Here is the shortest telling I’ve ever done about a Near Death Experience that I had about 28 years ago and what lead me to ordaining as a Buddhist monk.
The way I usually tell the story takes about an hour, so maybe if people want to hear more, I can add a few more details.

I had an Out of Body Experience that I don't think was near death, but otherwise very similar. I had vision and a sense of self, but no sounds, smells, tastes, or feeling.

Hi. I am wondering how your NDE can be reconciled with anattā? You were out of your body yet there was a sense of self?

@@bayreuth79 Good question. It is important to remember that the Buddha never says there is “no self”, just that what we try to label it as , “the reality is always other than that”. The belief in atta is basically an unchanging self, where as anatta is an understanding that everything is always changing, even our sense of who we are.

And, in fact, I do not believe in it. I was asking a philosophical question as to how he reconciles his experience (the NDE) with _his_ commitment to anattā, which on the face of it is incompatible with it. So, ironically, your assumption about me was _just_ a belief without any foundation whatsoever.

I had a different experience. I was 4 days out of surgery but my blood O2 level plummeted. I had had hip surgery. I remember the nurse telling me to breathe deeply because my breath was too shallow. - and she said afterward that my skin was white as the sheet and my lips and nails were blue. There was an argument outside my door between the doctor and his assistants who warned him that I was dying and would not pull through the night and needed a blood transfusion. For some reason he denied it - at first. When the nurse left, I got up out of bed, for no real reason, and began to walk and realized that the pain in my hip was gone. I walked to whom I thought was a nurse, (she was wearing white, that's why) whom I assumed was looking at my med chart.I approached her, she looked down at, what I realized at closer inspection was a book, then told me to go up the stairs. From the moment I left the bed to the time I approached the nurse whom I later realized was an angel, I had shed about 40 years. I was young and healthy again. I ran up the stairs and had no doubt that I was now in Heaven. No doubt at all. I didn't even bother to look back at earth or my body - I was so glad to be away from it all. I saw a cluster of gorgeous, unearthly flowers that shown with light from the inside out, like diamonds hidden within the interior of the petals shooting their light outward. So beautiful. Then people, I assumed were new arrivals like myself, singing praises to God and everyone was so joyful, including me. I didn't see God, but I KNEW He was there, looking at us from the massive light that poured down on us, happy to see His children being happy. But then - sadly - I had to go back. I pleaded with God if I could please stay and His answer was firm. "No. because (and He named one of my children) would not be able to handle it." So, I submitted to God's will and for the sake of my child, obediently allowed myself to go back. Skip forward 5 years. My friend's husband died, doctor noted time of death, but then the husband came back and sat bolt upright. "You'll never guess where I've been," he told everyone around his bed in the hospital. "I was in Heaven." And then he proceeded to described EXACTLY the same flowers I had seen, right down to the color and the diamonds that seemed to pierce through the petals with their light. That floored me. I knew I had been in Heaven, but his experience cemented it for me. And no, I never told anyone about the flowers. One other thing - while in Heaven, I realized with such a stark clarity that we are all related - everyone on the planet is our brother or sister. Everyone. The Russians in Siberia, the Chinese in their wet markets, the African mom getting water from the village well, the French having wine - all of us come from one single source, the Living God. We are all related. God loves us all equally. Perfectly. Why can't we love one another the same way? Because many of us have forgotten God and lost the treasure of His love - we've denied it, we've buried it with our philosophies, our religions, our customs, our stupidity, our hatred, our unforgiving attitudes. This made me very sad when I finally left the hospital, because I was made so firmly aware of God's love for me and for everyone else on the planet - His arms are around us all, wayward though we are - but we have been pushing His arms away, pushing Him away because we think we know better, and look at the mess and wars and hatred and pain we suddenly find more attractive than God's perfect love!

