I can see two winners: two men who are lucky enough to get the chance to play the best equipment there is, knowing how privileged they are. And we are all privileged to be able to be part of all this. It is great to see how happy you are doing what you do. Happy new year!
In deed ! Dan's style is usually closer to my wheel-house ..but that Strat & Mick.. Damn . Bloody hell..the tone.. This video, gents..is my absolute favourite guitar tones..ever.. Both clean and crunch & higher gain. Specially the clean on both . PS: the Vox (with the Celestion Green series speakers) and Dan's red Tele..is also on that very Top. This was Glooorious....... Thank you so much. Kudos from Portugal . PPS : sorry if u have, and I missed it.., but have you ever tried a Stereo, or a Wet/dry/Wet setup with a Twin Reverb & a Vox AC30 ?
Same, its 2:53 where I am right now and I want to cranck my amp up and wake everyone up, I'll wait a few hours though. I don't have work tomorrow... oh I mean today haha
Mick has me using my volume knobs a lot more than i use to. I played last weekend an used a les paul with humbuckers first set. Then played a Esquire the rest of the night and was completely happy. Volume knob help you find a lot more tones.
This series is super entertaining. Maybe on suggestion: A rig in between dirt cheap and overly expensive, for the working man musician. A rig that is versatile for gigging, rehearsing and practise. I'd love your educational take on this. If you were a guitarist in a band that plays mostly small clubs, and you were to start over, which essential gear would you choose?
Yeah that would be great. One guitar? I wonder whether they'd recommend something traditional like a Blues Jr and a Tele or think digital and versatile like an HSS strat with a THR100 or something like a Blackstar Silverline...would be a good episode.
For a standard, Fender inspired blues/rock/flexible rig, I think a Fender American Performer of your choice and a Bassbreaker 30R would be a great start, plus a selection of pedals to your tastes, probably a versatile OD/Distortion (1981 DRV?), mod of some sort, and a delay (maybe?)
Den I//Noble Russkie I’d have the American Performer Tele with the split coil humbucker in the neck, the THR100 and drive, reverb, delay, distortion and tuner pedal. Fully reliable, giggable and insanely flexible rig for $3k US or so.
@@jimmythefish Those THRs are amazing amps, can't fault you there!! For a long time I was considering using one for my stereo rig before I decided on a JC40. I did keep my pedal selection to 3 pedals, as per the brief though ;)
I agree! Something like a Squier guitar, with a blues junior, with a mix of like MXR and boss or tone city pedals. That makes a nice in between and will give great sounds. I would love to see Dan and Mick play that setup though.
And the winner is… US, you’re ever so loyal viewing and listening audience. Absolutely spectacular, gentlemen! Thank you so much - it gets me even more excited for what is in store from you in 2020! 🎸
Gents... that was mental! The matchless is by far one of my favorite amps, but my LORD was Mick’s rig the best sound I have heard in a long time. Top notch boys!
I cannot begin to articulate how great that preamp pedal and flanger sound with the Tele. It is something magical sparkling through the Matchless, just so amazing! A treat for the ears.
I was floored they didn't run stereo. Just put an AB box between these two rigs. Then you would have the ultimate ridiculous rig, while immediately doubling the cost. Absolute reference material for tones.
@@frankieconcepcion7860 i started with digital and ss amps. Ill stick to my bassman. While i dont get to crank it up, i do play and fairly loud volumes by todays standards. The feel is completely different. You just cant get it from kemper or other digital. I have used a kemper in a recording environment, for that it is great. It keeps everything consistent.
Just bought used Thorpy Camo Ser # 070. Very excited and got to let you guys know that since I found you guys a few years back my playing has changed and grown to amazing heights as well as my wallet shrinking...lol. I have spent crazy on pedals but have had a blast. The carpe diem into HW deep blue delay..into blues jr / marshall class 5 through a/b tone bone is my go to setup but my master pedal board I spent last winter building is housing 23 pedals controlled by the Gig Rig 2. I grew up a blue grass picker and didnt touch an electric until I was 35yrs old. I have even bought numerous amps that you guys play through. Thank you so much for the inspiration and joy you gents have brought with THAT PEDAL SHOW.
