The Daily Mail hated it, so that must mean something.
Monkey Dust (2003-2005), created by Harry Thompson and Shaun Pye, is a dark, animated comedy produced for the BBC. Emerging from the minds of creative geniuses and jaded cynics, with hilarious jokes, biting commentary, and a unique visual presentation, it is one of the finest examples of British humour, social satire and adult animation ever made. But for too long, it has languished in obscurity, only remembered by its enthusiastic cult following.
Until now, hopefully.

I remember watching this when it was broadcast. Watching parts of it back have made me realise why my sense of humour is so dark. CJ - please check out the Chris Morris series of Jam. It really was the precursor to monkey dust in style, content and soundtrack, and surpassing it in darkness at many points.

I read the second and third series' have never been released because of Harry Thompson passing away. But BBC Three did start getting cold feet with their animation sadly, they commissioned another, PopeTown and never aired a single episode. But a problem with the other "adult" shows was they always tried emulating another established show like South Park, Family Guy or The Simpsons.

Larry Bundy Jr I personally don’t think all of them were trying to be like them although the ones that copy Simpsons gets praised anyways by the animation community so it’s kind of confusing in a way fun fact family guy actually started off as a Simpsons clone before slowly growing into its own thing Personally I prefer my adult cartoons to be creative I don’t care if it’s vulgar or deep I just want variety I’m also not a fan of adult anime that much since most of them follow a similar genre granted I know a lot of cartoons also do that but at the very least most cartoons have their own voice to stand out on its own merits with anime’s they go by genre The worst adult anime’s are the ones that focus on high school clubs with nothing happening most of the time they all so cliched in my eyes

I LOVED this series, it was so delightfully melancholy. It came around at just the right time (not just in comedy but also for my age) and gave me an insight not only into dark comedy and alternative electronic music. A highlight for me is the end of series 1 where they use Pulp's 'Sunrise' in a very surprising way. When I found the 2nd and 3rd series were to remain unreleased I made it my mission to find them via.... other means and to this day they lie dormant in an external drive, waiting for me to show them to any curious friend who happens to still be round mine at 3 in the morning.

I'm not a huge fan of the old "picks no sides, fires at everyone" mantra, as it's the common excuse of some of the most crap and lazy, edgy jokeless 'comedies' out there. However I did catch a bit of this one when it was on and it looked sorta interesting and seemed kinda funny, so it doesn't seem like one of those and I might give it a go. Cheers for reminding me of it. I also think the idea that ridiculous censorship is a new thing is a bit overblown. Wasn't that always a thing? Whenever people say "you couldn't make X these days" I kinda just simply have to call bollocks on that. Plenty of stuff gets made these days, of all the varieties. Maybe it's the difference of being on TV or not that they're talking about? Could be that, I haven't had a TV for years now, maybe TV's gone all turtle strategy in the midst of its decline I dunno. Far as I'm concerned, the excuses given for ridiculous censorship get shuffled around but the amount of it remains at a pretty even level in general. There always were self-interested idiots wanting things banned without good cause, and there always were genuine folks wanting things banned with good cause (even if banning's not usually the best actual strategy), and the one would always play on the sympathies garnered by the other like a parasite. It's got a lot more called-out these days (with likewise a big helping of similar self-interested idiots among the ones calling it out... bit like censorception), but it doesn't seem to have actually got worse. These people were around before and barring a giant cultural shift will still be around tomorrow. I mean if anything I enjoy the fact that people can swear on the youtubes. Because it doesn't get highlighted as special language any more, it's just normal speaking like it should be. And the youtubes are hardly the least unreasonably censored place on the internets, in fact probably one of the most. But that's a shift in targets I do enjoy, because that always felt so ridiculous to me. However yeah, now it's music copyrights meaning that nobody gets to see a cartoon series and that's a bunch of nonsense for sure. Somebody tell me again how my anti-copyright viewpoint is the one that's hurting artists, and not the other way around? No really. Copyright's a plague on creativity and needs to just be scrapped entirely. People forget that it isn't some thing that was always around forever, and that people made livings making art before it existed (probably a lot better livings than these days too). Fuck copyright.
@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel 3 года назад
@Lucius Fawkes fair is fair, and that's exactly what's not fair about it. The "this is mine" of it. Look at the situation here. People aren't allowed to enjoy a cartoon because some technical nonsense had a time limit about some music. Whose income has that protected, exactly? And why is protecting income even the point? Hairstylists make a living without copyrighting hairstyles. Wrestlers make a living without copyrighting finishing moves. It's all so arbitrary and I can point to no examples of it helping anyone, and think of only examples of it hindering someone trying to do something like a reinterpretation of some variety (remix, adaptation, etc) or including a piece of work in another piece of work (such as here). When you can only think of something doing bad in the world, what good is it?

Why does every adult cartoon need to have *god awful* art style?
@pagatryx5451
@pagatryx5451 4 года назад
Because animation/cartoons are seen as children stuff in the west. Awful art styles make people see it as something not meant for kids. That's all there is to it. If you want good adult animation, you have to watch anime simply because that stigma doesn't exist over there. Dark comedy isn't really their thing in Japan though but there is a plethora of adult shows that aren't entirely comedy, an oldy is cowboy bebop but there is more recent shows. If you don't want to try out anime (and you really should) the only example of an adult show I can think of with good animation in the west is Castlevania. S1 was fairly average but it gets a bit better and the animation is alright. Nothing mind blowing but not awful like you see with comedy shows.

Although this series seems to have a very smart, it doesn't seem to be my thing. I don't have very good experiences with foreign comedies that rely too much on a culture that I don't know, even the occasional american joke of "That person is like X celebrity" makes me go "Who is that?" and I never hear about X celebrity ever again. Now, this doesn't mean I can't found fun it, but it just doesn't seem my cup of tea. Great video nonetheless, CJ.

That's how it goes when you watch a British reviewer type youtuber doing a passion project. Also it's completely centered around Britain, apart from the fact alot of these themes are what affects modern western society on a broader scale. I'd say you would enjoy it as apart from British accents and British TV programs and other stuff referenced, it looks not too specific.
