Festool UK service is excellent, regardless of whether you are a RU-vidr doing a review or just a regular Joe on a building site!

An electric 77mm orbital, delta and a square sheet sander all in the same shape would be killer. I’ve been using a Makita random orbital and a Bosch square orbital and they are both “fine” however I have been looking to upgrade for a while now, the little dust port on my Bosch has been broken for a long time and my Makita is still going strong but after trying out a friends Festool equivalent (can’t remember the model name) I was actually really shocked by how much better it was. Sanding results were the same (to my eye anyway) but the sanding itself felt so much easier, I felt like I could use it for hours on end and not suffer from the vibrations or have to exert barely any pressure at all compared to my Makita. I’ve been tempted to pull the trigger on buying the Festool equivalent to my sanders but I’m also toying with the idea of Mirka, however I don’t have any friends or work colleagues who use Mirka so it’s difficult to actually try them hands on. In your opinion if you had to recommend one or the other which do you think would be the best investment for someone in my situation? For a bit of background I’m an English finish carpenter based in Southern California in the states, I do all things finish carpentry and mainly work on remodeling existing homes. Materials wise a bit of everything but a lot of pine, oak, and then ipe when doing outside decks and fences, a lot of cedar when outside as well but I’m rarely sanding cedar. Any advice from anyone is appreciated!

Wow, tough call! The Festool ETS EC is closest to the Mirka, and I honestly think you'd be fine with either one. You have the choice of two pads with the Mirka, which is a winner, but I know a lot of folks who've had a deros die on them way sooner than they expected, for the usage they had - check out my Deros video, link in the description, for links to those guys.

I am gravitating towards the Festool as I’ve tried it and everyone I know who has one loves it, but just wanted to be sure committing hundreds of dollars! I have heard bad things about the durability of the Mirka like you say, however as long as there’s a decent warranty and good reputation for customer service I’m not too much of a stickler for durability as I really look after all my tools and in general. My Fein multi-tool was a big upgrade for me from a makita one and it died too soon, but it was within warranty and true to their word they sent me a brand new one with at least 15 different new blades and sanding pads!