Thank You for sharing. I've never been to where You went nor had an NDE myself but i can tell You that i know Your experience is true because i have come to know the Love of God through Jesus, the Christ. Not the religious philosophy of love we often hear preached or quoted. Ive struggled a great deal with Christianity because though the teachings of the scriptures are true which i later learned from Jesus Himself the important emphasis is often minimized to a disclaimer while interpretations of religiosity & judgment are shouted forth & held to. For a long time ive felt thier divisiveness & struggled to reconcile it still knowing & hearing the Word of Heaven that You spoke of preached & knowing that certainly never stopped being true & necessary to hear. Ive come to understand God's love & grace & compassion & mercy so much in my own time with the Lord that i now understand that not only does God know & understand but He has Grace for them all and so too should I. In this world we are disabled......blind, deaf & cognitively unaware spiritually or of Spiritual things. To expect any understanding from them would be like expecting a blind person to see, a paralyzed person to walk, etc... Only God can do that & heal us which we see from Jesus' testimony. We who are beginning to see have our stories to tell, our testimonies of God, of His enveloping Love that is beyond all of those petty divisions we & churches & races & governments & doctrines & philosophies & sciences divide ourselves into & from. We are children of the Light & of Love & it is up to us to shine forth in that Love. Some of us are brighter than others. We're all at different places in our understandings & willingness to freely live it out. The church knows of the Light & Love & can quote it but doesn"t as a whole actually do it. Its because though they talk of it incessantly they dont actually know what being "in the Spirit' or 'born of His Spirit" truly means. Still Grace & Forgiveness & Patience & Understanding from God reigns supreme. Of course there are those who live it out & they will never be famous & this is what we were all called to do from the beginning. Produce the good fruit of Heaven, the Garden of Eden so that we all may live it here. I thank You so much for sharing & letting me do the same. May Heaven & that fullness of Love pour out from within You to everyone You come into contact with. May we all be Love. Peace.

@@eze8608 - Dear EZ E - YES!!!! The Lord Christ Jesus!!! After I went through my near death (or dead and back again) experience, I began to read the New Testament in the original Greek (classical Greek) from 300-350 AD. And that is when the clarity of who Christ is struck me like nothing every did all those former years of formal Bible Study in college or church sermons. Christ Jesus - The Word - is the same God who created the Heavens and the Earth - and the same One who redeemed us if we wish to partake of that redemption, at such a heavy cost to Him. I was struck especially by John 1: 12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:" In the original Greek, it reads, "But as many as took Him in, to them He gave the authority to become the children of God, those who believe on His name." His salvation is a gift - but it is a gift we must actively take. It is very precious. 'Take' is an active verb, not a passive verb such as 'receive." The Lord has a gift on the table, free for all - but only those who actually get up out of their chairs and take it will have it. He does not throw it to us as we sit in our chairs where we will just receive it with no effort on our own. I thought that was very deep. Further, John 1:1 - in the original - "In the Beginning was the Word. And God was toward the Word. And God was the Word." That cemented for me the fact that Christ is not only the Son of God, but the Living God Himself. And His love, those arms - all belong to Him who shed His precious blood and died for us so that He could give us eternal life. Thank you so much for your response which was heartfelt. I'm so glad you have learned of God's love and grace and compassion and mercy.There is a wideness in His mercy. You and I and those who love the Lord have a job to do till He comes back to retrieve us and bring us Home - forever - and that is to be examples of His love to a lost and hurting world. I wish you were my neighbor! May God keep you safe in the hallow of His mighty and loving hand.

I have had at least two very profound out of body experiences and I totally understand when you talk about consciousness being independent of the brain and body. I enjoyed your video. The part about seeing Hanuman, Ganesh, and Shiva was mindblowing considering you had no inventory of them yet. I had an experience in Taos, NM where I thought I would die. I had to fight all night, and felt I'd really leave my body if I did not stay conscious. Much like in war movies, when I thought I was a goner, I realized how much I loved my Mother. How much I could have given compared to what I actually gave. Thanks. (Also named Todd and from New Hampshire!)

I loved that. I believe that every NDE/OBE is destined and that there is a specific message tailored to each experiencer. And in this message there is validation, assuming that was the purpose. In other words, some ppl have them planned out prebirth to serve as reminders or goal posts. How else to prove it was real than to give the experiencers meaningless symbols only to find out later that their meaning is very personal and meaningful. I had an OBE once and unfortunately it was cut short because it happened during meditation and I got really excited when my third eye began showing me flying through a tunnel of golden light. That excitement ended the experience and I felt myself get sucked back into my body. I searched everywhere for a similar story to what I saw and felt (golden tunnel with grid lines and I felt intense vibrations of energy for a week afterwards). Even with the internet at my fingertips I found nothing that explained what this tunnel was about or the vibrations either. It wasn’t your stereotypical tunnel of light because it had grid lines. Anyway, like 8 years later I Found something online talking about the “astral tube” and it was exactly what I experienced! Then a few years later I was on Reddit and someone was describing the grid lines and golden light and vibrations that proceeded it. They confirmed I was out of body and astral projecting. I knew it was real, it was HYPER real, but receiving that validation meant the world. ❤

