Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020 and Thailand from 2023. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult son's. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Vanlife and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023.

Hello, Bhante! I am a new Buddhist and, if you don't mind, I want to ask you a few questions. I started my practice from chanting, and I am trying to do it on a daily basis. So I want to ask about Samyoga and Magadha styles of chanting - which is more preferable for beginners? I guess I am doing chants in Samyoga style currently, but still I wanna know your opinion as a valid practicing monk which one I should use. And also I wanna ask you if it is possible to do parritas without invitation to devas and sending them off afterwards? Like my routine right now is 3xNamo Tassa, Taking the refuge, Namakara-siddhi Gatha x3 or more, Abhaya Paritta x3-7 and Dhajagga Paritta, and then Sadhu x3. Is it a valid working scheme for morning and evening routine? Thank you
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 11 месяцев назад
Hi, I'm not familiar with the chanting styles you mention. Chanting should be only what you understand and mean something to you. So get to understand the meaning or find the chanting in your own language and chant just what is useful.

Other than the difference in theology, what do you think is the greatest differences from the Buddhist monk of the Theravada tradition, and say, a Benedictine or a Cistercian monk? Thanks!
@TheMahayanist
@TheMahayanist 11 месяцев назад
It's my opinion that there's much less of an authority structure and disciplinary structure in Buddhist monasticism versus Christian or Hindu monks. That's why many of our monks have very independent views on controversial topics, such as on politics or on the authenticity or authority of certain texts, or particular meditation practices etc.
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 11 месяцев назад
Monks are renunciants. I have stayed in a Benedictine Monastery and was educated in a Catholic Monastery. Monks have discipline and faith which leads to renunciation. It is the theology that is the greatest difference.

Thank you Phra Dan for so kindly respond to my question. What do you advise if there's an army of red ants in my potted plants and a swarm of black ants under my flower pots in my house compound? What about bee hive in the tree in front of my house? If I just let it be, would they multiply and become out of control?
@marinatf-oy8rx

Hi! I hope you don’t mind me replying to your comment - I have found a few solutions that might deter insects in a gentle and non-harmful ways. I thought it might be useful to you to share some of these methods. A bit of a long message, but feel free to ignore it if it’s not useful. I’m sure bhante will have a much more meaningful answer. These are just a few practical solutions I found to work: 1. Moving the plants to a different location is sometimes enough to discourage ants 2. Placing a barrier, like diatomaceous earth or a dish filled with water around the pots, can deter ants without killing them 3. Using natural repellents such as lemon juice, peppermint oil, or cucumber peels is a good deterrent that might even work as compost later With regards to the beehive - I would leave it alone if it’s not causing harm. Bees are not aggressive unless provoked. If the hive is in a location that poses a danger, you might contact a professional to safely relocate the hive without harming the bees. As for the concern of these insects multiplying out of control - I have researched about this and it turns out that while they can multiply, they're also a part of the natural ecosystem and have their predators and natural checks and balances. If conditions are right, they might increase in number, but they'll also stabilise once they reach the carrying capacity of their environment or when food sources become scarce. Personally, I have certainly made mistakes in the past and killed a good few insects. You are doing a lot better than what I used to do by asking for advice from a monk. But, as a lay Buddhist now, I try to take gentle actions to manage these creatures. It also feels great to reflect on acts of compassion in meditation (one of the great pieces of advice I’ve received from Phra Dan) - it is a deeply comforting feeling to all of us when we know we’ve tried our best. Good luck! Sending you love and best wishes! Marina xx

Thank your question and thank you Marina for your answers. What Marina says, yes. In addition, well to elaborate on point 2 - the ants don't usually cross water so just rinsing down the area works very well. Some may get washed away but no harm is done it's just like rain, they can cope. Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu

@motivationmindsonline
@motivationmindsonline 11 месяцев назад
I understand you. It quite difficult to understand at first, however the intention of this concept is not actually 'reincarnation' of oneself. Since dharma teaches that there is non-self but things are forming due to all kind of elements and only exsist for a certain period of time before scatter. Dharma also teaches that what happening in our body both physical and mental are broken and reform every second. This process can be seen through Vipassana and one can understand the concept of reincarnation that is not kind of ME that die and ME that reborn again.
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 11 месяцев назад
We can not prove the principal of rebirth to another but we can experience it for ourselves leaving no doubt and requiring no belief.

You defended the spiritual traditions wisely. You never say Britian, but England. But Northern England is more culturally similar to Scotland than southern England. How do you understand, Bahante, the two-truths doctrine in respect of personal and national identity?
@englishmonk
@englishmonk 11 месяцев назад
I'm not sure I understand the two truths, it's more a Mahayana doctrine than Theravada which concentrates on one truth. As a nomadic monk there is little for me to identify with nationally or personally.

I acknowledge that Phra is doing great, as it's the modern way of Journaling, like to write or record as you discover, and somehow I like it. But I feel the old way such as writing is less distractive than RU-vid. Words of others are hypnotic in nature, and take a toll if you pay attention to it. I want to learn how he blocks that sort of distraction.
@MrResearcher122
@MrResearcher122 11 месяцев назад
@@umerafzal3330 RU-vid is quite new, but it is quite pernicious. It's addictive, and noisy for the mind, and questions and answers are circular, and not always beneficial. Just as the Monks, in the East and West, had to come to terms with TV in the 60s, they will have to come to terms with the Internet. It is like having TV in the monastery. It can not be useful to meditation.

Bhante is an Alms Mendicant, he has gone forth, left the householder life, he lives by 227 rules of conduct, his time online is measured and is obvious by the fact he doesn't talk about world events or gossip. He mentions he didn't carry a phone around as a layperson, or was dependent on a phone, and he is using the phone for connection because this is the age we live in. I don't believe you'll find him doom-scrolling Instagram mindlessly, for example, why would he? This is a mature Monk who has lived many lives and has now given it all up to let go of everything to realise Nibbana.
