Dan Tirels
Abstract Seascape Monoprinting from collected beach debris.
Triptych composition on 200gsm paper
Thanks for all your comments and feedback for this video, it's encouraging to know that so many have enjoyed the process. I'm always disappointed by the amount of rubbish seen on the beach while out walking my dog, so to make use of it this way is of some benefit.
I will post another demo soon using the rest of the rubbish I collected that day. Maybe it will become a whole series of new demo videos "Britain's Rubbish" I hope it encourages others to make use of waste materials.
I just want to point out you should really wear gloves whenever collecting rubbish and if on a beach always make sure to check for discarded fish hooks. All the rubbish you see me use was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before I used it.
Look out for my lazy dog Ben who makes a very brief appearance at the beginning of this video.
Details to be updated

Pallet knife (plastic) to transfer the oil paint onto the plastic sheet.
Paper (at least 200gsm)

Thanks for this...and i do love your spirit of experimentation. what kind of plastic paper do you use to put paints on for the transfer? Is wax paper ok to use? And shopping bag plastic?

You have single-handedly changed my opinion about printing Dan. Being basically an impatient soul, I could never be bothered with all the hassle, especially as I don't have access to the equipment that you need to make 'proper' prints i.e. Printing press etc. But thanks to your wonderful little films that's all changed. You're definitely one of life's givers mate. Thank you.

One of the reasons for doing the videos was to show that you don't really need to buy lots of expensive equipment, I hope they help to inspire others to see how you can get creative from a few recycled materials and if it stops waste, it's a bonus. Thanks for watching and your positive feedback.

For relief prints (woodcuts, linocuts, or collagraphs,* for example) you don’t need a press. Just roll ink onto your printing plate, lay paper on top of the ink and use the back of a wooden spoon to rub the paper all over to transfer the ink. The one advantage is you can use the printing plate to make multiple copies, in various colors, or even add color by hand. These mono prints look like fun, and some of them look great, but I tend to prefer something a little more controlled or planned for my own art. My ex, also an artist, bought a wooden item at an antique shop which was meant to place inside of a sock while darning it. One end was roughly shaped like the 3-D front of a foot. He used it instead of a wooden spoon. It fit nicely into the palm of the hand. Or, you might use a clean brayer. They come in various degrees of hardness, so a softer or harder one might work best on a particular printing plate. *Collagraphs use printing plates created from various materials, with a shallow depth, glued to a backing, like a collage. It is best to use items of close to equal depth, smooth or with various textures.

very cool. this is a great way to bring attention to pollution. it'd be cool to do a series and keep the collected materials as part of an exhibit. it's a terrible problem and art is always a great way to communicate about these type of issues.

Very cool. Long ago, when I was doing lithographic printing and etching we sometimes put leftover asphaltum into trays water normally used to presoak printing paper. We'd float it over turpentine. It would form fantastic images. We'd carefully dip printing paper on these patterns. Wonderful and fascinating images resulted. Try it if you haven't already. Old trick, I was doing these 40 years ago!

@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
Thanks, I suppose that is the downside of working with oil paint it can take a while to dry. I find it best to let them dry naturally so leave them in a warm place, depending on the weather they can take up to a week to completely dry. The damp British weather doesn't help !

Since I live on the Pacific Ocean, and also have a (19 year old) Jack Russel, You have really grabbed my attention with this one. My husband collects trash from the beach almost daily, so I always have plenty of fodder out in the trash can for my own beach debris seascape. I can't wait to get started! Thanks for sharing your creative efforts. Question: You've not mentioned priming your paper with gesso. I'm guessing that's just a given with the oil paint.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 года назад
Thank you, I am pleased to ear that you are making good use of those beach debris, I find a walk on the beach very inspiring but it is sad to see the amount of plastic waste on our beaches. The paper I use is a thick smooth card or cartridge paper 250gsm, this can be primed with a primer or a spray of white acrylic will be OK. I do not always prime the paper and it has little or no effect.

Hey Dan! Let me start by saying thank you for sharing your work and techniques. You are a big source of inspiration! Im really into making one-liners of faces. When I saw this technique I immediately wanted to try this out, and combine it with my own style. I already made some nice pieces, however the stickyness of the oil paint feels different from how I see it in your videos. Therefore, Im wondering whether you use (or prefer) a specific type of oil paint and plastic. And whether/how long you wait for the oil paint to dry? I really hope you can help me out! Love your vids and the positivity in the comment section :)
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
You need to try different brands of paint, I use Daler Rowney, or Winsor & Newton, use good quality as the cheaper paints can be a bit oily, always use a very small amount, you can always add more later. Experiment with different types of plastic, you will get some interesting results. Hope this helps. Thanks for your positive response to the video.
