It took me a little while to realize the vectorscope only shows cool lissajou shapes when it's in stereo, which sucks because I was telling people to play try it with guitar and it's highy likely they will just see the single line and be like wtf is so cool about this. I'm only just noticing it shows -L and -R. I just use it as a vague visual aid

Check out OBS studio for desktop recording. it's a great open source program that lets you do pretty much everything you could ever want for desktop recording. It's nice being able to select from most encoding format via ffmpeg and you can manually lay out/size individual programs windows. so like you wouldn't even see the desktop if that's what you wanted. There's a chance it won't capture the input if you use an audio interfaces ASIO. but I mean you could just switch to FL ASIO or if you have 4 i/o you could do like I do and route 1/2 output to 3/4 input and listen through 3/4 in FL

Very nice tutorial! I'm really like your channel, but i miss a tutorial about songstucture and how to layout a song. I've had been glad if you could make a tutorial or give some tips about how to layout a song. :)

bro thanks for your share, but I have a problem as I try like in the video 😫 when the original track and the cloned track play together, there only exist the right channel ( if the right channel of the original track was taken down minus 1, then there only exist the left when two tracks play together. I guess the minus one canceled the original one since they are in the same channel. So it definitely works when merged into mono but in stereo mode the cancellation happens too which is not wanted. I m really confused and maybe there something I didn't notice cuz I see no cancellation in the video. Could you please check on this.Really hope for your reply. 😔I know the comment is late but i really wanna figure it out. Appreciated!❤

the reason you're getting phase cancellation is because you're using the same sound. you have inverted the polarity on one side of the copy, so it is cancelling that out on the mono copy of your original sound. in this video, OP is using two different sounds. similar, but different. hence the lack of phase cancellation on his mono signal. if it's not too late, try swapping the copy for a completely different or similar sound, and the results might be similar to what is shown in this video

You are altering the phase of your stereo clap and it sounds bad on its own (imo) but what if I only have one sound that I want to widen and nothing to layer it with?

+BlackAera Using different samples may produce a better result. I haven't used this technique much, but I do think it's interesting. Regarding your question, I would suggest trying the "Haas Effect". Just make sure the delay time is long enough to prevent a phasing effect in mono. You could also try adjusting the "phase" setting on the Stereo Shaper, but I don't usually like the result of that. If you only want subtle stereo, sometimes adding a wide reverb is enough.

***** I only wanted to see what you got. I have come across this problem before and found a neat solution for it. The Haas Effect works for stereo but I want my tracks to be mono compatible so usually I would just add a reverb but what if I don't want the reverb sound just more wideness? When you send your original signal to 2 new Inserts and put a lowcut EQ and a Delay 2 on Insert 2 with the dry signal at 0%, no panning or stereo offset, no ping pong, feedback set to the lowest, time set to 0.01 and then copy that entire Mixer Insert state to Insert 3 and pan one hard left and the other hard right with the phase inverted , you will have a very short and fast delay that acts as a side copy of Insert 1. Because the settings are exactly the same, they will cancel out when you sum to mono.

I am looking for a way to make my stereo sound good on my mono smart phone since a lot of people search for music to buy while on their smart phones. So I am hoping that if they use only the mono phone speaker this will work and if they use headphones with their phone that will work too. Or would you have some other technique that you would use for this problem?

Victor Krottner If it good in mono, it will sound good in stereo.

but now your snare would lose gain when played back in mono right?

In theory this is true.. But if youre mid and side mixes are well balanced you just hear a change and not loss.. I use the free Voxengo Span in mid/side mode .. very easy to see if your mid/side missing frequency content.. Good for solo instruments and full mixes.. Hope that helps.. Peace

+battery chicken Depending on the samples, it would most likely lose some gain. If it seems to be losing too much, then you're probably making it too wide anyway to the point it would sound unnatural. It's pretty common for stereo sounds in general to lose some gain in mono, you just want to make sure that it isn't enough to ruin the mix.

So if you have a mono vocal track could you clone it and add stereo effects to the cloned vocal track and then do the stereoshaper thing you did so it goes to mono on a cellphone speaker ?
@IVTheFourth
@IVTheFourth 8 лет назад
That should work depending on your goal, but what I might do is clone the track and make one act as the mid (which you would hear when downmixed to mono) and the other one as the side (which would disappear in mono). You could add (non-stereo) effects to the side channel so that it is different from the mid and causes a stereo effect.