I had a unconditional love experience, I kept asking every night before I went to sleep to truly know what unconditional love felt like, One morning when I woke up I had the most unbelievable feeling, it was like liquid love , that is the only way I can describe it,you could have done all kinds of mean things to me and I would have still loved you, as a matter of fact my wife wasn't to happy with me ,but didn't argue with her ,I just was nice all day long . It only lasted for about 6 or 7 hours but it was the most incredible feeling of love I have ever had , wished it never went away, I would be a better person if it stayed, I still try though to be that way ,but it is so much easier with what I woke up with, liquid love ❤️.

Sorry about my English because I’m from Brazil. When I was 17 I was on a huge crash car with a truck. My conciens go out of my body. After that everything change in my life. Later I discovered you can do that when you go to sleep. Relax you body and concentrate in you hart. Imagine your hart. Your feelings will be lazy and a great sound appears in your mind like a PIIIIIII. In this moment you can wake up. But you going to see you are in another dimension. You can fluctuate. This you can do every day. Without fear. It’s normal. At the beginning is dificult but one day it’s happens. This shows that we aren’t just a body. Happy 2021 for you.

After ayahuasca I had this experience of my consciousness leaving my body it hovered up and right of my head. I was standing in front of a mirror in a bathroom looking through my eyes but nothing behind them. I was observing myself from above and had no attachment to the body , no thoughts hard time even recalling my name. I was an it , It could have been a shoe 👞 lol After about 10 mins ( guessing because there is no awareness of time) I had a thought better go back in the body and get back to work. What a liberating experience. We are a soul having a temporary human experience

Do you member any of the details of your friends story? What interest me, I’ve met many people who have had out-of-body experiences (including one gal who during a storm was tossed off a boat at sea and who amazingly was tossed back on board to have her shipmate hear her being slammed against the cabin door...), but I have yet to meet anybody to reported having a fear that their body would leave and being stuck without a body...

hi yes, doug had eaten too many amanita muscaria mushrooms on quadra island in the seventies . he said he was in this place where these little people were around him and strange singing could be heard, also they wanted him to stay but he knew he had to go, also it was a pleasant experience . I genuinely believe that , if not a monk , this lovely gentleman would be ideal, to simply talk , speak ,or narrate . I only ever thought that I could only listen endlessly to the voice of Morgan Freeman , but this mans voice is simply SO soothing and comforting . All things are possible. I’m 99.9 % sure I was not asleep, as there was no breaks between the events, like Todd leaving the room and the hostess coming in and asking me to eat... me seeing the figures in the flame and having to use the restroom.... But the visions certainly seemed real, while at the same time I wonder how much the mind while it was under the influence of a high fever, created the visions too. I’m not too worried about understanding the why or how.

This sounds similar to Psychologist Carl Jungs narrative about a patient of his who had a Kundalini awakening.She saw a black snake that was in her abdomen that rose up to her throat chakra.After 10 sessions with Jung she felt the snake exit her throat thru her mouth. Translation her kundalini Shakti was stuck in her 3rd chakra,but broke free & moved into her 5th chakra giving her a more powerful voice in her expanding spiritual evolutionary trajectory.