Avid watcher of the show for ages. The mutual respect and genuine friendship Mick and Dan have between each other are just magically. To see two people that love what they are doing and emotionally moved by each others playing is everything that music should be and should bring to the world. Thank you so much for this raw energy and passion on display with your dream rigs. It's also a reminder of how much there is to discover and learn to put into my own playing.
Love coming back to older TPS videos like this, when mick did the divebomb thing and looked at dan, just the unashamed fun in that moment is why I love this video!
Loved this episode! The biggest difference I'm hearing between the vintage guitars and your old faithfuls is clarity. The vintage guitars just have great clarity and note separation across the entire range. Both red and blue get a little muddy, blue falters a bit more. This is especially true when gain comes in. The vintage guitars still sound crisp to where all the sounds are still there. Who knows why that is the case, but that's what I'm hearing.
Dan's impression when Mick plays = priceless. You probably can't be any more emotional, without shedding a tear. It's heart warming to witness such a genuine liking to... Well, anything. Keep up the awesome work guys, and have a great new year!
If you’ve got the cash splash it, and you should not be embarrassed. Fender all the way, the Strat & the Two Rock or the Tele & the Two Rock I’d be very happy with either. Brilliant video Dan & Mick. 👍🏻😎👊🏻
Absolutely the best episode, bar non. Great tone and great playing! My favorite part was watching each reaction, comparing their main axes to each vintage guitar. We could clearly hear what you were reacting to as well. With that said, a 100 watt amp humming (does not need to be anywhere near 10), will always put to shame a low wattage stage compatible amp of today. Great job guys, you are the best.
I loved that, fascinating stuff. It's always great to see you both getting off on tone, sounds, the feel of guitars. Such a really good, solid channel and the chemistry in the team is great. Thanks!
Fun episode! One for Viewers’ questions? Have you any advice about wireless guitar systems? I’m building a board and am tempted to go wireless between the guitar and the pedal board. Do the wireless units affect tone? Any issues to be aware of (like picking up taxi radio?).
Malcolm Brown I’m not sure I would go that far. For example for a long time Fender didn’t make left handed Precision basses. That may even still be the case, I haven’t checked but this is also my point. I have to get to know the bass I have. I did manage to find an older one. I’m not looking for a “better” one. I think it forces you to look at other manufacturers because with for example Fender and Gibson you can’t check out dozens to find a good one. Better to buy from a company with better quality consistency then your left handed is likely to be better. I have a Les Paul and I don’t like it but I can’t try out lots to find a good one so I bought a Heritage. When it comes to vintage you can get into serious GAS which to be honest I think Dan is suffering from. That Tele he has is good. The Strat Mick played is obviously very nice though.
There is another advantage to being left handed. Nobody I know can play my guitars. Another factor is that I think right handers find it harder to work out what you are playing but if you are left handed you are used to watching right handers. This would be a kind of mean advantage though.
Watching some old videos a year later, I miss watching you guys just hang out and make a bunch of noise in the room. Hoping you’re able to get back in together soon!
These guys can make muddy water sound awesome. Sweet video. My dream rig is at 1000us dollars burgera v22 retubed, couple good pedals and beat up strat all second hand but just magic. I always have to go play after watching their videos thanks guys
Really enjoy your videos; they’re very informative and entertaining at the same time!! I love chorus sounds, a very close second to a good overdrive. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Even though these setups are completely unattainable to most everyone, I found this your most inspiring episode yet! I LOVE hearing and seeing your reactions, getting so fired up by your own sounds. Thank you for this one!
Do you know what I love about this show - you both play in such different styles, Mick so silky and bluesy - and Dan, I have to say, is one of the most underrated players on RU-vid in my opinion - so expressive. Merry Xmas guys.
Incredible! The problem with this video is that the tones were so inspiring it took me about 3 hours to watch it in full as I had to keep pausing it to play. I'd love to see an A/B between this and the cheap (Mick?) rigs! Keep up the good work.
I remember Mick saying how he struggled sometimes with various aspects of guitar, looking depressed as he discussed it. Now that look on his face, the one that says 'I found a little piece of guitar tone nirvana.' Best I've heard you sound Mick! As an aside, considered getting the custom shop to take a look at that Strat? Could be worth it, especially given how happy you looked playing it.
