There's a difference between engineers building cars and the run of the mill builder, toss in the fact that you're really using the near minimum amount of metal working tools, and things are going to move slowly forward. I wish one of my projects went slow and smooth I came out great, rather than quickly, chaoticly, and full things I would have done differently had I known.

True enough about the small goals, or at least the getting bored and back burnering your project. I personally built a VW trike from the crappiest beetle you've ever seen. I have myself 30 days to do it out I knew it'd never get done. 23 days later and I was riding it! Handbrake only but it worked. Fully ridable by day 30. Then I let my brother ride it. Through a chain link fence... I started redoing it better, lower, more fiberglassy. But alas it got back burnered... For like 33 years... I finally came back to it and like the first time I started over and built it in 30 days. It's not on the back burner but since I got hit by a BMW it hasn't been the same. Time to start anew! And that's the fun part.

an original mini has an 80 inch wheelbase...and even with 140+hp on 165/70 x 10 tires...not too twitchy...depending on how you set the suspension. I definitely would recommend slight rear toe-in. Your dad is a wizard with the angle grinder. The bridge you reference is the Tacoma - Narrows bridge.... Clecos are the greatest invention; totally worth the money.

I had a MK1 MX5. It was a hoot, but one of the biggest cockups I did was fit wide arches and 16x8" wheels wrapped in 225 width Yokohama's. If you were going for it on a hot summers day, the car would stick to the road like waste paper bin chewing gum to a curious Labradors face, but if you even had to slow down behind a weekend driver for a couple of miles, the tyres would cool down enough that they'd grip worse than the 185 wide Michelin/15" combo i had on it before. It wasn't confidence inspiring to know that the tires were only just getting up to their working temperature, and anything that cooled them off slightly would be enough to have noticeably uneven grip side to side and front to back.
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Год назад
Tractability is highly underrated probably because it's nuanced and hard to put a number on so people don't talk about it but for a road car the world is unpredictable enough without not knowing what the car is going to do
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 Год назад
@@OliverPickard Oh yeah. When hooning around on the limit of grip, it's nice if the limit of grip doesn't keep drastically changing. Half way around a corner isn't the place to find out that the 30 zone you've just plodded through was just long enough for the tires to cool off your nice grippy tyres and turn them into something with all the stickiness of Bakelite doughnuts again.

Were you able to get an adequate amount of ackermann geometry in the steering? I was thinking with the short wheelbase and front steer, the outer steering tie rod placement may prove difficult to get outboard far enough. As an old drag racer from the US, I really enjoy watching your vids for something way outside my wheelhouse. You guys are knocking it out of the park with the engineering details and build quality as well. Nice job and looking forward to watching some test drives on the near future!

The Power Plant Frame (PPF) in the miata does little to nothing for torsion stiffness. It's a "C section" beam which isn't very effective at resisting torsion. It's there to keep the diff pinion angle parallel to the transmission and also for the manufacturing process as the body and the drivetrain/suspension get assembled separately and then put together
@SateenDuraLuxe
@SateenDuraLuxe Год назад
When you stiffen a sheet of metal by adding creases or bends into it, you're technically not removing a resonant frequency, you're shifting it up into a higher frequency. A flat sheet of metal is not very stiff, it's actually quite wobbly, so it's not very hard to get it to resonate by wobbling it at a few Hz by hand. Making the chassis as stiff as possible might not be the worst thing when it comes to resonant frequency. Low frequency sounds and vibrations won't affect it, only super high frequencies, but the nice thing about that is that high frequencies don't travel as far, and they have far less energy than a low frequency of the same volume. So they're much easier to damp out by simply adding a sheet of rubber or Dynamat in a few strategic locations.
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Год назад
I'll be using dynamat as well

You've described the motor hobbies pretty well- every year thousands start a new "project car", fewer than one in five get finished enough to run and drive. Yet one group seems to finish all of them; there are many reasons for that- "life got in the way" is a major one- cars get started, the family has anew baby or a job change and all the priorities change. Some of those failures stem from over confidence in not realizing what a complicated and interrelated piece of machinery a merely drivable car is. SEMA cars get that way because vendors seeking a "draw piece" commission builders to build "talking pieces" that will not be allowed to run during the show- and they contract as late in the game to prevent as much "leakage" about their "draw piece". Some of the professionals carp about the same thing- most of them have trouble hitting big show dates , sometimes with three year plans. You and your dad are working on a vanity project and both know that if you let it stop completely the odds of a running finish get way smaller; neither of you are having any of that. So, I'll be here to see what you lot can do with the modern version of stone knives and bearskins for tools and parts. Carry on, gentlemen!
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Год назад
"stone knives and bear skins" haha thanks
@fredericrike5974
@fredericrike5974 Год назад
@@OliverPickard thank the good doctor from Star Trek- that's where I cribbed the line from! I did think it was an appropriate way to characterize the effort you and your dad are making- and an outstanding one at that! I'm 70 odd years old; when I first started tinkering with cars I was about thirteen. Back in those antique times, if you wanted speed parts you made most of them from what was lying around in your or your friends garages where today in the States, they just whip out a credit card and order up a car load of parts. I won't deny it dose take some skill to do even that and get a good result, but it just isn't the same as what you and dad do. And watching the two of you work on this project together is also both one of the great aspects of the car hobbies as well as a continuation of traditions. I hope the electric car coming doesn't change that. Be well, be bold and keep you fingers out of the metal working!