Thank you so much for sharing! I specifically searched for a Buddhist NDE experience bc so far, I have only seen people who NDE and meet Jesus. I am trying to decipher what is the deciding factor in what Ascended Master or God people meet. Is there something in the persons lifethat primed that person to have THAT specific experience. I am wondering if there are practicing Buddhists or maybe people that grew up in Buddhist culture that die and meet Jesus. Or vice versa. Once, I was in a meeting and a lady channeled a consciousness that expressed itself as multiple in one. And it said its name didnt matter bc an identity is like changing your dress. If you weren't a Buddhist, were you influenced in any way by it or perhapse had an experience that was geographical? Like the belief system in the area where you got sick, that specific ENERGY becam your experience? I am beginning to see all religions and practices as blind people examining different parts of an elephant. Perhapse the beings or consciousness on the other side merely allow us to identify them any way we want bc that isnt what matters. The lesson is what matters? 🤔 Perhapse in this form we get a false sense of security from identifying things. It makes us feel safe. I have heard stories about unloving beings pretending to be family members to get permission to be in someones house. As well as them pretending to be children to play with children but attempting to get the child to hurt themself. So i question what is on the other side that feels loving and like someone we know. What happens if a person doesnt want to come back from the NDE? How pushy will the beings get if the person doesnt want to? Is it in any way in the beings best interest if that person goes back? Or is it really all about the persons best interest for their growth? Along that line, if gods were real, why do they need worship? What is it really that they get from worship? As a parent, I never required my children to worship me. Cant say i am worthy of it. 😂 But it makes me uncomfortable to think about loving, selfless gods demanding worship. Why? Are we batteries?🤔 Are our good attitudes food? I wonder, "Who is really running this show anyway?" And, It seems like all levels of what we call reality is nothing more than layers of a dream. I call it a dream bc Increasingly, I will think about something, like something i want and it shows up out of nowhere. Or i think a statement and then it echoes in my environment. I think, perhapse, the consciousness engages us in a language we understand with symbolism tailored to us. If i tell Source thst i am having trouble in an area, please send me a messenger. Some sort of critter will absolutely show up. And its personality and way will be the question rephrased as an answer. This happens bc i believe the statement, "Knock and the door shall be opened." People don't usually knock unless they believe someone is home. Right? I have treated this as a curious child would and made requests, while EXPECTING a response in all kinds of places. Once inside a business. I thought, "This is so exciting, i wonder whst it will be!" Sure enough, this lady was standing in line staring at me as i was at the register. When she got up to me she said, this is going to sound weird, but. I gotta tell ya. You have a white stag in your aura. I can see it over your right shoulder." Wow! I have also had animals walk up to me, a herd of deer, a goose on my roof, a massive worm chased me across the floor, in january, in the north, I found a butterfly ALIVE in my kitchen balancing on a knife edge. I had a wren fly into my purse. A couger come out of the woods. Thats just the beginning of the list. Other people have witnessed some of it. But it is when i ask a question. So, perhapse, what realtiy, what deities or practices we are presented with may be what we will work best with. What do you think? Yes, this is a novel. Lol

Meditation is one factor of the 8 fold path. Breaking it down into three groups, there are practices that promote Morality, Concentration and Wisdom. In the west we trend to stress the meditation aspect of the practices but in traditional Buddhist cultures the path is a whole system. If you are interested, Google the 8 Fold Path, that should give you some good info.

My mother had an OBE, floating above herself, for no reason that I know about. Her main thought was that she had to get back in to her body, which she did.

@J B She didn't think her body would get up and leave her, she felt like she wouldn't be able to get back into it, and then her body would die. Her OBE was spontaneous, she was in good health, unlike an NDE where one might not want to return to a badly damaged body.

I do think it interesting that I had the visit from Shiva, Hanuman and Ganesh and I had never consciously seen them before or knew who they were. I kind of felt like those deities were in the consciousness of the local people and that is why I saw them. Maybe if I had been in Ireland I would have seen Catholic Saints. About Todd, I always assumed it was my subconscious mind that created the vision, but I don’t claim to know for sure.

I did go back and do that same hike several years later, to Kala Pathar near the base camp of Mt Everest. Other than that, I hiked once a year in the Sierras for for about a decade.

I’ve read a lot of mountaineering books, and high altitude especially being above what the call the “Death Zone” people are notorious for making poor decisions. I was at bout 19,000 feet at the highest, which it’s just hard to breathe at that altitude. My NDE felt just as real as your average moment, but more pleasant because all the feelings associated with the body were gone - no heat/cold, no pain, no sense of weight.... Going back into the body felt like getting hit by a ton of bricks as all my pain immediately returned and I passed out.

