Money saving way to descale a Bosch Tassimo coffee machine using citric acid. 

The tablets are so expensive compared to using citric acid. It's great for descaling your kettle as well.

You could use any mild acid like vinegar (or lemon juice) but I avoid it because of the smell/aftertaste. Citric acid is cheap and doesn't smell.

Have you tried cleaning the bar code reader panel? This has caused this issue for me in the past. To clean the bar code reader panel, open the lid, remove the pod/service disc and you should see a small clear plastic panel the size of the bar code on a pod. Clean this with a soft damp cloth so that the machine can read the bar codes properly.
