Moneyball Scenes Compared to TV Broadcast 

Want to clarify one thing on the video. Based on the comments I'm getting the feeling that a lot of people think I'm nit-picking or criticizing the movie. Not my intention... I think the movie is excellent and because it's a movie, a lot of the "inaccuracies" or decisions made by the director/editor are for ease of narrative, flow of the scenes, and overall making the movie work for general audiences. I just find some of the differences interesting and sheds some light into the filming process and decision making in the editing room. For instance, things being out of order in the movie versus the real game... I firmly believe they filmed them in order, but in editing it didn't flow as well as what they did in the final cut. If it makes the movie better dramatically and from a flow standpoint, then for the movie's sake that is a good decision. Some people may disagree, but I find enjoyment in pointing out "errors" or "inconsistencies" in some of my favorite movies, mostly because it sheds light into the filmmaking process and why certain decisions are made, and deepens my appreciation of the movie. In other words, "nit-picking" a movie to death for me is not a "Movie Sins" wag of the finger, but instead done out of an appreciation and understanding of the movie. That said, the two most important things in the game (Mike Sweeney's HR and Hatteberg's HR) were absolutely spot on. All of the other things pointed out were minor and really inconsequential to the overall plot and themes of the movie.

The director was definitely a huge Raul Ibanez fan.

I'm not even an As fan or anything, but the way the movie crafted the ending of that game just gives me chills.

I was at game 20. The thing I remember most about that night besides Hatteberg's home run was the electricity in the air driving into the parking lot. You could literally feel it where all the hairs on the back of your neck are standing up. And the stadium seemed like it ws pulsating as I walked toward it. Been to playoff football and basketball games and this game is number one on my list. A truly magical night in sports that I will never forget.

The most impressive thing about the movie to me was Casey Bond (guy who played Chad Bradford) did a great job in the movie replicating how the actual Chad Bradford pitched. I know Bond did play baseball before turning to acting, but that still can't be an easy thing to just go out there and throw the ball like that.

First he hits the game winning home run then goes on to be the guardian of the Galaxy

My biggest beef with Moneyball (book and movie) is it fails to mention their dominant starting pitching. Prime Zito, Hudson, Mulder, and Harang. Hitting is only half of the game.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?!!

In the back of the starting pitchers mind, he was probably thinking “I had an 11-0 lead, how tf am I not getting a W on my record!”

I didn’t know Tony Gwynn announced the game. Wish that was in the movie a little. Good to hear his voice again.

If it were really that dark on a baseball field, no one would be able to see the ball

Still one of the best baseball movies and a testament to the statement, “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”

The most accurate parts of the recreation in the movie were Justice falling into the left field wall on the Tucker double, Sweeney's home run, how he wasn't sure it left the park and taking a few steps and watching it before running the bases, the game tying base hit for the Royals, which landed in almost the exact spot and the throw home was damn near exact (almost looked like they used actual footage here), and Hatteberg stepping into the box, the ball, and the home run swing. Even the way Pratt ran the bases, all the way down to the celebratory arm swing and pump were almost exact to what Hattie did in the actual game.

Thanks for putting this together. Really well done. I wasn't quite ready to unexpectedly hear Tony Gwynn's voice today. Hit me right in the gut. Rest in peace, one of my favorite humans.

Fun Fact: Brent Mayne was on deck when Barry Bonds was walked intentionally with the bases loaded. Mayne lined out to end the inning.

One of my all time favourite sports movies. Gives me chills every time I see it. Reminds me why baseball is so beautiful

The acting on the faces of Brad Pitt, Johan Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman was magnificent on the last crack of the bat.. Pitt shocked and relieved, Jonah kind of confused and excited and Hoffman in disbelief and kinda think dang Billy was right

The world was robbed with Tony Gwynn passing so young.

This video was a jomboy breakdown. Great editing. You deserve a RU-vid plaque for the dedication to the details of this movie and actual footage. Personally I think the movie did a great job replicating the game. A lot of the flubs were because there needed to be some theatricals.

I'm a fan of how they Hollywooded the call for Hatteberg to PH. Art Howe engineered the 90s Astros, brought Bagwell and Biggio to the majors and won consistently. To have him as the de facto villain was my ONLY weakness for the movie. They even had Jonah Depodesta sneering at an ESPN report that gave Art credit. For them to give him that moment in this movie was big for me. Overall it's pure Magic. Truth is Stranger Than Fiction, right? If I was watching a fictional movie and the team blew an 11-0 lead with Tim Hudson on the mound only to win on a walk-off HR by the sweetheart player of the movie, ON THE DAY of the record win streak?? I would turn it off then and there.

Damn its crazy to hear Tony Gwynn's voice as the announcer for this game. Really cool to hear Tony Gwynn Jr. announcing the Padres games occasionally these days.

This game was much more exciting actually seeing it in person. The stadium went crazy when Hatteberg hit that walk off. The reason I went was because it was dollar ticket and dollar hot dog night.

I remember when this happened as a kid but obviously couldn’t remember the details of this game. Im surprised and glad they made it pretty accurate to what actually happened. I mean the real game for the record 20th win was such a crazy game anyway so you dont need to make it anymore dramatic. Most movies still would have made them blow like a 30 run lead, Hatterberg would have had a broken leg and then hit the homerun. He also would have promised come child cancer patient he would hit a homerun for him and they would have added the earthquake that happened in the world series or something trying to pass it off for “based off a true story”

Considering they are trying to get someone, not necessarily a spectator of baseball, to feel like one of the fans attending that night. really neat video.

Honestly, the biggest surprise in this was actually hearing that there is some Godspeed You! Black Emperor in the Moneyball movie at the end of the video. Edit: I"m an idiot and mistook This Will Destroy You for Godspeed. Everyone, point and laugh at the dunce.

I always liked baseball, played as a kid, but never really watched or followed the sport to close (watched the movie) but I just noticed at the end when Hatteburg was running the bases, and he swung his arms in celebration- that’s a super iconic moment in baseball, like I remember seeing that celebration highlight years ago- now I finally randomly know why, makes that movie even better to me now lol. Saw this movie twice. Pretty good-

I saw this movie in theaters as a preview (before the final cut was made). This game took 20 minutes of film and was full of cuts of seemingly every pitch/hit, etc… I’m glad they edited down to what you see in the final cut but I guess they had continuity issues that may have stemmed from cutting scenes that mimicked the actual game’s play-by-play.

This is an awesome video. Although everything isn't exact, Moneyball is imo one of the best sports movies of this generation. Especially when there wasn't another baseball movie at the time

Man I couldn't imagine what the fans, Billy, and especially the players felt when they had a 11-0 lead, and the Royals tie it up. Man that must of been gut renching. But every time I see the tie my heart drops, but when I see the win I start tearing up.

I thought it was a good movie. Haven't been a baseball fan since I was a kid. The comparison you show here, points out how real life can be as good as a script. I'm sure many who watched the move, thought this game was a product of the writers. Glad to see we were wrong.

This was a great movie for baseball. I don't like how the game is changing but it's nice to go back to moments like these and relive the game that was once so great.

I've seen the movie first time as a person who didn't know anything about baseball and it was one of the most fantastic sports movie ever. Now after I have taken some interest into it, it is still one of the better movies of sports I have ever seen.