@@Jotipalo - Ha, I am not sure what I mean :). Being a spiritual seeker with a recently rekindled drive to learn/transform/seek Truth, I guess I was just wondering if within your climbing or trekking experience you had any other altitude sickness moments that were different from the NDE? I understand, though, and it seems synonymous to what I have found in my meditative practice. I have some sessions that are essentially observations of the mind of thoughts coming in and out for most of the time. Other times where I can more easily quiet the mind, and begin observing some curious and fascinating visuals (which could still be mind trying another trick to keep me engaged with it). I try to not label anything as the visuals occur, in order to keep the mind silent, and in reflection they are 'different', but they aren't ineffable, as I'd imagine communing within the unitive state might be, but I guess just trying to imagine what it would be like is already missing the point. :) As Lao Tzu taught, "The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao; / The name that can be named is not the eternal name." 🙏

@@AbscentOrange Lovely reflections, and so true. I think it is okay to ask, but just be weary of the answers your mind tells you. I give a lot less importance to the “unusual” experiences I had early on in my practice, than I do today. Those experiences were “what they were”, or at least memories of what I think happened, and they have had an effect on what I’m doing today, but they are also just that “past experiences”. Asking questions and analyzing situations is a primary cause for Wisdom to arise.

I’m successfully recovering from mental illness, and I believe these “entities” you encountered, (also very common in psychedelic experiences) are usually helpers who bring tailor-made messages to us; it’s much broader than just archetypes; they draw on all kinds of meanings in our lives. From my own experience I guess that their small size may have been meant to convey “kind of funny; not threatening”; the coffin has an obvious meaning of death, which was repeated by your friend; “something is killing you”. I wonder if the reference to snake includes the idea of self-care in the same way he rescues snakes; the white colour of the snake to me suggested something that perhaps lives in the dark, like a cave animal? I can’t really guess what the meanings would be for you; but I have a process where I ask myself what images like this remind me of; I kind of know when I’ve understood the meaning. Drilling the hole in the coffin reminded me of medieval trepanning. I’m Wiccan not Buddhist; so I believe in spirit guides and so on. That threshold of eternity is so interesting to me!! Good point. I’d add, “always seeking instead of just being.” What your wrote is part of what I got from that experience. Interesting that on my second trip to Nepal, after reaching the summit of Kala Patthar, that was one of the first moments I consciously remembered not feeling desire. It was like getting back and doing that hike and making it to the top had driven me, and now that was complete, I was without desire (at least for a few hours 😙). Thanks for your comment.

Until the OBE, which doesn't require death, the description of events sounds more like hallucinations from a fever. NDE'S are closer to reality in that there are life reviews and discussions of life events. Also seeing living or dead relatives and traveling thru a tunnel. But thank you for sharing.

It sounds like you lifted out of your body slightly, probably a result of your pain and fever. This is why you saw more of the non physical being's around you that you usually do not see. I think your mind was a bit affected by the fever also. A bit of both at play, it sounds like. But what matters is you expanded your view and understanding, this will continue now.

I searched all the time for near death experience from Buddhist perspective there is many stuff of Christians on YT but I'am not into Christianity cause of the many logic flaws and the idea of beliving into superstition repels me very much beside the missionaric nature and the demand to give up your sovereignty and bow down to an supposedly all mighty being and to give your destiny in the hands of that being so the superior to inferior dynamic I don't like. Also critics from New age pointed out that the christian spiritual cluster is corrupted and that you get entangled with that beings who manipulate and control you. There is a article about that from Cameron day called why I'am no longer a light worker. There is a spiritual warfare going on about the "consciousness es" of this planet. At least this is my now knowledge of the matter. I know that I had done many wrong things I must excuse for particular to my mother and sister. I hope that also some others really excuse from the bottom of their heart to me so I can give real forgiveness to them so that the matters are resolved and so each of us can go on with his/her journey.

Interesting story but we leave our bodies in this way every night when we dream. If we consider the brain as part of the body then you didn’t leave the body because the brain was still active albeit functioning differently to normal. I don’t see that it’s possible to have any evidence of leaving the body unless the brain is dead and the neurologically-encoded memory is destroyed, in which case the person/soul does not ‘return’ to tell us about it.

Ya, I don’t have any evidence just my experience, and that was nothing like a dream. I read an article a few years ago that scientist were speculating that out-of-body experiences were actually happening in the mind. I thought that was funny because in Buddhism the mind isn’t always associated with the brain or the body. The mind, memories and things of this nature are too broad to be considered to be in the brain, so in that sense - the out-of-body experience could have been in the mind, but the scientist are wrong to think ‘the mind is in the body’. Again, I only have my experiences.
