Nice video 👍🏼 you're one of the few that explain things to the average person who's new to H.T. and can easily understand. Fyi: Earthquake has one ( the CP8 still available on Amazon) that Monoprice almost carbon copied except the Earthquake is 300 watts and dips to 20hz and won the 2009 product of the year.
Fair out-of-the-box review. I do have this sub and can tell you that it's a little disappointing as it comes from the factory, even after good break-in time. It has a "boominess" that seems to be inherent in the port and small box design. What I did: I first thoroughly filled just the box itself with polyfill. It sounded much better afterwards, but was still a little boomy. I then did the same to the port, and not only did the boominess pretty much disappear, the sub sounded nice and deep, low and clean. I'm happy with it now, but I wouldn't recommend this sub without the polyfill treatment.
@@BrandonContracting Yeah, the entire box plus the port all the way to it's opening. I'm still using it in my home theater room for LFE. I have it crossed over at 50Htz, it does the job for now. It's ok for the money. I've heard that the Dayton Audio SUB-1000L is a much better sounding and performing sub with about the same design and dimensions. It's a little more money but I'm going to give it a go one of these days.
Another note... I just got done upgrading my home theater room system with a tube pre-amp combined with a much better DAC. With some tweaking, I think this sub is so far sounding fantastic all the way up to 120Htz! Still dialing things in, but man... I'm impressed so far. In the end it's really all about the gear you use. Product reviews... even mine... can be skewed depending on the gear, the room, etc.
@@akersquarteracre8002 Hey, thanks for your advice here. Does yours still have polyfill? Did you get the "sheet" style poly and glue it to the walls, or the big puffy poly and just put large wads in the case? And how much did you put in / how tight was it stuffed?
@@dtemp132 Yup, used the "puffy" poly (pillow stuffing), not tightly stuffed though, just enough to be lightly packed into all the air spaces inside the box.
Too bad they're missing phase and remote controls. Maybe, get the 12 inch and plug the port with open-cell foam. Also could be better over a hard surface not carpet. Another thing you can try is weighting the top (big side) of the cabinet. Place a large heavy stone, cement, ceramic or marble floor/wall tile that is about 2 inches smaller than the top's measurements, in middle of the top with something thin and soft between them to prevent scratching the cabinet finish.
Please remember that line level is the only option for anyone running vintage amps/receivers. Very cool feature that it's available. Even if you wanna rock a 1975, 15w Sansui , you can give it some rump.
I got the Dayton Audio 1000L which is the same design as this Monoprice. I believe it goes a little deeper than this Monoprice. For a small to medium size room it does the job.
The Dayton only goes down to 32 hertz. The Monoprice goes down 25 hertz and has a 150 watt amp. The 12" version goes down to 20 hertz, and even further with a test frequency. The dayton is way under powered too.
I bought two of the 8’s because I’m going 5.2.2 Atmos. You mentioned that you demoed Thor Ragnarok. I would not demo any of the Disney 4K releases at all. Disney is known for turning down the volume levels on most of their titles, including Star Wars, with the exception of Rogue One. I appreciate this video because it showed me what to do with the floor stands. Had no idea what those were and now using the stands has just saved me even more floor space! 👍🏽
Great review. Good stuff. I have a SVS SB-3000 for my home theater and it's great. This one looks like it would be great for a gaming PC setup. Love the low profile look.
This video helped me so much!!! Thank you!!! You made me decide whether to get this or not. No, I'm not going to tell you what stance I took. 😀 Great video my friend. ✌️
I'm thinking more of the 12in version. I usually crossover at the lowest setting because my floor standing Definitives have woofers built in and I also think it's a waste for big main speakers to only produce mids and highs. Anyway, it would be nice to see what you think about the 12in ones.
Hi, Chief! Love your videos, and you have a great, FM-radio style voice. (You should be DJ'ing Miles Davis and Coltrane at 3 am))) Could you sometime do a video on how to hook up 2 subs if my amp/preamp only has 1 "sub out" connection? thanks!
These are subwoofers designed to take some of the load off your bookshelf speakers and add a bit more low range. A 150 watt subwoofer is never going to shake the house.
Great I just found out about mono price and it would seem I can daisy chain couple these under my futon for my gaming room or put a bunch under my master suite ht setup for more bass…
I appreciate the review. I am looking for a second sub for my current 5.1.2 system. Would you consider using this more as a second sub rather than a primary one ?
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I plan to get a SVS PB1000 pro soon and then something like this Monoprice slim for nearfield placement next to/behind my couch. I just want to "feel" some low bass during movies-nothing too crazy...will this sub work ok for that? even with when the primary sub is a big SVS one? Thanks
Amigo soy de mexico compre ese mismo subwoofer en el comercio informal pero no se conectarlo ni se que nesesito para que funcione me puedes ayudar? gracias
Good question, the majority of my testing was actually with the woofer facing me. So the results I mentioned are based on that setup. I also listened to with carpet and on hardwood floors. The hardwoods sounded the best but the hanging bass notes and limited power were still evident.
Obviously it depends on carpet and underlying padding thickness but in general…. some of the bass will be absorbed but not all of it. Bass wave lengths are long so they need very thick materials to totally absorb.
Wow, its been a long time since I've heard of anybody doing that. The last thing I read many years ago was the difficulty of finding an amp to drive them, since most home amps don't like to deal with 4 ohms. But maybe that issue has been solved in the time since I've been away from audio?
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I picked it up as a second to a Klipsch R112, mounted behind media console and TV Vertically, so you really can't see it. It does the job as well as the Jamo Slim 10 and the Jamo 912, but it definitely goes deeper at 60% volume than either. It smooths out the R112, and does what I want it to do.
@@HomeTheaterHobbyist I just picked up the monoprice 12" slim - It is clearly not as good as the R112, but it does functionally work as a secondary sub, that doesn't take any space at all.
The dedicated LFE was designed to work with movies e.g. explosions, rumbles, etc. It may not always play well with music. I prefer it to say SW out. Although I don't think there's any standardization to that marking.
Did you mounted it on the wall? I have kids in tha house and small space so, I'd like to save space with wall mounted subs, I live in a house with solid walls so I can't use in wall subs
I didn’t wall mount because I don’t want to put extra holes in the wall 😀. You’ll get more volume with additional unit but not more depth. Let me know if you get one or more and how you like them.
@@arongatt yes, I'll find I way yo mount it without letting it rattle, something like rubber washers in between, I'm a drummer and I've learned a lot about isolation and acoustics when i built my drum room
Says the guy who hasn't tried the 12" version. Who gives two shits how it looks.. You're supposed to hide it. That's it's whole design factor. Go smoke a stinky cigar.
@@SamplingPercussion Dressing up a chassis that designed not to be seen would just be a waste of money better spent on internals. Personally, I don't mind showing off my main speaker, but I prefer my SW to be felt, but not seen. I find it a kick when friends and guests just see the two little bookshelf speakers and are dazzled wondering how they could have such a full-range sound.