Mick, I'm really smitten with the finish on the '61 Strat and decided to do a bit of digging and found that the defined stages of sunburst wasn't uncommon during the 60's. Indeed there is a '64 Strat in the Guitar mag "Stratocaster Bible" that clearly shows the three black/red/amber colours (although really worn) almost identical to yours. Whoever did the refinish on the '61 did a really good job. I think it's gorgeous and sounds celestial.
Fun outing, as always. Agree with the observations on relative differences between Red and the '64 Tele and Blue and the '61 Strat. The analogy that comes to mind is a woodcarving of a scene: same scene, "identical" image, but one piece is more deeply carved or incised.
Mick wins "unfeasibly loud" hands down. I only saw Dan hit 102 a couple of times, maybe a 103, Mick hit 106 ticking over and at least once was up at 110
I don't know why it took me so long to find your channel - probably because I'm very new to the electric scene (long time acoustic player) - but I LOVE your content!!!! I currently have no gear of my own, but I'm building preferences and direction while enjoying the playful, professional and insightful content you guys put out. Much love from Canada
Dan’s rig turns the Teles into thick, rich humbucker loaded guitars. Might be too much on a LP? Great tones! Mick’s rig tone is other worldly! Cheers from Las Vegas, USA.
That Tele clean tone. woof. Theres something in the low/low-mid area that compresses so lovely into that matchless. might be one of the best clean tones I've ever heard. I don't need a Matchless I can't afford a Matchless I don't need a Matchless I can't afford a Matchless... I will dream about that amp
Shootout Win to Strat, but Honorable mention for Best Pedal to Thropy, Thanks Guys, this was entertaining and Amazing tonal combinations and sequences, For Amp probably neither of Yours The Fargen DBC50
This reinforces everything I have learned - a guitar NEEDS to be loud, or at least "loud enough" so that the whole resonant feedback thing happens. Mick's tone at 42:25 with the Klon engaged was just SO good (remember this is an old weak single coil guitar) and when you get the sound and feel that you need, suddenly you really DO play better, which explains why he then went off on a Jimi trip probably without even realising it :O) This brings us back to the whole "save your hearing" thing. If the price of seeing true beauty was to slowly go blind, would you pay it? You can wear glasses which dull your eyesight, but then you might not see everything. Hmmm.... maybe with the right ear protection you can have it all.... Happy New Year to all at TPS, and subscribers!
What I truly appreciate is that you guys always sound like yourselves no matter what you play on or through. Mick, I dig that you can channel your influences without sounding exactly like them. I was watching a famous player on RU-vid the other day and his tone was exactly the SRV tone. It was like watching someone talking with another person’s voice. You use similar gear, but your voice is your own. I dig it, my man. Dan you are such a great player as well. I dig the journey you’re on and learn a lot from watching you do your thing. Thanks, gents. Keep strumming!
Absolutely awesome stuff from both of you guys - the emotional connection with the music comes across loud and clear in both of you but especially Dan in this film for whom the words wistful and longing come to mind - looked like there would be tears of joy at certain points! So amazing to see the passion in both of you, and yes you are in a privileged position - but you’re not lucky, you’ve both worked bloody hard for years to get where you are. Just do us all a favour and keep on doing what you do, sharing your experience and knowledge with the rest of us. The hour I watch you two is blissful. Thank you!
“tragically hilarious” - you said it! Self-indulgent yes - but your self-indulgence allows us the experience these sonic hights without spending similar bucks... so in a way your providing a public service 😃
After an event like this, (not just a show, but an event) with all the raw emotion flowing around, I would be totally fine with the two of you having a hug and a cry together. Because things like this are very special.
Mick''s rig is far away from only blues, jimi, etc. - Mike McCready and Stone Gossard form Pearl Jam would fly from Seattle to play that amp with those 3 pedals. And that strat... oh, boy! You killed it, MIck. Dan, that Tele is speaking to you. Don't hurt her feelings! Beautiful warm storm, guys! Best from Barcelona
Absolutely insane 😭😭 . Dan - I remember that telecaster and felt the same way - that’s a special one. Mick - that rig is otherworldly . It mixes simplicity and elegance in the best way.
Great episode. I absolutely love watching Dan ingest glorious guitar sounds. I love the way he loves tone. Personal opinion - Micks' guitar tone in this video was sublime.
This is the reason why we spend the money....TRULY EPIC TONES! What it be like if you had a corollary show. Same, but with five pedals in stead of three?
